Paradigm Shift: Blockchain Set to Revolutionise Real Estate &

Construction Industry

While the influence of technology has permeated every industry and sector conceivable, whether it’s Banking, Manufacturing or Healthcare, the role technology is playing in shaping the real estate & construction industry is of transforma-tional nature. Of particular interest is the role new-gen technologies like Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), Machine learning, Artificial Intel-ligence and Robotics are playing in shaping the industry. And among them Blockchain related technologies seems to be most talked about and most misconstrued as well. Industry pundits, across the globe, seem to reckon that Block-chain could have a large and lasting impact on the way real estate gets done, but it requires big changes, not just minor tweaks.Estimates peg the global market for Blockchain at $708 million in 2017, anticipating it to reach anywhere close to $60.7 billion in 2024. Hence the impact this technology is poised to play in the near future cannot be undermined. However, before we delve any further on how Blockchain is set to impact the industry, we need to under-stand the underlying technology. At the core of

it, Blockchain is a digital ledger containing dig-ital record of transactions, maintained by a net-work of computers. This means information of a financial or non-financial transaction is shared with a decentralised network and validated by the entire network. With Blockchain technol-ogy, one can transfer assets digitally without the need for a central verifying authority. This is in itself is a revolutionary way of doing things. A Blockchain framework effectively reduces the chances of data manipulation and leaves lesser scope for a hacker to corrupt the computer sys-tem.While the legality of cryptocurrencies is still being debated in India, companies have begun shifting focus to the utility of Blockchain tech-nology. According to an industry report, 56% of Indian businesses are inclined to make Block-chain a part of their core business. You may ask, how does it all Pan-out for the real estate & construction industry? The answer is that, Blockchain could open up newer models of ownerships like shared ownership helping first time buyers to purchase only part of property and proportionately earn rental incomes on the same.In the construction industry, which requires bringing together large teams to design and shape the built environment the potential uses of this technology can be a real differentiator. With technology and in particular Building Information Modeling (BIM) becoming more widespread, openness to collaboration and new ideas is increasing across the industry. This momentum could be leveraged to bring the use of Blockchain technology to the fore. The potential uses of Blockchain, among many could

be: Recording Value Exchange; Administering Smart Contracts; Combining Smart Contracts to form a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO); and finally certifying proof of existence for certain data.Hence, through this technology there is an opportunity to create a leaner procurement method which better engages the individuals who make up a project team. This will result in reducing costs by removing intermediaries, where a client has more control and transpar-ency of cost, time and scope on their project.A Blockchain-powered online ledger could overcome complications on multiple owners by securely and reliably tracking the size and value of individual stakes in the property in the same way as stock in companies is recorded on exchanges. Incorporated into land dealings and real estate, Blockchain could provide immense business opportunity in the future making way to a reliable property search, efficient manage-ment of property and cash flows. Blockchain integration constantly records and shares infor-mation to address traditional process inefficien-cies in the commercial real estate industry. While there are more advantages to it, there are few hurdles that the industry collectively needs to address before capitalising on the benefits of Blockchain. The adoption of Blockchain in real estate would require legislative changes, stan-dardisation and education around Blockchain concepts so that every stakeholder understands the various stages of the transaction. The suc-cess or failure of this attempt will surely deter-mine how government organizations feel about implementing these solutions in the future.

the way AP is growing, it would do great in international business and not just domes-tic business in the coming years”, he said.Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu informed the panel members that after the bifur-cation, AP was number 2 state in terms of ease of doing business. “Over the last two years, we have been rated number one state in terms of doing business in India by the World Bank”, he said. SoftBank Robotics Europe Selects Cognizant for Quality Assurance of Artificial Intelligence Systems in Pepper and

NAO Humanoid Robots

How an IIT-Bombay startup is leveraging an innovative distribution channel to sell its products

Cognizant announced it has been selected by SoftBank Robotics Europe, a leader in human-oid robotics, to provide Quality Engineering and Assurance (QE&A) services for the artificial intelligence (AI) systems in the popular Pepper and NAO robots. Cognizant’s expertise ensures high quality machine-human interactions and will enable SoftBank Robotics Europe to scale pro-duction to meet rising global demand in sectors such as retail, healthcare, tourism and education. Cognizant’s QE&A engineers dedicated to AI, based in Grenoble, France, will develop a stan-dardised testing protocol for the NAOqi operat-ing system – the two robots’ “brains” – as well as their default applications for speech recognition, movement perception and obstacle and collision avoidance, to ensure optimal performance. Cog-nizant will also provide testing services for the development toolkit and content management system, as well as testing applications developed

