Bedford is the new man at the helm of the MYBA

The Morinville Youth Basketball Association has a new president. James Bedford, a Morinville resident for the past 12 years, takes over this season from Serge Froment, the man who has been at the helm of the association for years and who helped lead several teams to City and Provincial Championships.

Below is our interview with Bedford on his role and the direction the MYBA will take this year.

MN: How long have you been with MYBA and what positions have you held?

JB: I have been with MYBA for one season, coaching my son’s Mini Boys team last year. Early last spring, Serge contacted me to see whether I’d be interested in heading up a group of parents who would succeed him as he steps away from MYBA, and I jumped at the opportunity to be more involved.

MN: What is the new position and how do you feel about taking the helm from Serge?

JB: My new position is President of the Association, serving on an Executive Committee alongside parents Jennie Rosendahl and Jennifer Roddis. Initially, it was definitely a little bit intimidating to be taking the helm from Serge, knowing how much time and energy he put into running the Association. But I quickly realized that he has left MYBA in excellent shape. He’s also still only a phone call or text away if we need his advice on anything. Also, having Jennie and Jennifer to help me, makes the task seem much less daunting. We’re doing our jobs well if we can avoid having the parents and players realize just how fortunate they were to have Serge running the show ever since MYBA started in 2009. I just can’t say enough great things about him and the job he’s done here.

MN: What can we expect from MYBA this season as compared to previous years?

JB: Initially, our main goal is to keep things running just as smoothly under the new leadership as it was under Serge’s. We don’t want to upset the apple cart. But eventually we will strive to grow the association, hopefully fielding multiple teams per age level, and adding

a Mites level for players under age eight. We will make improvements to our website and streamline the registration and merchandise shopping processes.

MN: What can you say about the growth of basketball over the past few years?

JB: Basketball has been one of the fastest growing sports in Canada over the past several years, and has overtaken hockey in terms of the number of youth participants. Perhaps not quite so much yet here in Morinville as in urban centres, but it is definitely growing in popularity. I think that changing demographics, the low cost to play, the relative safety of the sport, and the recent success of the Toronto Raptors and Canadian players like Steve Nash, Andrew Wiggins, and many others are all big reasons for this surge. As well, the development of youth leagues like the Edmonton Youth Basketball Association, which MYBA competes in, has helped to give more kids an opportunity to play organized basketball, rather than just having school teams to play on like it was when I was

growing up. Nowadays, kids can start playing a lot earlier, and they don’t have to be one of the top 3-4 players in their grade in order to make the team; anyone can play.

MN: What levels of boys and girls ball are you planning to put on the court this season?

JB: This season, we plan to field both boys and girls teams in all four of the different age categories that EYBA offers: Mini, for players born in 2006-2008; Bantam, for players born in 2004-2005; Midget, for players born in 2002-2003; and Juvenile, for players born in 1999-2001. If we have sufficient numbers to run a Mites program for players born in 2009 and later, then we will add that as well.

be participating in the Morinville Active Living Fair at the Community Cultural Centre on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 8; parents can stop by to meet us, get more information, and register their players. We do not hold tryouts — all youth of any skill level who want to play will get to, provided that we have enough participants to run a team, or to field a second team. We will get started with the first practices around the end of September, so please register as soon as possible.

MN: Do you have all the coaches lined up for this season and is there anything you might like to mention about them?

JB: We have all of our coaches lined up for this season for the number of teams that we currently anticipate. They really are the lifeblood of our Association. They all volunteer their time and talents, and not all of them even have children on their teams; they’re just very passionate about the sport of basketball and helping youth realize their maximum potential. Most, if not all, of our coaches have taken various levels of training in the National Coaching Certification Program that Canada Basketball has recently implemented.

MN: Anything else you’d want people to know about yourself, the teams, etc.?

JB: I grew up playing basketball in Wetaskiwin, and moved to Morinville with my wife, Tara, in 2004 when I started working for the local general contracting firm, Flynn Bros. We have two sons, Liam and Zeke, who are both going to be playing on the Mini Boys team this season, and a daughter, Joelle, who is still a couple of years shy of being a Mini Girl. I still play basketball a few times each week in Edmonton, and I’m working with the Town to hopefully get a weekly adult basketball night up and running, starting this fall.

Coach Serge Froment saw a group of girls graduate this year that he began coaching when they were in the second grade. The local chiropractor and basketball coach has been with the Morinville Youth Basketball Association (MYBA) since its inception.

