THE CULTURE CULT,AND THE R&B KICK

ANYMANAGER who has his head screwed on properly

knows that to get his star a wider appeal, it's as wellto give him a bit of culture. Hence Gerry Marsden saying "Idig Bach" and Cliff saying "I can't wait to grow old to dosome character -acting," etc., etc. Now the latest trend istowards the R and B field, started here by the Beatles. Butwhen everybody, Billy Fury, the Paramounts, Billy J. Kramer,Bern Elliott and the rest come in on the R and B kick, Ibegin to wonder. It isn't R and B-it's just a title to pleasethe conformist, non -conforming mods. For goodness sake, let's have pop music called what it really is. R and B canreally only come from the coloured "greats".-John Mullaly,Boyne House, Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Glos.

BEST TEDDYel OLIN WARD'S letter concern-

ing Holly's and Presley's ver-sions of "Ready Teddy" has

moved me out of my usual lethargyand prompted this letter. TheBEST version, by far, of this num-ber is the original Little Richardversion which is still available asa single, backed with "Rip itup." I have the song by Elvis,Holly, Gene Vincent and CarlPerkins but none compare withMr. Pennman's dynamic treat-ment. How about London Recordsre -plugging Richard's version, andhis other old numbers. Pye havedone it to Cnuck Berry - andRichard is as popular as Berry.Incidentally, I'm compiling a listof all Richard's numbers that havebeen recorded by other enter-tainers. Can any Record Mirrorreaders help? - Bob Bell, 1Grange Road, St. Cross, Win-chester, Rants.

HOLLY FILMWE'VE heard a lot of news

about the lack of success infinding any film of Buddy

Holly. Surely Jack Payne's BBCprogramme "Off The Record" hada tele-recording made of it-andsurely ITV record every "Palla-dium" show? There has alreadybeen a programme consisting ofold Palladium show excerpts, sowhy isn't there one of Buddy's ap-pearance? - William D. Glover,31 Hawkin's Rau, Datchworth, near Knebworth, Herts.

FATS & RAYIWAS interested to read Norman

Jopling's ideas on the R and Bcrown related to Fats Domino

and Ray Charles. I agree with himabout Fats, but not over Ray"disillusioning his fans". After hisswitch from Atlantic to ABC -Para-mount, Ray turned out many greatR and B discs like "Sticks andstones", "Unchain my heart" and"Hide 'nor hair", which hit inthe States but didn't mean thingin Britain. After colossal successwith country material, he revertedto blues with "Don't set me free"and "You are my sunshine" butboth flopped. More recently thefailure of "Busted" only em-phasises that, despite acceptingChuck Berry at last, British R andB fans have yet to accept properlythe greatest of them all. - JeffLorin 3 Enderby Gardens, RedHill, Arnold, Nottingham.

GERRY - His admis-sion of a love ofclassical music bringsa pointed letter froma reader. RM pis.

'HEART' BATTLEWAS amazed when I heardI

everyone rave over CiliaBlack's version of "Anyone

who had a heart". To me, sherepresents the typical Englishfemme singer; unexpressive, un-original and unable to really "feel"a lyric. I suppose the real truthlies in the fact that not manyPeople have heard Dionne War-wick's recordings to any large ex-tent. But the song needs someoneof her great talents to transcribethe lyric into a really wonderfuland breathtaking performance. -Christopher B. Hawley, Toscana,4 Tranfie4d. What the Beatles haven'

    done so far...MEN ONLY I

VTHEN the Beatles return toBritain, how about someshows for male audiences

only. This would mean that theboys would be heard without thescreams and so properly appre-ciated by their many male fans -D. Collins, 48 Dunstall "Road,Halesowen, Birmingham.

BE FAIR'LIVERY time I turn on th2r.4, radio, all is centred round

the Liverpool groups. Or, ofcourse its numerous imitators. Ienjoy good POP of all kinds but itis possibe to have too much of agood thing. Let Cliff, Helen, Marty, the Shadows and the others havemore of a look in. - Philip Shaw.59 The University, Keefe, Staffs.

I SHOULD think that everyone.the Beatles included, is won-dering what our top pop grout)

can do next. Well, I have actuallythought of something. Elvis, Cliff,Frank Ifield and lots of othershave done it, but not theBeatles . . yet! I refer togetting a double -sided hit! - MissBarbara A. Reid, 9 Church Road,Osterley, Isleworth, Middlesex.