Atomberg Technologies, a multi-award winning startup launched by IIT-Bombay alumni, has cre-ated an innovative distribution channel to dis-tribute their flagship fans in Mumbai. These fans, which go by the name “Gorilla Fans” are based on the state-of-the-art Brushless DC technology that is more energy efficient than even the five-star ceiling fans available in the market. The Gorilla Fans consume just 28 watts of energy, even when

by partners, to ensure conformity to rules and policies throughout SoftBank Robotics Europe’s entire value chain.Cognizant’s advanced testing capabilities will also enable SoftBank Robotics Europe to develop apps more quickly, allowing their Pepper and NAO robots to be even more intuitive, agile and personalized. Today, these robots are mainly being used in shops and public places to wel-come, inform and entertain customers, and in educational settings, such as helping children to learn in a unique and fun way.“In Cognizant, we found a partner with proven capabilities in testing and assessing the quality of advanced artificial intelligence software. In our case, that means ensuring high-quality humanoid robots work flawlessly and are increasingly able to safely and securely interact with humans by understanding their behaviour and expectations in a variety of situations,” said Charles Broussaud-

operated at their highest speed.Atomberg (https://atomberg.com/) started manu-facturing these fans back in November 2015, and within six months, their sales reached 1,000 fans per month and currently, the company is selling 12,000 fans per month, with a capacity to pro-duce 30,000 fans per month. The Gorilla Fans are one of the highest rated and reviewed products on e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart with online sales of around 2,000 fans per month. The total sales of these Gorilla Fans through e-commerce has been around 20,000 fans. Recently, Atomberg innovated a new distribution channel wherein they tied-up with Tata Power to provide the Gorilla Fans to the customers in Mumbai at a subsidized price under the Demand-Side Management (DSM) scheme. Tata Power has initiated many programmes to promote energy efficiency at consumer premises and this scheme is approved by Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). The main objective of this programme is to reduce energy consumption by providing energy-efficient products to people at subsidized rates.“Under Tata Power Demand-Side Management [DSM] programme, we motivate customers to give up energy-guzzling appliances. Gorilla fans provide huge energy savings,” says Shekhar Khadilkar, head DSM & power management, Tata Power, Mumbai distribution. Commenting on the initiative, and acknowledging Gorilla Fans, Mr. Ashok Sethi, COO and Executive Director, Tata

ier, CIO at SoftBank Robotics Europe. “Cognizant understands that the success of our humanoid robots lies in their ability and quality of their operation. Comprehensive QE&A capabilities are crucial, helping us reduce costs, scale our business globally and speed time to market for updates and functionality enhancements.”“Success in the digital economy means reimagin-ing products and experiences at speed and scale with a clear understanding of the customer’s needs and expectations,” said Santosh Thomas, President, Global Growth Markets, Cognizant. “Today, robotics technology is moving at a fast pace and is already enriching experiences, pro-viding guidance and assisting people in need. Our unique QE&A skills will help ensure quality through the entire artificial intelligence system, and enable faster development and introduction of new features, ultimately boosting the adoption of robotics as a way of further improving lives.”

Power, said, “Energy management and conserva-tion are more important today than ever before, and innovative technologies like the BLDC tech-nology can be a game changer for it.”Ever since the tie-up, Atomberg has sold more than 7,000 fans through the Demand-Side Man-agement programme in Mumbai, thereby winning the trust of B2C clients as well. These fans have a smart remote control, which has speed control, sleep, and timer mode. If you’re a residential con-sumer, you’ll be eligible to procure four fans for just Rs. 1,750, against Rs. 3,500, which is the mar-ket price, as the additional cost will be supported by the DSM scheme. The products will be home delivered to the con-sumers who register for the program. The con-sumers would also get a three-year warranty on these Gorilla Fans delivered through the DSM scheme. Other than TATA, Atomberg has also tied-up with Reliance under a similar scheme to distribute efficient fans at an effective price in Mumbai. To be a part of this programme and avail the benefits of this scheme, consumers can regis-ter themselves at the online portal or call at the 24X7 call center of their utility - Reliance or TATA. Once you register yourself with either of the utilities, they send a list of registered customers along with your details to Atomberg. Atomberg then arranges for the home delivery of your fans at rates, which are more cost-effective than mar-ket rates.

