Eating outFRONT COVER PHOTOS - ALCALÁ DEL JÚCAR

Our cover this month is Alcalá del Júcar near Albacete

Alcalá del Jucar is an incredible place to go see and it’s only 1.5 hours away. It’s best approached via Requena on the A3 Valencia/Madrid motorway and turn left to Albacete and then left at Casas-Ibañez. La Mancha is remarkably flat, but all of a sudden the flat expanse ends and you drop into a spectacularly deep gorge. The village is nestled right in the bottom.

If you want to visit the castle, do so on the way down to the town. After the castle, head down hill for the centre of the village, where the river flows through and park up in the large car park, which is usually free. Now you can go on foot to see the village. It’s easy for wheel chair access all the way through from the car park, including the little park, riv-erside walks and the mini-beach be-hind the large weir and the lovely old bridge in front.

A good restaurant is called “Restau-rante Hostel Rambla” at the beach end of town near the bridge. The res-taurant next to the beach generally cook paellas at lunch time (2 p.m.).

After visiting Alcalá del Júcar, there are two suggested routes back home to this area: -

1. The quick route: Go on to-wards Albacete and return to Valencia on the N430.

2. The scenic route: Go to Cofrentes (The nuclear power Station) and then on the back roads on the north side of the river Júcar to Cortes de Pallas. At the T Junction turn right to Cortes de Pallas or left towards Macastre or Dos Aquas, depending where you live.

We hope that you enjoy this spectacular place as much as we do. We’ve been 3 times!

-----------------------------

blo a pie.

out & about Chat - El Rincón de Ademuz

THE RIVER TURIA CONTINUEDEl Rincón de Ademuz (El Rincón means The Corner)

We continue our exploration of the River Turia and go to the far end at Ademuz. Ade-muz is part of Valencia communidad, but is not joined on to it! In fact the journey

starts at the River Ebrón, which runs into the River Turia.

If you take a look at the map, the best way to get to this area is along the CV35, although it is a smaller road than for instance the N330 from Utiel to Ademuz. We would recom-

mend that you travel to Ademuz on the CV35, as it’s so pretty and then get back home quickly on the main N330 road. By going up the CV35, you can see what’s in store for you in future months.

You should aim for a village called Castielfabib, on the banks of the River Ebrón.The steep streets of this town climb the slopes of Fabio Mountain which is 3,113 feet above

sea level and topped by the ruins of a Roman fort on the site of an older Moorish strong-hold. Next to it is the fortified Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, which was built in the 13th century and reformed in the 19th century.

Take a look at the ruins of the Convento de Agustinos de San Guillermo, a convent

dedicated to the Duke of Aquitania. Between Castielfabib and Ademuz, the River Ebrón flows into the Turia just past Los Santos.

In Los Santos, a village that is actually part of Castielfabib, a look at the Iglesia de San

Marco. It’s an old church, and the ruins of the old barns, wine cellars and farms.

On the way to Ademuz, you will travel along the banks of the River Turia . Upriver, the town of Torrebaja is located, which has a beautiful church, the Iglesia de Santa

Marina and two hermitages.

Go explore the valley above Castielfabib, or up to Teruel via Mas de Jacinto and the tranquillity of the high tower of Torrealta, or go back and explore Ademuz itself. Or,

if time permits take in all these places.

Regarding wheelchair access: This will only be possible in the towns themselves and not the higher slopes or walks that may be found here.

Unfortunately we could fill BRITCHAT with all there is to see in this area, but we hope that this gives you a taster. You can always obtain more information from the tourist

board or tourist shops in the area.

Suggested places to see whilst you are in the area: Ademuz, Castielfabib , Mas de Jacin-to, Casas Bajas, Casas Altas, Negrón, Vallanca, Arroyo Cerezo, Torrealta and Val de

Valencia City - Going Out Canovas Plaza

Valencia, as we all know, is a big city. It’s got lots on, from museums and exhibitions, to tourist attractions and beaches. But what if you just fancy a day or night out in Valencia, doing a bit of people watching whilst enjoying a nice, cool beer or 10?

Well, fortunately for you, dear readers, I’ve taken it upon myself, solely for the pur-pose of research for Guide2Valencia of course, to visit the city and report back to you.