    BILLY WRITES FROM SWEriliN

BILLY J. KRAMER (RM pie. Dezo Hoffman)

HI, THERE! Well Sweden-11-2- is every bit as excitingand fascinating as I hoped itwould be. We've had a fabtime trudging through thesnow and all that - and I'dlike to take this opportunityof telling you all about thetrip with the Dakotas.

We left London in a Cara-velle and arrived to find alarge number of fans andPress people waiting for us.Lots of girls had presents ofbunches of flowers for us. . . a local custom.

Next day, we drove to theoutskirts of Stockholm torecord an interview withKlaus Burling, the top dee-jay. And we experienced ourfirst sauna - known as"Bastu" over here.

Red HotWe all sat in a small

wooden room, around a red-hot stone in temperatures ofabout 90 degrees. After awhile, you rush out into anice-cold shower. Repeat thisthree times. As it was ourfirst attempt, they didn'tbeat us with the bundles ofwet birch leaves, which ispart of a proper sauna. Butlater we got the full treat-ment. Then you get a mas-sage and sun -ray treatment.Fab!

Ray Jones, of the Dakotas, was using up miles of filmin his new cine-camera.Specially at our first show. This was at Stockholm'sChina Theatre-but the coldhad affected our guitars andit took a while to warm up.Loads of fans and police. Butwe got away to the hotel torest up for the second show, which was at 11.30 p.m.

The audience knew mostof our records, even from theL.P. and "Dance With Me"was one of the favourites. We had a bit of a celebrationthat evening.

Off to Sundsvall for twoconcerts. Thick ice andsnow-with 15-20 foot driftsat the road side. Beautifulscenery on the drive, whichtook over six hours. Theshow was great. We wereknocked out by an 18 -year -old Dutch girl, Susie and theNorthmen, who were also onthe bill. And a British group.Ken Levy and the Phantoms, from Cambridge - they'dbeen in Sweden for twelvemonths.

Next day, the boys drove500 miles to Gothenberg -but I flew across with myroad manager, Roger Stinton.I sported a new Swedishfolk hat. That was fab, too.

    SpotnicksGothenberg is the home of

the Spotnicks and regardedas the Liverpool of Sweden.I had the pleasure of givinga silver disc to the Streaplersfor their chart -topper here"Diggity Doggetty." They'reprobably THE group herenow. The show was a sell-outand we had ourselves ariot . . .

First show ended in chaoswith a free-for-all fight onstage between hordes ofscreaming fans and Pressphotographers - the pictureboys nearly outnumbered thefans. Later, when it calmeddown, we went out as theguests of Gert Lengstrand, the vocalist with the Streap-lers.

    ShoppingWe had a morning shop-

ping then went to Boras tomore mad scenes. This timethe fans also invaded thehotel and the police werecalled before we even gotinto our rooms. Later, we hada night out with TelstarProductions who are pro-moting the tour.

Up next day at the crackof dawn for an early con-cert in Kristinenhamn, fol-lowed by a second show inKarlskoga. In W e s to r nSweden, the audiences asequally appreciative as inthe south but not quite sodemonstrative, thank good-ness. This was a peacefulday.

More concerts next day inLinkoping and Norrkopingin the central areas. And wehad another long driveahead to the south for showsat Halsinborg and Malmo.

This was a riotous sectionof the trip. Particularly aswe were preceded on the billby Jerry Williams and theVaqueros, a really wild rockcombo. In both Halsinborgand Malmo, the stage wasstormed during the firstnumber-and the rioting con-tinued until the end of theshow.

    PartyAfterwards, we went back

to our hotel, one of thenewest in Sweden, and laidon a party to celebrate RogerStinton's birthday.

From there, we went backto Stockholm and on toHelsinki in Finland for con-certs and television.

I thought I'd hate all thecold and the snow. But Iwound up enjoying it-andfeeling really fit and on topof the world. Yep, Scandin-avia is fab! Just fab!

    Frankie-'Why I didn'tFRANKIE AVALON - one

of the top names ininternational show business.A hit record -maker, anaccomplished cabaret star, atrumpeter, and a film star.

Yet this dark and hand-some (but not particularlytall) young American hasnever sold any vast quantityof records in Britain. Why?