Total Mobile Subscribers Base grows to 988.49 million

Confed Plans Summit In Pondy; Office Bearers Assures Profitability For Members, Sponosors

COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India), the apex industry association representing the country’s major Telecom, Internet, Tech-nology & Digital Services companies, released the latest telecom subscriber numbers, for the month ending January 2018. As per the data, India’s private telecom service providers have a total of 988.49 million subscribers. The data also includes the figures of Reliance Jio Info-comm Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) by the end of December 2017 (Source: TRAI). Amongst the individual com-panies, Bharti Airtel Ltd continues to hold the top position, with 29.50% market share, adding another 15,02,755 subscribers during January, to take its total subscriber base to 291.61 mil-lion subscribers. Airtel is closely followed by Vodafone India Ltd, which ended January with 213.81 million subscribers, while Idea Cellular Ltd stood at 197.64 million subscribers at the end of the first month of the year. The report, which also provides mobile sub-scriber numbers for individual circles, showed

Confed ITA is geared up for the new team and the association is planning to conduct their annual flagship event viz AGM and summit in Puducherry. Sujay K Vijayan, president-elect of the association shares his plan for the associa-tion. The summit is slated to happen in April at Puducherry. The event is planned to happen for two days where the agenda is designed in such a way members, distributors and vendors [spon-sors] take value out of the event. What is new on cards?Generally the events are vendor-driven. However, not just this expo, but also the entire tenure will be driven through the sub-distributors who are again our members. Volume players who are sup-porting the association and its activities will be given priority. That way, we are creating coupons which distributors can buy. The coupons have different values and when the members do any

that the UP (East) circle remained at the top with a total of 85.58 million subscribers, while Maha-rashtra remained at second position with a total of 81.56 million mobile subscribers. Talking about the increase in the subscriber base, Rajan S Mathews, Director General, COAI, said,

“The increased numbers are a glimmer of hope for the sector, which is going through one of its dark-

est phases due to hyper competition and poor financial health. All the operators have signifi-cantly expanded their services across the coun-try, and have begun heavily diversifying their services beyond voice & data for the consumer. The industry has ensured that Government’s Digital India programme reaches the farthest corners of the country and everyone reaps the benefit of new communication technologies.”“Our member operators have made a further

billings from the distributors, the latter will send the coupon along with the invoices. The members can redeem the same for any association-related activities in stead of paying money. This way, for the member, it will be an enthusiasm to sell more and redeem the money. That way, the regional and sub distributors who are supporting the asso-ciation will be given priority. Also, we ensure that this coupon is strictly for the distributors who are members of the association. First of all this is a business association. We are all in the asso-ciation only because we are in the IT business. That way, we want to ensure a win-win situation for both resellers and the distributors to ensure a smooth value-chain. We are also planning to have an event overseas. The members can also redeem the coupon for this event. The details of the event will be shared later. How is the response for this?So far so good. We had seen good number in the

commitment to invest another INR 74,000 crores in their recent meeting at the DoT, for enhanced consumer experience and seamless connectivity. However, Right of Way (RoW) and myths around EMF continue to remain imped-iment for the industry for accessing current sites. We urge the government and our citi-zens to help us, serve them better,” he further added. Mobile connectivity and data services have played a pivotal role in bridging the dig-ital divide and moving India towards a truly equitable and democratic nation. The telecom industry, therefore, deserves an urgent and immediate intervention to encourage policy and regulatory stability, and facilitate growth, innovation and investment in the sector in view of the mounting financial debt and debilitating financial health of the industry. The industry remains committed towards working for a fully connected and digitally empowered India and, furthering the Hon Prime Minister’s vision of Digital India.

sale of coupons. Many distributors had person-ally called me and appreciated. If they are making business, why will they hesitate to give offers for their own buyers? I am sure this will change the phase of channel business in Tamil Nadu.Whatever you had told holds good for product sellers. What is for service partners and software segment? We are in touch with an ERP software who will be supporting the association and will recruit our members for training, franchising and other deployments. Also, their software will be sold at cost-to-cost exclusively for the members for their internal use. There are some members who are using high-end ERP products. However, there are many who still use spreadsheet software for their purpose. What are the other innovation in the pipeline? The biggest challenge is the unavailability of skilled human resource. We are planning to start academic practice on behalf of the association. It will be a collaboration with the existing vendors. The vendors will train the employees of the mem-bers. That way, the members will also have no issue in find the right human resource. What is there for sponsors? The sponsors will have special parallel sessions and breakfast meetings with the prospective channel partners in the summit. This will be addi-tional interaction opportunity for the vendors and spend quality timing with the partners. Also, with more distributors coming into the center stage of the association activities, I am sure that will directly impact in the number of any vendors who are sponsoring the association.