There are loads of great areas in the city to visit just for a few drinks, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune either – depending on what you want. This is one thing I love about Valencia, you can find a great wee bar selling beers for €1, nestled right beside a posh place selling at €5+. Hmm, 5 for the price of 1? Sounds good to me!!

This particular article is on the Canovas area, which is found at the riverbed end of Gran Via Marquis del Turia (get you googlemap out for that). The nearest Metro Sta-tion to Canovas is at Alameda, no more than half a km away. You cant really miss Gran Via – it’s a big, wide street, with a park walk right in the middle. Once you’re there, Canovas Plaza is as easy as pie, it’s the first plaza you come to!

Calle Salamanca, running off Canovas, and Calle Conde de Altea, which runs parallel to Gran Via, are 2 other great streets to start your quest. Tons of bars and eateries within a 5 minute walk of each other!

Bit of a side note here, before we go on; If you’re going to drive into the city, remem-ber that it is always packed unless you go down in siesta time. I would recommend getting the train and a taxi home (if it’s too late for the train back home). OR, you could drive to somewhere like El Palme Station, where there is free parking, get the tube 5 or 6 stops and then your cab back to the car at the end of the night. Just a thought.

(ED Note: There is now a brand new underground car park called Salamanca, with lots of room and wide parking spaces at around 2 euros per hour. The entrance is off Grand Via - last street on the right as you head for the old Turia River bed).

Right, back to Canovas. There are lots of bars around, so to many cafes, and restaurants. I’ll just mention a few, as I think half the fun is discovering them yourself. Just in Canovas Plaza you will find St. Patrick’s Irish Pub. Yes, yawn, I hear someone saying out there near the back, but this is the best place to watch any sporting events in the city. It’s big, it’s loud, it’s packed, it’s great. As is the wont of every Irish Bar around the world, the drink is pricey, but the craic is 90 (if that means nothing, ask an Irish friend!). Especially great for the rugby inter-nationals, you really do get punters from all around the world. On our last 2 visits, we ended up with a New Zealander, 2 Italians, a Welshman and ...

Page 9: BRITCHAT September 2009

2 Swedes. Great fun. They don’t serve food in St Pats, although they’ll happily take an order for the local pizzeria who will deliver to the bar. If you fancy something a bit more local-y/ish, head down Salamanca, where you’ll find the ‘Euro Bars’ – Simply put, dirt cheap, hence the name. There are 2 beside one another, and the 3rd is just across the street. My favourite of the 3 is Beer (great name). I find it really friendly, great fun and like a real pub should be. They do weekly specials on a particular draught, and make mega home made

jugs of Agua de Valencia. We bumped into a group of Brit’s once a few years back, and took them here to see a real Valencia bar, and they all loved it. Next door is pretty similar, whilst the 3rd bar, across the street (Urbano) is more a disco bar, so maybe thats where you want to go with your dancing feet on!

Further down Salamanca, you’ll come across the Portland Ale House, apparently the first American bar in Valencia. I know it’s pretty new, I think it cropped up about 2 years ago. Specializes in cocktails and has a nice, traditional look to it.

There used to be a rather cool big bar on the main Gran Via, not too far from St. Pats, but I couldn’t find it this time, maybe its gone…..anyway, if it’s there it’s really groovy. It’s like you are in an opera house. I loved it, although it was a tad expensive.

If you like your English Bars, you could pop into the Robin Hood. Nice size, not too busy, on Calle Conde de Altea.

These really are just ideas, or maybe somewhere for you to start. There are so many places here, really, the best thing to do is come down and do the walk. It’s an incred-ibly fun day (or night) out, and really doesn’t have to cost that much either.

Just don’t forget that for every cheap bar, there’s another one with scary prices! Hap-pened to us when we first headed down this direction, there was a bar beside the Euro Bars (I think it’s now a club) but where Beer’s beer was €1, the bottles in here were €5!! And we’d had 2 each!!! Make sure you check the prices if you’re unsure!

If you plan to hit a restaurant as well, or instead of the bars, there are also a huge range to choose from, both for menu’s of the day and nice evening meals. Don’t forget though, that for night time, you’ll be pushed to find any of the big restaurants open before 9pm. There are Spanish, Italian, Chinese/Asian, a Greek, a Mexican etc all within easy reach of Canovas.