    HECTIC

During a day -long visit to LondonI managed to break into his hecticschedule for an hour to ask hisopinion on his relative failure withthe British disc -buying public. Abrisk, brash, confident, quick -thinker, Frankie gave me thisanswer:

"Well, maybe I coincided withthe sudden rise to fame of a wholebunch of talented British guys, likeCliff, who got all the attention. But in particular I'd say it wasbecause most of my hits werecovered here by Anthony Newley-NUMBERS SUCH AS 'Why' and'Venus.' "

    COMMENT

Choking back the comment thatit was a pity Frankie didn'tretaliate by making an Americancover version of "What kind of foolam I," I asked if he was familiarwith our local disc stars.

"I know Cliff personally, touredwith him in the States. And,naturally, I've heard Newleythough not met him. But I'm hop-ing to line up some kind of tourfor the future. This is my firstvisit and I like what I see andwould love a chance to see therest of England."

Frankie had just concluded amonth -long tour of the Continent, working mostly in cabaret. Thanksto the existence in America ofsuch "sophisticated" night hauntsas the Copa in New York and theSands in Las Vegas he has been

    make it here'

    FRANKIE AVALON

able to spend a good deal or hisworking hours in cabaret and oneof the factors that will hold backhis genera! acceptance in thiscountry is the absence of a night-club circuit that can afford enter-tainers of his calibre. For Frankiealthough only 24, has learned howto appeal to family audiences aswell as to the youngsters who domost of the disc buying. It mustn'tbe thought, though, that Frankiehas grown away from teenagemusic. Quite the opposite:

"A few years ago I would neverbother to tune into a rock'n'rollradio station back home. Now Ican listen to all kinds of soundsand get pleasure from them. It'sgood to be able to appreciate allkinds cf music. The trouble withso many teenagers today is thatthey don't know much about otherkinds of music. When they get abit older they find out that there'sgood and bad in all styles."

    Fortunately for Frankie he was

born in an area of Philadelphiathat has produced an astonishingnumber of diverse show biz talents(some of whom have become hisfriends). Talking off the cuff, henamed some of the people whowere born in the same few hundredsquare yards. Eddie Fisher, BuddyGreco, Fabian, Mario Lanza,Marian Anderson, Al Martino,Bobby Rydell, Jimmy Darren andChubby Checker - how's that fora mixed bunch?

    INSPIRATION

Perhaps if it hadn't been for theirinspiration Frankie would today bea trumpet player in one of the bigbands. "It was certainly myambition when I was around 11 or12," he said. "But these days Ionly play just enough to keep mylips in shape for a little blowingduring cabaret spots. You know,if I hail kept it up I reckon I wouldhave been one of the best trum-peters. I was really keen. Butthe money is in singing."

And through singing, followed byacting (in such pictures as Panicin the year zero and the forth-coming musical Muscle beach parryin which ne unroauces the MalibuBeat - "a combination of a lotof things") Frankie has madeenough money to enable him totake it easy for the rest of his life.

    ACTING

Not that he intends to. "I liketo space it out. I do some singingfor a while, then take off and restat my Los Angeles home with mywife and four -month -old baby, thendo a spot of acting, then take somemore time off. But I feel I'm juststarting to make my mark inshow business."

THE CRYSTALS ON TOURWHAT a wealth of talent

the Crystals have, andhow the four young Ameri-can gals displayed it to theirfirst -ever British audiencesat the Coventry Theatrelast Sunday night!

Maybe they were drownedsomewhat by the accompani-ment, and maybe they didn'tstop the show as a result, but these are minor detailswhich will be swiftly recti-fied as the tour gets into itsstride and plays theatreswhich are more acousticallysuited.

Visually, of course, theCrystals are a dream.Whether clad in black laceor white satin (dependingupon which performance youattended) their hand -clap-ping, hip -shaking workout

had even the girls in theaudience screaming through-out much of their show.

Having kicked off with"Twisting the night away" onwhich they sounded nothinglike the Crystals, theydropped the pace somewhatfor a very faithful render-ing of "Then he kissed me."This drew instantaneous ap-plause, as did "I wonder"which, the audiences seemedto haite become very wellacquainted with in the spaceof one short week.

Tremendously effective andwell received' was their ren-dition of "He's a rebel" which

came off best soundwise;and this was followed by abelting "Da doo ron ron"which, with encores, provedto be the finale.

Backing the Crystals, andapplying themselves heartand soul to the task of sup-plementing the Phil Spectororchestra, were the ManfredMann group.

