BIO This is one of my favourite courses to teach and I hope that some of my excitement passes on to the students! We started the year with a Biochemistry unit. We have conducted several labs to learn about the macromolecules that are present in various foods. We recently completed an independent lab where the students were given a problem: Do the enzymes in our saliva break down starch into smaller monosaccharides? The students then had to work in pairs to discover a way to develop a conclusion to this problem. Needless to say this lab, which involves spitting foods into test tubes, is one that really tests my “gag reflex”. I was very excited, in a completely science nerd way, when all of the Bio students developed their own procedures for testing their hypothesises!

KINDERGARTEN !Chicka Chicka Boom Boom….We’re Having Fun in

the Kindergarten Room!

This year we have 18 eager young children in Kindergarten. On the first day of school we jumped right in to learning all about letters and numbers using the popular children’s books Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Chicka Chicka 1 2 3! We ended the month with some Boom Chicka Pop popcorn at snack time. During centre time we work hard at practising our skills as students transform into amazing architects, story writers, artists, busy adults, and clever scientists. We are looking forward to learning about pumpkins, Thanksgiving and of course….Halloween! Mrs. Brehaut

GRADE 3/4 !To improve reading fluency, I have been collaborating with Ms. Bue (Early Literacy Consultant) to create a program that will hopefully engage more students. Through songs and poetry, students will have an opportunity to learn to read with expression and become more confident readers! Stayed tuned for more information.

GRADE 5/6 !The Grade 5-6 class was excited to invite

family members to the school to participate in a Readers Theatre "Biography Edition" event on September 30th.  Parents had the opportunity to view several biographies with their child and learn many new interesting facts about several inspirational people in society; past and present.  Students and parents were treated to snacks and great literature completed by the students.  Thank you to the parents who could take time out of their busy day to join the students in the library for the event.  The Grade 5-6 class should be extremely proud of their accomplishment by completing a picturesque cover page, a great hook, awesome information, a conclusion and an informative bibliography.  The biographies will be hanging in the hallway for the next little while for parents to stop by and read the documents if they were unable to make it to the Readers Theatre.

HISTORY 10 !Grade 9 and 10 students are working on a History 10 credit this semester. They have greatly impressed me with their memories! We began the year with a unit on “Political Decision Making.” We have worked on concepts such as: freedom, power and absolutism. We have also spent time learning about the exploits of “The Sun King” Louis the XIV. Students seemed especially interested in the elaborate clothing and perfume that the French king liked to wear. They also had some laughs when we talked about the King’s skills with the ladies. I enjoyed taking the “Which enlightenment thinker are you?” face book style quizzes that the students created when learning about the enlightenment in Europe. We are now working on The French Revolution and will be moving on to a unit on the Industrial Revolution soon! !I would like to thank all of the parents and students for welcoming me back to the school! I am really enjoying getting to know all of my students. Mrs. Friesen

REPORT CARD CHANGE

NEW REPORTING SCALE Changes in the Report Card Scale South  East  Cornerstone  Public  School  Division’s  report  card  scale  will look different this year. The change reinforces the philosophy that the reporting reflects a moment in time snapshot of student achievement.    The  new  word  “Mastered”  ties  student  achievement  to the descriptors in the curriculum outcome. The other notable change  is  that  “Approaching”  has  become  “Attained”.    This  will  more accurately reflect student levels of achievement.

Meeting has

become Mastered

Approaching has become Attained

Attained reflects that a student is working at grade

level.

Attained and Mastery are both Green in colour.

Changes made as a result of

teacher, parent, and stakeholder

feedback.

Did you know that reading aloud to young children builds motivation, curiosity, and memory?

Cross Country

Thanks to Breck Van Meer, Sydney Dorrance, Kati Van Winkoop, Emmett McCarthy, Walker Porter, Austin Johnson, Beth McCarthy, Anna McCarthy and Lucas Porter for participating! I was very proud of the students who competed with everything they had at the Weyburn meet! !Golf

We had 19 participants in all three levels of golf this year - Rookie, Junior and Senior. Devin Stewart was our only senior golfer this year. He participated in the