Froment’s love of basketball came at an early age when he would play with his younger brother and his friends, shooting baskets in his driveway for hours on end.

Though the sport was not as well organized in Froment’s day as it is today, he did play a significant role ensuring resources and training were there when his daughters began school and were looking for something sports related. Starting with 13 girls and two teams in the second year, the MYBA now fields seven and eight teams each year.

The MYBA basketballers were formerly called The Roadrunners but changed their name to the Orijen Sabretooths a couple of years ago when Champion Petfoods became the teams’ sponsor.

Froment saw the Association through the change in name and the growth in size and skill that has made the Sabretooths City and Provincial champions in successive years.

But with his daughters now playing for teams outside Morinville, Froment is hanging

up his MYBA whistle and passing the torch to parent James Bedford. Froment is confident in his successor and sees great things on and off the court for the teams.

“Over the last couple of years, as I realized my daughters were going to be playing basketball in other locations, I knew it would

be important to find a real good active parent,” Froment said, noting that Bedford rose to the task and the challenge. “Over and over, James kept really hitting home runs. When he showed up [to practice], he’d really encourage his team to come and help out. Whether it was the presentation of the cheque from Champion Petfood, or

[getting basketball players out for] the parade, James really went out of his way to do things right.”

Froment began talking to Bedford about taking over the helm, and Froment is encouraged by Bedford’s interest in taking coaching courses.

“He’s really interested in becoming a better coach, and that’s important because you not only have to have a passion for the kids; you have to have a passion for the sport if you are going to be leading eight to ten teams every year,” Froment said.

The former MYBA President said he would be available to assist over the transition year, but is confident the calls will be few and far between.

Coming home the other day, I had to brake for a young man riding along the road on his bicycle, weaving around oblivious to anything except the text message he appeared to be sending on his cell phone. I hit the brakes a second time as he weaved out in front of me once again on the next street, still trying to navigate the cell phone with one hand.

A half block later I hit the brakes for one of his friends who, like his buddy, apparently had no peripheral vision or the common sense to use it. Neither of the young men was wearing a helmet.

Now granted, I didn’t wear down any brake pad or leave any skid marks on the pavement stopping for these two, but if I hadn’t been doing my part to be both their eyes and ears, both of them might have been dropping some skid marks of their own — in their shorts.

Children are back to school throughout Sturgeon County this week. Because drivers seem to forget the rules over the summer, it is necessary for the RCMP and the Government of Alberta to issue press releases so that we in the news business can be reminded to remind our readers to slow down in school zones and to stop for school buses. These little things should make as much common sense as not texting while you are riding a bicycle across the road.

But those of us old enough to drive are also old enough to take the burden of responsibility in maintaining school zone safety.

And while the responsibility falls upon us as drivers to slow down and keep our eyes open, our responsibility as parents is to make sure our children do not leave the house with their bikes unless there is a bike helmet on their head. The onus is on us to make sure that our children are reminded of those safety rules once again, and again, and again.

School zone safety is a two-way street, one in which the responsibility for our driving habits and ensuring our children’s build the common sense to get safely to and from school rests entirely with us.

Letter: Resident concerned over old power pole

This is a warning for anyone who walks along the railroad tracks with their dogs to get to Heritage Lake, Please be careful of the falling telegraph poles and cables hidden in the long grass.

On June 3rd, a wind storm broke a telegraph pole along the railroad tracks. I immediately phoned the Town of Morinville Public Works office to report it. They were not aware of the lines and said it was not their property, so referred me to Fortis or CN Rail. I found the numbers, made the calls, and found out that these are obsolete telegraph lines, owned by CN Rail, that have not served a purpose in many years. That same day, a Town employee (I believe) was mowing along the tracks and appeared to get caught up in the wire. He neatly wrapped up the wire and set it off to the side. I had hoped that all my phone calls would prove effective, but it appears not. One of the leaning poles is now slowly falling apart, and I am sure that the many dogs that run up and down my fence have been tripped up more than once. I contacted the Town of Morinville administration again mid-August to ask if they had heard anything about the broken and fallen poles being removed, along with the wires. I was again told that I would need to make the calls to CN for answers, as this is not their property. I spoke to three different people at CN and was told they are on looking into it. I have done my due diligence, I have made the calls, but the danger remains, so watch your step.

Six running in Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools Ward 1 race

After the 24-hour waiting period following the Aug. 22 nomination close, Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools have six candidates running for the Ward 1 position left vacant by retiring long-time Trustee Dave Caron.