Top -of -the -bill Joe Brownhad no trouble setting theplace on fire with his ownever -popular brand of musi-cal prowess and comedy, andthe rest of the well-balancedprogramme included JohnnyKidd, Heinz and the Saints.

Congratulations on a great "Lucky Stars"

EDEN KANE TALKS TO DAVID GRIFFITHS ABOUT HIS CHART COMEBACK

    I thought I was a has-been

EDEN KANE, who scored several years ago with "Well I Ask You," "Get Lost," "IDon't Know Why," "Forget Me Not," is now in the charts again with his wistful

    "Boys Cry."

    FOURyears in show

business and two yearswithout a hit. That's therecord of Eden Kane whocame up fast and looked likegoing down slowly - until"Boys cry," his latest Fon-tana record that's steadilyclimbing the charts.

"It's the most difficultthing in the world to comeback and I must admit Iwas beginning to feel likethe Forgotten Man of showbusiness," Eden told me. "Iwas imagining 'Go HomeKane' signs all overthe place!

"A couple of years ago Iwas working every day ofthe week, becoming ashadow I was performing somuch. Then things slackenedoff - no hits, no tours -and in a way I was gladto have some free time, butonly to a certain extent. I'mnot the worrying kind, Idon't know the value ofmoney, but all the same Iwas getting a bit nervous.

    OVERJOYED"You see, my money didn't

come down for a night's en-gagement and this inevitablymeant less offers coming in.I had too many nights off.Now I'm overjoyed thatpeople like my latest discand want to hear me again."

Eden is joining the currentRobert Stigwood tour for aweek early next month andis doing one night stands. If the current record makesit right to the top he will

have plenty of opportunityto make the required per-sonal appearances. Thanksto "Boys cry" the outlookis bright.

I asked Eden how he'dcome by the number.

    NOT KEEN"My recording manager,

Jack Baverstock, went tovisit his friend, songwriterBuddy Kaye. Buddy wastinkling about on the pianoand Jack thought it was acatchy tune - it had adifferent title at the time -and asked Buddy to makea demonstration disc of it.Then Jack played the demoto me and, frankly, I wasn'ttoo keen on it on firsthearing.

"BUT I'd had my own waywith the last three records.I'd been able to do just whatI wanted - and I was par-ticularly proud of "To-morrow night" - but noneof the discs got anywhere.

"This time, then, I toldJack I'd do what HE wanted- obviously I wasn't comingup with the right materialfor myself, so I turned theproblem over to Jack. Afew other people had doubtsabout 'Boys cry' but all ourdoubts were dispelled whenwe got in the recordingstudio and I started runningthrough the song. Les Reedhad done a wonderful ar-rangement and the sessionwent very well."

Now Eden is alreadybeginning to face up to theproblem of what's to follow"Boys cry" and WHEN torelease the disc. "AlthoughI've been in the businessfour years I still don't knowwhat's best to do. I thinkit's impossible to work every-thing out in advance."

Anyway, for the momentyoung Mr. Kane is happilywatching what's happeningwith "Boys cry."

album packed with top pop material.

A few solos each and the re-maining tracks duetted. Referencesto Millicent's TW3 colleagues addsparkle to "How about you?" Wellworth your attention but perhapsnot destined for the charts.

ICAN just hear the argumentsnow between the purists and.the pop R & B fans. Well the

contents are pretty well all R & B

L.P's byJimmy Watsonsongs with a few borderline casesthrown in. Conway's approach isprobably tending towards therock'n' roll field, but then two ofthe R & B heroes, Chuck and Bo,are, and admit to being, rock'n'roll performers. Let's forget aboutdefining the set and say thatas a pop album it is good, verygood. Conway is in good voiceand the right beat is here fortoday's customers.

I wonder; Little boy (LondonHLU 9852).

