William Shakespeare• William Shakespeare ( 26 April 1564

– 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.

• Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon".

• His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, several long poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Among the most famous of his plays are the tragedies of “Romeo and Juliet”, “Hamlet”, “Othello”, “King Lear”, “Macbeth”; the comedies of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “The Twelfth Night”; and historical plays “Richard III” and “Henry V”.

• He also worked as an actor at the GlobeTheatre in London.

Robert Burns• Robert Burns (25 January 1759 –

21 July 1796) (also known as Rabbie Burns, Scotland's favourite son, as simply The Bard) was a poet and a lyricist. He is the best-known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in standard English.

Walter Scott• Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet

(1771 –1832) was a Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time.

• In some ways Scott was the first English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of The Lake.

Charles Dickens• Charles Dickens, 1812—1870- an English novelist.

His many famous books describe hard life of the poor and children. They include “Oliver Twist”, “David Copperfield, “A Tale of two cities”.

Jane Austen• Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July

1817) was an English novelist whose realism and irony have earned her a place as one of the most widely read and best-loved writers in English literature. From 1811 until 1815 she wrote Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), she achieved success as a published writer.

George Eliot• Mary Ann (Marian) Evans (22 November 1819

– 22 December 1880), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist. She was one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her novels, largely set in provincial England, are well known for their realism and psychological perspicacity.

• She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure that her works were taken seriously

Sisters Brontë• Charlotte Brontë ( 1816 – 1855)

was a British novelist, the eldest of the three famous Brontë sisters whose novels have become standards of English literature. Charlotte Brontë, who used the pen name Currer Bell, is best known for Jane Eyre, one of the most famous of English novels.

• Emily Jane Brontë (1818 – 1848) was a British novelist and poet, now best remembered for her only novel Wuthering Heights, a classic of English literature. Emily was the second eldest of the three surviving Brontë sisters. She published under the masculine pen name Ellis Bell.

• Anne Brontë (1820 – 1849) was a British novelist and poet, the youngest member of the Brontë literary family

Robert Louis Stevenson• Robert Louis Stevenson (13 ноября 1850

• Christie has been called — by the Guinness Book of World Records, among others — the best-selling writer of books of all time and the best-selling writer of any kind, along with William Shakespeare. Only the Bible is known to have outsold her collected sales of roughly four billion copies of novels.

"Bram" Stoker Abraham "Bram"

Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) was an Irish writer of novels and short stories, who is best known today for his 1897 horror novel Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known for being the personal assistant of the actor Henry Irving .

These, together with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, form a connected body of tales, poems, fictional histories, invented languages, and literary essays about an imagined world called Arda, and Middle-earth within it.

• Both authors were leading figures in the English faculty at Oxford University and in the informal Oxford literary group known as the "Inklings".