Greater St. Albert Catholic School District posted the official list of candidates for the Sept. 19 By-Election. The candidates are Joe Becigneul, Brigitte Cecelia, Alyssa Frew, Moire Hogg, Greg Schell,

and Kenton Zerbin.“We are blessed to see a great deal of interest from the broader

community in running for trustee and that voters will be able to elect a voice for Catholic education in St. Albert and across the District,” said commented Deb Schlag, the District’s secretary-treasurer in a release Wednesday. “With six candidates running in the By-Election, we hope it encourages Catholic residents to get out and vote,”

New development planned for 100 Street? A recently-erected sign indicates land on the east side of 100 Street, south of the seed cleaning plant is being proposed for mixed commercial and industrial usage. According to the sign, the proposed Coal Creek Area Structure Plan calls for roughly half business industrial and half commercial with some municipal reserve and storm ponds. The Coal Creek Area Structure Plan—referred to on the sign—was not on the Aug. 30 Council agenda made public by the Town Thursday afternoon. We will continue to follow the progress of this development.

After four years of waiting, the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation (JMMF) has finally struck a housing committee, getting itself closer to realizing the dream of establishing a safe house in the Morinville area.

The formation of the Committee, which met for the first time this past May, is step one of many.

“Our intent was to [officially] get started in March 2016, but with several other items coming our way, it turned out the first meeting was held on May 17, in St. Albert at a Tim Hortons,” said Kris Porlier, the Director of Public Relations with JMMF in an interview. Porlier says the Committee is made up of seven sitting members; however, he says there is also “great participation” from representatives of the Town of Morinville, Sturgeon County, and businesses in the area.

Additionally, two individuals Porlier mentions in particular—Rick Lamontagne, from Richlyn Custom Homes, and Andre Bourgeois, an Architect with AB Design Inc.—have been key members in developing the committee’s plans; “both have done great things for the Foundation with bringing their ideas and motivation to the group.”

“I would say that Greg Hofmann from the Town of Morinville has [also] been great in helping to advise us when it comes to the municipality and bylaws. We have also had some great Town and County Councillors come to advise us, as well as members of the Morinville RCMP detachment.”

The non-profit group has wanted to see a women’s shelter or safe house

established in the Morinville area since JMMF first formed back in 2012. In the past, the organization has said other pieces of the puzzle had to come together first before they could focus on their ultimate goal of bringing the safe house project to light.

Porlier explains, however, the idea of a shelter was always looming in the background.

“…[People] wanted to know what plans we had for a shelter. They were asking a lot of really great and applicable questions that we couldn’t answer,” he said, “…but we have that answer now.”

Currently, in the Capital Region, women’s shelters are only located within Edmonton’s boundaries (except for one, which is in Sherwood Park). Women and children who try to access those shelters are sometimes faced with long waiting lists and are given the advice to try a shelter out of town.

Establishing a women’s shelter or safe house in the Morinville area would be a big deal.

JMMF Housing Committee members looked to start the project on a solid foundation; they worked goals and logistics, and they asked themselves what could they realistically achieve.

Throughout the summer, the group committed to getting this project off the ground, once and for all. They wrote more than a hundred letters and invited groups of people to talk with them.

government officials, industry experts, and [other] interested parties, and we discussed different aspects of the project,” noted Porlier.

“It went from Board Meetings to talk about what we all envisioned, to inviting more than 20 people to our group to talk about what would work, what might not, and what we should take into consideration.”

JMMF also consulted with folks representing numerous shelters from around the Province to understand what their challenges are and what their successes look like.

Porlier says the project has taken off, even more so than they first envisioned.

Floor plans and mock-ups for the safe house are developed; however, those plans may now be revised, according to the JMMF representative. He assures that this is good news because the change is related to a new development in the project, which is allowing the committee to dream bigger.

Staying tight lipped on any elaborations or additional details, such as where the project scope is heading or even in which municipality the group foresees the shelter being established, Porlier says all will be revealed in October during JMMF’s annual ‘Break Free Gala.'

“We are hoping to make some pretty amazing announcements at this year’s Gala that will cement our path to achieving the goal of a Safe House to service victims of domestic violence in the Sturgeon area, as well as the larger Alberta population.”

The Gala takes place on Oct. 22; all profits from this year’s event will go towards the shelter project. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased at Home Hardware in Morinville and at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre. More information on tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available on the JMMF website.

There are more than 350 municipalities in Alberta. Of all those communities, only 32 of them currently have shelters for victims of domestic violence.