WITH the added attraction ofthe girls in person, this newone from the Crystals should

do a bomb. It's a heavy -soundingplaintive beater with the girls ontop of vocal form and a greatcomplicated backing. Tune isexcellent and there's a touch ofwistfulness about the whole thing.Could he as big as "Then hekissed me." Someone had a brightidea putting "Little boy" on theflip. its the one that didn't do sowell for the girls in the States.Nevertheless it's a thumpy R & Bstyled item that will please thegirls many fans.TOI' FIFTY TIP

BOBBY VEEShe's sorry; Buddys Song (Liberty

organ bit or two, this one israther a take off of "She

Its well -performed and hisvocal work is on form of course. From the LP "I remember BuddyHolly' comes this one. It's aplaintive Holly type beater that'svery well performed, but themain point is that the lyric is madeup almost entirely of Holly songtitles.TOP FIFTY TIP

THERE'S a heavy beat on thisone, which is aptly describedby the title. Strong bass lead,

while the drums pound awaybehind. The whole thing is rathercompulsive and this could giveJet his first solo hit since "Maintitle theme., Tuneful and dance-able. Penned incidentally by theCarter -Lewis team. Flip is agentler affair with a softer sound, and some delicate sound but noton the bass guitar. Spanishsounding affair with loads ofappeal.TOP FIFTY TIP

MATT MONROI love the Mee things; It's

funny how you know (ParlophoneE 5103).

PERKY string backing on thenewie from Matt, and it's thisone that's entering us for the

European song contest. A TonyHatch composition with a strongmelody line, and of courseimpeccable vocal from Matt him-self. Must be a minor hit atleast. Flip is a Norman Newelland Philip Green composition andmoves at about the same tempoas side one. Quite nice, andalthough neither side is repre-sentative of Matts best work, it'sonly because of the light material.TOP FIFTY TIP

STRANGE gurgling sound openthe newie from the boys, andthen a heavy drum beat

followed by bass, and finally thehigh pitched organ on the fast-moving newie from the team. It'sa tuneful effort with a good tunerunning through it, and asalways that inimitable Tornadossound. Good guitar solo, in fact thewhole affair is well performed andsmooth. Compulsive beat. Flip isa different type of thing, again witha strong beat but different organand instrumental work. OH yes! Russ is right hack inhis old jangly piano style onthis light-hearted yet rather

earthy heater. His piano work issuperb on the old hit while there'sa never -let-up beat hacking behindhim. Good dance beat and the sortof thing that will appeal to alltypes of record buyers. Gets abit intricate but it should dobetter than his last few. flip isnaturally an eastern sounding effortthat reflects a happy mood onceagain.TOP FIFTY TIP

The R & BQuality shows them to be Britain'stop group still in this field, andthe familiarity of the song, andthe Stones name should make thisinto their biggest hit. CURRENTLY climbing theR.M. chart is that

delicious slice of R. & B. en-titled "Louie Louie" by theKingsmen, and although thisgreat disc doesn't stand anearthly chance of equallingits Stateside success overhere it may well be hoveringaround our Top Twenty forsome time to come.

FactsBut let's look at a few

facts and find out more aboutthe five young white ladswho have found the secretof sounding just like acoloured group.

The rough vocal effects be-long to the leader of thegroup, 19 - year - old LynnEaston who in addition ar-ranges the group's songs andplays sax. Two other Kings -men, Gary Abbott (drummer)and Mike Mitchell (guitar)were schoolfriends of Lynn's.The three of them graduatedfrom David Douglas HighSchool which is in Portland,Oregon. The remaining mem-bers, Norm Sundholm(guitar and bass.) and DonGallucci (organ) joined later.

The group, which has noconnection with Bill Haley'sone-time group memberswho also recorded under the

THE KINGSMEN who are currently hitting it big in the charts with "Louie Louie."

    The strangest sound inthe charts

same name and had a hitwith "Weekend," has beentogether for six years now, playing one-nighters, fairsand dances and making theodd television and radio com-mercial appearances.

    ResidentAbout a year ago, they

took over as resident bandat a teenage night spot inPortland, Oregon, called "TheChase." And it was here thattheir first album was cut. Allof the Kingsmen have plentyof experience in their ownfield, ranging from fouryears to ten years,..

In addition to his arrang-ing, vocal and instrumentalabilities, Lynn is also a faircomposer, having written theflip of "Louie Louie" entitled"Haunted Castle."

    UsefulTwo of the group mem-

bers stick by their day -timejobs. And they're pretty use-ful jobs as far as the othersare concerned. For instance, there is Gary, who is a hair-dresser. He can cope withboth styles-for men andwomen-and he's very muchin demand in the dressing -room if one of the boys

needs a quick trim. SaysGary: "The only trouble isthat these customers don'tbother to pay me."