A further note on AWADue to all the extra work with the designer leav-ing and taking all our artwork, I forgot that I had

taken a photo and did not include it in the last edition. So, here it is! It features: José Ignacio Ochoa García, the Di-rector of Marketing and Sales for AWA Group along with Jacqueline Regina Christina the lo-cal Sales Manager.

There are now 40 towns in Cantabria conected with the AWA service

A reader has asked Britchat about her own situa-tion, being based in the termino of Torrent. Our advice is to contact Jacqueline at the Montserrat office and her details are as below.

Spanish Supermarkets charge the earth whilst farmers get less than it costs to produce. The Valencia Life Network reported today that the Farmers Association COAG has come out with some shocking figures that reveal the perilous finan-cial situation of their members, and have accused the leading distribution chains - headed by the Valencian Supermarket chain Mercadona, but also such chains as Lidl, Carrefour, Eroski and El Corte Ingles of failing to pass on profits.

An example of a kilo of potatoes was cited that cost 15 centimes to produce, but the farmers only received six centimos, whilst the sale price in supermarkets was 90 centimos, or 1,500% more than the original price.

The same policy applies to milk that costs between 31 and 34 centimos to produce, but the farmers are paid 27 centimos, whilst the sale price in the stores is 85 centimos.

European Health Insurance Card ChangesThere have recently been changes to European Regulations regarding the European Health Insur-ance Card. This does not affect anyone’s health-care while they are here in Spain. It only affects

Valencia Hotels saw occupancy climb to 80% during the F1The Tourist Office reports that the European Formula 1 Grand Prix in Valencia led to hotel occupancy rates of over 80%.

The Telefónica European Formula 1 Grand Prix, held in Valencia for the second year in a row, has become a ma-jor tourist attraction for the city and Region of Valencia. Over the Grand Prix weekend, a total of 159,997 fans witnessed the most prestigious motor racing competi-tion in the world, leading to hotel occupancy rates of over 80% in the province of Valencia, according to fig-ures compiled by the Valencia Provincial Hotel Union.

According to figures released by the Valencian Regional Department of Tourism, in August, the city of Valencia and the surrounding area had over 18,000 places avail-able in hotels, in addition to a further 8,000 places in the coastal area of Valencia province.

This represents an occupancy rate of close to 21,000 ho-tel places, making this event an major tourist attraction capable of stimulating the ar-rival of visitors to the city of Valencia and the rest of the Region, activating occupancy and, therefore, generating pos-itive effects for the Valencian

tourist sector in the medium and long term.

Spain to introduce stricter non-smoking laws. One thing that many expats and Spanish adults have in common is their love for a cigarette with their cup of coffee or tipple of choice. But all that could be changing in early 2010 Health Minister Trinidad Jiménez said in an interview with Cadena Ser as the government is “assessing the law” which is laced with loopholes and a “certain lack of defi-nition”

Back in January 2006 Spain joined the European non-smoking community by banning smoking in public places, offices, restaurants and pubs. Possi-bly the pub aspect may have escaped the notice of most as each pub and restaurant smaller than 100 square metres was allowed to choose whether to allow smoking or not. Not surprisingly, very few establishments decided to change their habits of a lifetime and so continued to allow smoking as if nothing had changed in the land of law making. Latest figures suggest that over 55,000 people die from smoking-related diseases in Spain every year and that the non-smoking laws have had very little impact on reducing this number.

However, according to the Spanish Press, Spain’s Health Minister now wants to include all pubs and restaurants in a blanket ban and 70% of the Spanish population are in favour of a total ban on smok-ing. El Mundo say that only 40,000 of more than 350,000 establishments are presently smoke-free.

Greece and Turkey recently joined the ranks of Eu-ropean nations that have introduced such a ban and if implemented the effects shall be felt deeper away from the Costa Blanca, Calida, del Sol areas. For those that still smoke, our mild weather allows for terrace smoking and drinking year round, while the colder, wetter winters suffered by Ma-drid, Barcelona and to the north will mean that the effects of such a ban will hit smokers there more than the more popular expat areas of Spain.