In addition to its goal of developing a safe house in the Morinville area, JMMF also works tirelessly to raise awareness on domestic abuse, organizes self-defense classes, and offers vital outreach services to people in the area who face family violence.

The Town of Legal held their Regular Council Meeting Jan. 6 withCouncillor Kurtis Hauptman, Mayor Ken Baril, CAO Robert Proulx Councillor Pat Hills and Manager of Corporate Services St. Jean in attendance.

The year is starting strong with four development permits to be pro-cessed in the coming weeks.

Two members of Council, Councillor Hauptman and Deputy Mayor TremCarol blay, who are also part of the Recruitment Committee, are sched-uled to attend the Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) Community At-traction & Retention Conference to be held in March.

The seventh annual Community Conference theme is titled Shift Happens and includes a full agenda with opportunities for networking, sharing ideas on recruitment and retention strategies.

Last year more than 100 participants, representing more than 50 com-munities across Alberta, attended the conference.

A motion was also passed at the meeting to provide sponsorship for the Legal-Lerie newsletter for 2015. Council approved $1,680 in sponsorship for 12 issues, an $80 increase from 2014 sponsorship.

Programs cancelledThe Town of Legal annonced Friday on their Facebook page - that the Women’s Fllor Hockey and Learn to Skate programs would be cancelled due to lack of registrations.

Recycling factsLegal’s recycling program accepts and rejects a number of items, accoridng to recent Town of Legal information. Accepted items include: office paper, magazines, phone books, shredded paper, margarine containers, windshield washer fluid jugs, soup cans, milk cartons, pop cans. Unaccepted items include: styrofoam, plastic bags, bubble wrap, soiled paper, glass, leaves, yard waste, diapers, scrap metal, wood, batteries, lids, ceramics.

The Town also reports that the recycling trucks can only accomodate items less than 36 inches squared, and advises that cardboard be cut and bundled no larger than that size.

Food Bank receives number of donationsby Lucie RoyMorinville News Correspondent

The Morinville Food Bank received donations from the Morinville & District Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Morinville, and Champion Petfoods recently.

On Aug. 10, Leigh Newton of Champion Petfoods made a $530 donation for the Food Bank to Chamber Manager Diane Mineault and Chamber President Simon Boersma.

On Aug. 24, Newton made a presentation of another $500 for the Food Bank to the Rotary Club of Morinville. Accepting on behalf of the Club was President Simon Boersma and Tom Bell.

On Aug. 25 Morinville Food Bank Society President Ken Skjersven received a cheque for $1060 from the Chamber. Chamber Manager Dianne

Mineault said $530 was raised from the Chamber Golf Tournament by selling tickets on a large prize donated by Champion Petfoods. The amount raised was matched one-to-one by Champion.

In addition to the $1560 in cheques from Champion, Rotary, and the Chamber, Skjersven said the Morinville Food Bank also received $500 and 1000 pounds of food from the Blue Suede Music Festival held in Busby Aug. 19 to 21. That event collected 4000 pounds of food, which was distributed between a soup kitchen, and the Barrhead, Morinville, and Westlock Food Banks.

The donations will greatly help the Food Bank who have seen twice the people in need but received half the donations they normally do in summer. The Food Bank is appealing to Morinville and Sturgeon County residents and businesses to help them help others. Though the Food Bank is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, Skjersven said people can phone 780-939-2636 and leave a message 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make pickup or drop off arrangements.

Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling CompetitionThe Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition took place in Morinville Aug. 27, the first time the annual competition has been in Alberta. This year’s event drew 34 competitors from across the country. About 650 fiddle fans came out for Saturday’s event. The weekend also included a dance and show Friday night and a fiddle jam Sunday.

Breaking the rules

Primeau student Kevin Hessell was one of many to pay $2 for the Break the Rules/Build a School fundraiser held last week at the school. Hessell said his pass allowed him to break a rule every day. Broken rules through the week included having a Kapow pop in class, allowing electronic devices at lunch, wearing hats all day, hanging out in the hall-way, and wearing PJs on Friday.

The school goal is to raise $10,000 to-wards the Pope Francis Elementary School building in the Philippines, a project in part-nership with Development and Peace. The GSACRD goal is to raise $200,000.

Coats for Kids

École Notre Dame students are collecting Coats for Kids until Nov. 25 to support the Midstream Sup-port Society.

Students heading the project include Hannah Ralph, Emily Chias-son, Alyssa Smith, Alex Kitzan and Clare Rolleston (right).