But the "group feeling"also extends to Mike, whohas a full-time job as cloth-ing salesman. He's the onewho advises them on fashionchanges and suggests ideasfor stage garb for the group.Again, he says: "Becausethey're all buddies of mine, they also don't pay for the

expert advice I can givethem!" But he was only kid-ding.

    Follow-upFor British fans, all they're

looking forward to now isthe follow-up single to"Louie Louie"-and the re-lease here of that albumcut at the Portland nitery,"The Chase."

    Should be good stuff!

    CHART CHATTER

NOBODY, least of all the Bachelors, thought that their "Diane"would make the top. But it has. And it just stops Cilia fromreaching the coveted top spot who gains in strength, though

Dionne Warwick's version falls this week. Other big jumps thisweek are from Cliff, Eden Kane, Chuck Berry, Ken Dodd, and ofcourse Dave Clark who comes in strongly with the Road Drillsound on "Bits & Pieces." Dusty leaps in. while Roy Orbisonmakes the lists without much plugging at all. Kathy Kirby didn'tmake it first week of release so everyone will be watching theprogress of "Let Me Go Lover" with some interest.

Freddie also doesn't do as well as might be expected, but JimReeves could have a biggie on his hands with the old "I Love YouBecause" showing first week on release. John Leyton could gohigher with his best for ages, and America's Major Lance lookslike gaining strength with his great "Um, Um, Uin, Um, Urn, Um."

Out of the list this week are such discs as "You'll Never WalkAlone" (in comes the EP!), "Fever" and "Money." Hanging onon the lower bits of the charts are Bobby Vinton, the Dowlands, and the Unit Four Plus Two.

    The SearchersMIKE PENDER was born

on the third of March1942. Born Michael JohnPrendergast - "...but I usethe name Pender for con-venience. I got it from theboxer."

Mike, who plays lead guitarwith the boys is probably thequietest one of the group.Carefully dressed, and well-groomed he looks attractivein a way that contrasts withthe flashy show - businesslooks of most of the beatgroup boys around today.Mike started out with thedistinct advantage of havingan electric guitar bought forhim, although he had beeninterested in music from anearly age. But there were nogroups then to play with soMike just used to strumaround the house, andoccasionally on street corners. It was there that he met upwith fellow - SearcherJohn McNally and togetherthey teamed up, frequentingMike's house where theywould practise.

    ACCORDIAN"I was first inspired by

Buddy Holly and the Shad-ows. Hank B. Marvin is stillone of my favourite guitar-ists, despite what other Liver-pool groups and artistes sayabout the Shadows. I stilllike Buddy Holly, and RoyOrbison of course.

"Apart from lead guitar Ithink I'd like to play theaccordion. I don't know why.

    THIS WEEK...

MIKE PENDERI know it used to be themost popular instrument be-fore the guitar came in. Butwith an accordion you canmake all the music yourself.

"Later on, if the groupbreaks up or when we allbecome too old to sing beatmusic I'd like to travel. Tra-vel all over the world butespecially to Egypt, and themiddle East. That area fascin-ates me. Despite the storiesof the others about the hugeinsects and the mosquitos.. .

    HAPPY"Like Tony I support Ever -

ton. We go whenever we can.In fact I'm pretty keen onall kinds of sport althoughwe seem to get less and lesstime for that sort of thingnowdays. We didn't have aholiday last year, but we'redetermined to get away fromit all somewhere or otherthis year."

Mike Pender is unlike theother Searchers. But then, allfour are totally differentcharacters. All very very dis-similar but all interesting. And although they hav, one

big thing in common-Liver-pool-there are many thingsthey don't have in common.

"We don't pretend that weare one big happy familylike certain groups do. Wehave our arguments and ourbad moments very fre-quently. But that doesn'tmean that we are always onthe point of breaking up. Onthe contrary we don't let anypersonal feelings interferewith our career. Musically weall have slightly differingtastes but basically we allknow and like what we areplaying." They still don'tlike their "Sugar and Spice"disc although it reached No.2.

    RUBBISH!"But one newspaper

said that we were choked itdidn't get to number one! What absolute rubbish! Thatwas a pretty bad bit of flan-nel, in fact we have beengrateful that any of our discshave made the charts at all."

That is typical of MikePender and the group ingeneral. They must be themost unaffected bunch ofblokes to crash the numberone spot twice - and prob-ably many more times tocome.

    And I'm convinced thatthey'll stay that way. . . .