DE RETRETES Y LUCES

FROM LOOS TO LIGHTS

There may be a crisis, but thankfully lots of people came for the Formula 1 and Valencia

ShortStay got its fair share of the rental business. But with margins tight, I have been more hands-on in the preparation of the flats for the guests.

CLEANING

Guests arrive and they expect everything to be spic and span. But that is not always easy to

achieve with the amount of dust floating around in Valencia. Hoovering, sweeping and mopping only seem to part of the job. In some flats, where there isn’t a Hoover, we have taken to using a big dust collector on a dry floor that seems to help. The trick that makes the difference is to put elephant loo paper (kitchen paper towels) on the underside so all the dust and hairs are picked up and easily thrown away.

LIMPIEZA

QUICK MOP

We always mop the kitchen and bathrooms. But the other rooms don’t always need a

full mop after every stay. We get the floors looking good using a dust collector with disposable clothes made for the purpose (gamusas) and liberal squirts of ‘multi-uso’ cleaner.

WINDOW CLEANING

While we are talking cleaning, kitchen paper towels do a good job cleaning the windows

and mirrors, when used with a standard window cleaner (limpia cristales). But even better is bog standard newspaper. So hang on to your old copies of the Daily Mail, Levante or whatever.

Enough on cleaning for the moment. If you have any tricks, you would like share with

In the previous issue of this magazine, we wrote about the methods of chemical and biological fight that the Department of Agriculture, fisheries and food recommend in their implementation schedules against this scourge. Last issue we discussed our preferred chemical and biological treatments. This issue we will focus on palm surgery.

The red weevil’s name can seem a little flashy or even funny; and it always awakens a little curios-ity why the name ‘surgery’ has been given to what is a manual technique applied to plants, trees and palm trees.

We now turn to more detail on what the palm surgery goes into.

The first thing to evaluate is the status of the pest in the palm. A palm at the onset of an attack is not the same as a palm that is almost dead, and there are stages in between. But even if you see a great advance of the plague, you may still find the tip of the palm is in a state that can be recovered.

If it is decided to implement this technique, we must consider that it is as a cleansing of this insect that it is located around the tip and this is where we must act. So we start to clean up from top to bottom removing leaves, pellets and debris in the tree cup where we see the red palm weevil insects.

BRITCHAT . 19

THE RED PALM WEEVIL (Part 3)

First of all, this is what a dead tree looks like, as some of our readers may already know.

Secondly, the expert who is writing this ar-ticle will be able to help you! So, on to part three of his write up for Britchat .....

Page 20: BRITCHAT September 2009

HOME & GARDEN CHAT

You always have to work around the tip, but without damaging it; because if we go deep into it, we could kill the palm tree unintentionally. Then we apply a chemical insecticide into all the galleries that we see, in order to reach deeply into the weevil larvae. Depending on the state of the tip, it will evolve or not.

P.E.P.A.

P.E.P.A is a registered charity based largely in the Valencia Province. We do not receive official funding and so have to rely on various fundraising activities in order to finance our work: lunches, coffee morning, car boot sales, fun days and so on. We

have recently opened a charity shop in La Font d’En Carròs, near to Gandia and Oliva in the northern Costa Blanca area. It has been a great success with both the Spanish and English.

P.E.P.A does not have any kennels, instead we do have a small network of foster homes throughout the Valencian and Alicante provinces where our animals are cared for until a permanent home is found. The advantage of this is that the animals are

socialised, we know them well and can give an accurate description of them. Our ability to help people who have found an aban-doned animal depends very much on the circumstances of each situation and whether there are any available foster homes. If the “rescuer” is able to look after the animal until it is re-homed we will advertise it on our website and in the English speaking news-papers. And again according to circumstances and funds available, we will pay for the medical care of the animal. Unfortunately we have not been successful in finding foster homes for cats.

Another service we can offer is to advertise on our website any dogs or cats where for a variety of reasons their owners can no longer keep them.

As far as cats are concerned, P.E.P.A runs a feral cat sterilization programme which covers the north Costa Blanca region and inland (a rough triangle between: Oliva – Ontinyent – Lliria). Our goal is to provide humane control of the size of feral cat

colonies. To implement this we provide trapping equipment purchased by our organization and pay for the sterilization of feral cats, asking only a small donation in return.