Acceptable items being collect-ed include a focus on gently used coats, toques, gloves, mittens, scarves, snow pants, ear muffs, and boots. Other warm clothing for indoor and outdoor use including long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and thermal layers are accepted for all ages.

The Midstream Support Society Community Corner Drop-in helps members of the communi-ty by providing gently used clothing, household items, furniture and appliances in working condi-tion at little cost to the shopper. They also have

a Supplies for Students Program, assist with the Christmas Hamper Program, hold a Family Christmas Party and Supper and operate the an-nual Santa Store, which allows parents in need to obtain gifts for their children.

Culture Days to feature Oktoberfest and Maker Spaceby Morinville News Staff

Alberta Culture Days run from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, and the province is expecting a full weekend of hands-on art workshops, live musical performances, historical exhibits, and a wide variety of artistic and cultural activities.

Alberta Culture Days is part of National Culture Days, a movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the artistic and cultural life of their communities.

“Alberta Culture Days is a wonderful celebration of Alberta’s diverse and vibrant art and culture community, highlighting all the amazing aspects that make this province so unique," said Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism in a government release. "The arts and cultural sector not only improves our quality of life but is also a significant economic driver supporting local businesses and creating jobs.”

More than 71 communities and organizations held 884 events in 2015, drawing more than 130,000 Albertans to take part in the activities.

Locally, the Town of Morinville's Community Services Department is still planning the full weekend; however, Shaun Peters Events and Culture Coordinator for the Town told Morinville News Oktoberfest will take place during the Culture Days weekend.

"We are still in the midst of finalizing details for Alberta Culture Days," Peters said, noting Oktoberfest is happening that same weekend. "It is setting up to be a great (full-day) of activities."

Peters went on to say this year's Oktoberfest is sponsored by Deford Contracting Inc. and will include Vinok Folkdance Ensemble, Emeralds, EVVA (volksmarch), dachshunds, an accordion player, an organ grinder, and a Volkswagen Auto Club Car Show with nostalgic bugs and buses.

Peters sees Culture Days as an important provincial initiative."Alberta Culture Days began as a single day Albertans got to recognize

and celebrate the value of arts and culture in their communities," Peters explained. "Since then it has blossomed into a vibrant three-day province-wide celebration. Alberta Culture Days has helped inspire the creation of awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in arts and culture, and we want to do the same in Morinville."

The Morinville Public Library will be launching their new Maker Space items on Oct. 1. Library staff member Ashley James told Morinville News the library had applied for a $1300 grant from the government to help them fund Culture Days events at the library but were unsuccessful in getting the funding.

"We had to cancel a bunch of our [planned] programming because we can't ask people to do stuff for free," James said. "What we are

doing on the first is launching our Maker Space."

The Maker Space will include approximately a dozen age-appropriate boxes in the realm of science and arts, and will be available free for people to come in and use. The library is planning to designate a special area to showcase the Maker Space items.

The Morinville Mixed Slo-Pitch Association Red Eye Tournament took place over the weekend at the Skyline Ball Diamonds. Teams started playing Friday evening and played continuously until Sunday afternoon, competing in A, B, C, and D Divisions. Final results were not available by our press deadline.

1/2 (2 mL) tsp Sensations by Compliments Roasted Garlic Seasoning Paste

1 tbsp (15 mL) extra virgin olive oil, divided

6 slices Sensations by Compliments Ciabatta Baguette

4 large tomatoes

2 tsp (10 mL) Sensations by Compliments Aged Balsamic Vinegar of Modena

1/4 cup (60 mL) fresh Compliments Basil leaves, coarsely chopped

1/4 tsp (2 mL) salt

DIRECTIONS

1/ Heat barbecue to high. In a small bowl, combine garlic seasoning paste and 1/2 tsp (2 mL) olive oil. Brush one side of baguette slices with garlic and oil mixture. Grill oil side down for 1 to 2 min. or until grill marks appear. Cube bread into large pieces and transfer to salad bowl. Cut tomatoes and add to bowl. Toss salad with remaining olive oil, balsamic vinegar, basil and salt.

SPEEDING – Maximum is 30km/h from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days.

CROSSWALKS – Pay close attention around all crosswalks.

U-TURNS IN SCHOOL ZONES – U-turns are prohibited in school zones and between intersections. Plan ahead and use an appropriate route.

PARKING ZONES – Parking is restricted in school zones to allow for proper access for children. Pay attention and abide by all parking signs.

PASSING SCHOOL BUSES – All vehicles must stop and remain stopped when bus lights are flashing.
