Spring has just arrived with us, the evenings are getting clearer and the daffodils
and spring flowers are starting to blossom. As quoted by Charles Dickens: ‘It was
one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when
it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade’.

The Friends of Bindley Manor held a ‘Mock Wedding of the year’ in aid of the patients comfort fund on the 10th February 2012. This was a memorable event for both the staff and the residents of Brindley Manor. The night proved a great success and over €3,000 was raised for the fund. The wedding cast roles were gender reversed (men played the roles of women and vice versa). The wedding took place in Kee’s Hotel, Stranorlar, Co. Donegal.
The wedding party assembled at Brindley Manor at 5pm to commence hair & make up. Hair was completed by Olive Devine and make up by beautician Ciara Lynch. The Wedding party had pictures taken by photographer Austin O’Callaghan before being chauffeured to the Hotel by Columba Gavigan in the ‘Brindley Bus’. Hotel Manager, Paul was waiting to greet the wedding party with a red carpet reception and champagne.
The Bride (Care Assistant Liam Deeney aka Hilda Bucket) looked stunning in a full length A-line dress and was given away by her father (Care Assistant Claire Doherty aka John Bucket). The bride then stood alongside her husband to be (ADON Ursula McGowan aka Henry Muck). The ceremony kicked off with a feud between the wedding couple’s mothers (Company Accoutnant Martin Callaghan and Staff Nurse Noel Thomas) as they both happened to be wearing the same outfit. Mrs Bucket couldn't quite establish how such a lower class citizen as Mrs Muck could afford such an expensive outfit out of Brown Thomas, Mrs
Muck was quick to inform her that her husband had sold a calf at Raphoe cattle mart and gave her the
money.
A beautiful solo piece was then sung by Maria Doherty, just be-fore the readings. Rev Dibley (DON Ann MacCombe) seem to have great difficulty in remembering the brides name and the pronunciation of her surname, needless to say Rev. Dibley had a bit too much to drink whilst helping herself to the wine throughout the service.
Mock Wedding of the Year!
Rev Dibley asked the congregation was there anyone present know of any reason why the marriage not go ahead, they were asked to speak now or forever hold their peace. To the bride’s distress, Amanda Torrens stood up and said that’s she is merely just fixing her dress, then Teresa Blackburn announces she ‘kissed the bride and I liked it’ then the full congregation bursts in the singing the song “I kissed a girl and I like it” by Katy Perry. The wedding ceremony concluded with the gifts, exchanging of the rings and vows. Henry and Hilda were then pronounced husband and wife.
The wedding ceremony was followed by an evening reception where speeches were made from the top table. While guest enjoyed their buffet and refreshments, local comedian Aussie Bryson told a few old yarns from many a years ago. Tickets for the raffle went on sale for various sponsored items. Local MC Paddy McMenamin kept the guests entertained with his light hearted humour throughout the evening. The band—Smokey and the Bandit was followed by a disco with DJ Lee. Everyone danced in to the early hours.
The Friends of Brindley Manor would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help and contribution in organising this event and look forward to organising another enjoyable event in the near future.
