SEPOY MUTINTY
• British East India Company ruled India with soldiers and forts• Hired Indian soldiers called sepoys
• Rumors that the British were supplying bullets greased with cow and pig fat• The cow was sacred to Hindus; the pig was taboo to
muslims• Caused Sepoy to rebel
RESULTS OF THE REBELLION
• Kanpur: Indian rebels slaughtered 200 women• Parliament transferred powers of the East India
Co. to Parliament• Queen Victoria made the people of India her
colonial subjects• “Jewel in the Crown”
BENEFITS OF BRITISH RULE
• Brought order and stability to society• New school system set up• Trained children to serve in the government and army
• Railroads, the telegraph, and a postal service were introduced
COSTS OF BRITISH RULE
• Introduction of British goods (i.e. textiles) put thousands out of work• Taxes were increased by collectors• Farmers were forced to grow cotton instead of
food causing famine• Indian people were treated unfairly