Senior Championship at Golf Kenosee on Sept 15, 2014. Devin scored well, but he was against some great competitors. We had 11 golfers that were in our junior category. We could only send 4 males to the junior championship in Rocanville so two playoffs rounds were held at Golf Kenosee. We ended up sending two girls and four boys to Rocanville on September 26th, 2014. Trevor Stewart finished tied for third place. Our rookie golfers had some opportunity to work on their skills on the driving range. They were also able to get in

two nine hole rounds of golf course teeing off from the 150 yard markers. Our wind-up was held on October 1st. We decided to play a parent/child two person best ball format. 14 parent/child groups came out and braved the cold weather. We enjoyed a great supper at Club 19 after golf. Thanks to all the golfers for a great season. We have seen so much improvement from each of you this year. A big thank you to all the parent volunteers for driving students to the course and staying to supervise. Last but not least a HUGE thank you to Golf Kenosee for their reduced rates that enable us to get on the course as much as we do. Caoches: Elly Van Winkoop, Quin Kleiboer

Volleyball The Junior Boys Volleyball season is in full swing with the boys playing a number of exhibition games and a tournament in Arcola, on October 4th.  The team placed second in the tournament, but took a tough Arcola team to three grueling sets.  The team is comprised of a number of grade 8 boys, two grade 9's, and one grade 7.  As the schedule picks up, expect the boys to continue to improve and work towards the high goals that they set for themselves at the beginning of the year.  This talented group wants your support, so we hope to see you in the gym for future games!

Reducing Anxiety in Your Pre K and Kindergarten Children

Anxiety (we teach children to say: ang-zye-uh-tee) is a big word that means feeling scared and nervous. The feeling comes from a worry, an upsetting situation, or a thought that is hard to let go. Sometimes it occurs for no real reason. Many children become anxious as they begin their school year. This anxiety can be expressed in many forms. Anxious children may shed tears, express anger toward others, become introverted or have toileting accidents. Parents or caregivers can help to relieve these anxious feelings in young children. Here are a few tips to help along the way.

x Be positive and reassure your child that school is a good place. x Don’‛t linger to say good-bye. Give your child a hug or a kiss and walk out the

door. x Reassure your child that you will be back to pick him/her up. Talk to your

child about the after school routine. Make sure your child knows who will be there for pick up and ensure that person is on time.

x Be sure your child knows what to expect. Go through the handbook provided to you at orientation and talk to your child about the expectations.

x Children need to be well rested in order to feel refreshed, alert and ready to face daily challenges. 3-5 year olds typically need 11-13 hours of sleep each night.

x Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. If you run out of time to eat at home, take it along. Teachers are usually very accommodating.

x Provide nutritious snacks: fresh fruit, crackers and cheese, pickles, almonds, vegetables and dip. Avoid prepackaged foods that contain additives and lots of sugar.

x Throughout the year consult the calendar to ensure your child comes to school with special items for special days. Prepare your child by talking about the upcoming events.

x Talk to your child each night about the events of the day. Young children love to share and this is a great language building activity.

With you providing this support, your child will be well on their way to becoming a successful learner.

Enterorvirus D68 Fact Sheet

What is an enterovirus? x Enteroviruses are a large group of viruses that can cause

a number of illnesses, including lung infections

What is Enterorvirus D68? x Enterovirus D68 most often affects children, particularly

those under the age of five. Children with breathing troubles, such as asthma or allergies, are more at risk

x This infection is most often seen in the fall x It is not the flu (influenza)

Is it serious? It can be serious. Some children have needed hospitalization, sometimes in the intensive care unit

Symptoms: This virus starts off like a cold but can get worse and may cause breathing problems. Symptoms can include: x Runny or stuffy nose or sneezing x Cough x Wheezing (particularly if there is a history of asthma

or past wheezing) x Chest congestion x Difficulty breathing x Body aches

If your child gets sick: x Keep the child at home until better x Get them to rest x Provide plenty to drink x Treat the fever (with acetaminophen or

ibuprofen – never give Aspirin) x Antibiotics do NOT kill viruses

Children with asthma may need to take more asthma medicines.

When to see your doctor or go to Emergency:

If your child has: x Rapid breathing or trouble breathing x Wheezing x Coughing continuously x Not able to sleep x Hard time keeping fluids down

Stop the spread: x Wash hands often with soap and water for at least

20 seconds x Use hand sanitizer x Avoid touching face without washing hands x Avoid contact with others who are sick x Clean areas of the home often touched (i.e. door

knobs, computers, counters, remotes) x Cough or sneeze into your elbow
