BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2019 Superintendent’s Corner It is unbelievable to think that it is December already. It seems like we just began the school year. November brought us winter much sooner than in the past year and the temperature was much colder. I hope this is not an indication of how bitter the winter months may be. I am hopeful that we do not have the same amount of snow and cold as we did last year. It looks like we will have a white Christmas again this year. With the snow coming early this year, perhaps we will have an early spring and not the three feet of snow we got last April. In any case, get out and enjoy the snow with your family and make some memories. Christmas vacation begins on Friday, December 20th, with an 11:30 a.m. dismissal. Classes will resume on January 6th, 2020. One of the very special events that takes place in our school every year, is the Christmas Program. This year the program will be held on December 19th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Directed by our Band/Music Teacher, Mr. Arendt, the Christmas Program involves all students and staff, grades K-6, along with the Middle School/High School Band. Please join us on December 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the middle school gymnasium and help us begin the holiday season with some special music by our very special students. On behalf of the Brimley Area Schools, I would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. Hopefully, the holidays will provide all of us with the opportunity to spend quality time with our families and friends. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Brimley Area Schools looks forward to the year 2020 with anticipation of continued excellence and success. School Closings and Delays We are in the time of year when weather may affect the opening of school. Whenever there is inclement weather, a decision to either close school for the day, or to delay the opening of school must be made by 6:00 a.m.

If school is closed , or the opening delayed, we will send a message via our parent notification system, School Messenger. This message will be sent by phone, email, and text, if you have provided that information to the school. Closings and delays will also be reported over local radio stations and television stations. If there is a two hour delayed opening, school will start at 10:15 instead of 8:15. The buses will run two hours later than normal. Breakfast will not be served when there is delayed opening. Each day, our seven buses transport approximately 330 students a total of 300 miles. The safety of our children on these buses is our number one priority. Whenever a decision needs to be made regarding the closing of school, or to delay the opening of school, the decision will be made with the welfare of our students and faculty/staff in mind. Respectfully, Mr. Reattoir Superintendent

- Mr. Veeneman

Thank you for the support of our Board of Education, Superintendent Mr. Reattoir, and Middle School/High School Principal, Miss Hyvarinen for making this new Technology in the WoodShop possible.

We have incorporated a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Router into the shop. This machine will give all students the opportunity to learn how CNC machines work. CNC machines are in one form or another used in many small and large manufacturing facilities. The machines and their operators are in great demand in multiple facets of manufacturing, such as: Medical, Aerospace, automobile, product picking/movement in warehouses, i.e. Amazon and so many more.

Students will learn to design projects with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and machine what they have designed with essentially the push of a

button. The use of this technology will help make our students more marketable for skilled employment opportunities.

What’s new in 10th grade American Literature?  Mrs. Palmateer’s sophomores have begun reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. The novel’s protagonist Huck is a very adaptive character. During his adventures in the story, he manifests skills beyond that of a typical teenager. To understand Huck’s character better, the class thought it was time to see how adaptive they could be in learning some essential sewing skills popular in the 19th century. The students who had never sewn picked up on it easily!  Pictured is a sample of the fine sewing skills.

Brimley Art -Ms.LaLonde To recognize and celebrate Native American Month in November the Elementary Art classes K-6 prepared for the Thanksgiving holiday by learning about the crucial role Native Americans played in early European immigration to the New World. We made Indian corn, turkeys, gratitude pumpkins, and “Thankful” Fall trees. MS and HS students were blessed with a visit from a guest artist, Ms. Anny Hubbard, a Sault Sainte Marie, internationally renowned artist. She brought her traditional knowledge of Birch Bark Cut-Outs to share with students and explained how she learned to use Birch bark as a child and uses it today to create her unique art.

Middle School Health- Mr. Moore

In a lesson about community health, we talked about the importance of taking pride in your community, and how that included taking care of your community. Our junior high health divided into five small groups and walked the perimeter of the school cleaning up and picking up

garbage. In only 35 minutes we filled THREE garbage bags!

News from the Elementary School

Happy start of Winter! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family and friends. We have a few short, but jam-packed weeks until Christmas Break. I’d like to take a few minutes to highlight some of our November activities and illustrate what we have planned for the month of December.

Veterans’ Assembly

In November, we had our Veterans’ Day Assembly. Students and community members were able to partake in an assembly filled with music and speeches in order to give honor and remembrance to our nation's veterans. Mr. Hoornstra, a World War II Veteran, was honored as our local hero, and Mr. Arendt lead the band through some wonderful patriotic songs. Students were very respectful and learned a lot about the sacrifice our service members make when serving our country. A great thing to see was how at the end of the assembly, many of our students went up to shake Mr. Hoornstra’s hand, and thank him for his service.