P.E.P.A. operates a helpline 7 days a week, currently between the hours of 10am – 5pm, where advice and help can be sought on a range of queries from finding a day old puppy in the basura bins to regulations on taking a pet back to the UK.

Please help by volunteering for one or more of these: Fostering an abandoned dog + Spending a few hours each week on our telephone helpline + Holding fundraising events + Becoming a member + Donating goods for our shop and rastros.

The number is 650 304 746. Please visit our website for more information about P.E.P.A. And why not take the oppor-tunity to see some of the smashing animals that are ready and waiting for adoption! www.pepaspain.com

There are 35 offices in total, but the office that we visited serves all the towns and villages with or

The office is in the pedestrian section in the street behind, on the right. There is some street parking and a large underground car park nearby.

We are now following up the complaint with our Tom Tom described in the hobby article in previous issues. After MediaMkt ignored our request to take it back, we found out that you need to ask for “Una Hoja de Reclamacion”. This means that you want your money back. We should have been sent to a different counter at mediaMkt in June and were not, which wasted a month, as instead, they repaired it and threw away the 76 pages of complaints and techni-cal information about the Tom Tom that had no maps. So, I went to a different counter and asked for their OMIC 4 part NCR form, which I completed, having already prepared a short summary, copy factura and copy repair ticket, for them to staple on to their copy.

We then went in search of the OMIC office in Valencia.

It turned out a wasted trip, as it was closed. It closes at 1 p.m. in summer. So, on visit-

ing a second time we were told that this office was ONLY for the CITY of Valencia. We were given the correct address, but would have to go a third day, as it was nearly 1 p.m.!

A week later we found the correct office and I must say the lady was incredibly helpful

and professional. I had prepared another sum-mary for them and she understood perfectly what had happened and also realised that I had spent a lot on time and fuel visiting MediaMkt twice and themselves three times. They have 1,000 comlaints a month to deal with and it seems that Mediamkt may feature in a lot of these. I got the impression that Mediamkt will not settle anything and always wait until the complaint goes to OMIC, hence their refusal to let me see a Manager to try and sort it out myself. In future it will be a trip to El Corte Inglés for any equipment, as they have the op-posite policy.

MOTOGP ROUND 10 DONINGTON PARK, ENGLAND

MOTO GP VUELTA 8 10 - DONINGTON PARK, INGLATERRA

This was the last Motogp at Donington Park - it moves to Silverston next year to make way for

F1, but it didn’t go out with a whimper. As usual the good old English weather played it’s part with what is best described as a mildly moist atmosphere. Duccati sent its riders, Nicky Hayden and a very poor-ly Casey Stoner out on wets. It was a gamble that failed miserably, seeing both men lapped!

Early leader Jorge Lorenzo took an early bath in the gravel, giving Valentino Rossi the lead. That lasted for a few more laps, until

Rossi also fell. Unable to remount, the champion would eventually finish 5th. The mistake handed fellow Italian Andrea Dovisioso his first Motogp win. The ever-smiling Colin Edwards took 2nd, while Frenchman Randy de Puniet stood on the 3rd step of the podium.

Two tall trees, a Birch and a Beech, are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the Birch, ‘Is that a son of a Beech or a son of a Birch?’ The Birch says he cannot tell, but just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling.

The birch says, ‘Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a Beech or a son of a Birch?’

The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree and replies, ‘It is neither a son of a Beech nor a son of a Birch. It is, however, the best piece of Ash I have ever poked my pecker into.

Now wipe that smile off your face. And pass it on...

Don Quixote Competition / Concurso Find / Busca El Don Quixote!

Since Mrs. Berty was tragically abducted, we thought that it would be rather more appropriate if we had a Spanish theme, so, enter Don Quixote and his horse Rocinante! All correct entries will be placed in a bag and the winner picked by someone draw-ing out one of the names. As usual there will be a small prize for the winner. (We will feature a bit of the history next month).

I was in the pub yesterday when I sud-denly realized I desperately needed to break wind. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my f**ts with the beat.

After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my pint and no-ticed that everbody was staring at me.

Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.