Boys Basketball

Elementary Boys Basketball is underway with 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. The schedule is posted online on our school website. Our coaches have a good group of boys and are looking forward to the season. Please direct any questions on practice/game times, eligibility, or anything else pertaining to elementary basketball to Mr. Clarke.

LifeSpan

Ms Hills and Ms Finfrock have begun teaching the Lifespan program which provides lessons that highlight healthy living and nutritional health. Students were able to participate in lessons that talked about a wide array of healthy living and food choices, and even got to sample some treats that were made up in class.

Penny Savers

Mrs. Carol Brown from Soo Coop Credit Union has begun the Penny Savers Program with our 5th and 6th grade classes. This program has two angles that benefit our students. First, Mrs. Brown will run the program as a section of SCCU. 5th and 6th grade students will interview with her to be able to partake in the various positions that the credit union would offer, such as bank tellers, accountants, and file organizers. Second, the program offers a place where Brimley students can save their change, and become more familiar with our banking systems.

Santa’s Workshop

Das Gift Haus is once again sponsoring Santa’s Workshop at our elementary school on December 12th and 13th. As in the past, this provides our students and staff with the chance to do some Christmas shopping for their family members. For the most part, gifts range from under $1 up to $5. . Please watch for the special Santa’s Workshop envelopes coming home in your child’s backpack. Several “elves” will be available to assist our small ones in making their purchases.

Christmas Program

Our Christmas program is taking place on December 19th, starting at 7pm. Information will soon be sent home with students on the logistics of the program, and each child’s specific schedule and responsibilities will be addressed. Any questions can be directed to Mr. Arendt, our music/band director, or to the classroom teacher.

Half Day

Friday, December 20th will be a half day for students. This marks the beginning of Christmas Break. School will resume on January 6th.

Cold Weather Clothing

Please be sure to send your child to school each day with proper recess clothing. Warm coats, snow pants, mittens/gloves, hats and boots are imperative with winter our winter weather.

Also, please make sure your child has shoes readily available to wear in school each day. Winter boots are to be worn outside only. Thank you for your help.

Lost and Found

Page 12: BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2019 · 2019-12-10 · BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2019 Superintendent’s Corner It is unbelievable to think that it is December

As the months move along, feel free to check our Lost & Found box for those “disappearing” articles of clothing! It is located outside the Superintendent's office.

Science Fair

Brimley Schools held our biannual Science Fair this November. Students displayed some pretty impressive projects this year as they tested hypotheses and demonstrated their skills with the scientific method. Below you will see the results of this year’s Fair. Winners will be headed to LSSU on December 6th to compete in the regional science fair. A very special thanks to Ms. Jill Peller for all the time and effort she put into organizing this year’s fair. Thanks also to Mrs. Jarvi, Mrs. Rutledge, Mrs. Detloff, Mrs. Hope, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Conley and Mrs. Stacy for their support in running our fair.

That wraps it up from Elementary Land. I hope everyone has a joyous Holiday and is able to spend some great time with family and friends.

always has a level 0 voice in the classroom, hallway, and bathroom. He is kind and helpful in our

classroom and at school. Mason is a responsible learner as he completes his tasks in a timely manner,

follows directions, and does a quality job. He also makes good decisions when it comes to safety and

Mrs. Dettloff My Student of the Month for November is Marie Willis. I am so thankful to have a student like Marie in my room. She has the strength to be respectful and make the right choices when others are not. She doesn't pass judgement, but just quietly makes the right choices and sets a good example. Marie isn't the student to blurt an answer or take over a discussion. She waits for her turn and listens intently while others share their thoughts. I like that she does not allow herself to be influenced by others and always stays true to herself. She is a hard worker who never looks for the easy answer, takes a zero, or skips an assignment. Page 19: BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2019 · 2019-12-10 · BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2019 Superintendent’s Corner It is unbelievable to think that it is December

is such a helpful leader. Daily, Leila is one of the first to be ready to learn, as well as, one of the first to finish her work because of her constant dedication to learning! Also, when she is finished with her assignments, Leila willingly helps other classmates. Leila Downs is a role model to the other 6th grade Bays! Great job Leila and continue to make Brimley proud! Mrs. Stacy

This month’s Student of the Month for Mr. Conley’s room is able to take the discussion a step further, is very kind, and willing to help any student that is struggling in a given area. Often when done with his own work this student will help others finish their work. One of the best ways of understanding a topic is being able to teach it to someone else, and this student excels in that area. I am pleased to announce that Student of the Month for November in Mr. Conley’s class is Derek Carrick. Mr. Conley
