Brighton has always been proud of its long standingassociation with motoring in all its branches. From theearliest days our town has been popular with motorists andperhaps it is only natural that the sporting events which areheld here are as popular as any of the many varied eventsheld in Brighton during the year. This is largely due to theenthusiasm and drive of the Brighton & Hove Motor Club.To-day, once again, we have to thank them for the wonderfulorganisation of the Brighton Speed Trials.

To everyone who will be taking part in the trials and toall the many thousands who will be here to enjoy the thrillingspectacle. I offer my best wishes for a thoroughly enjoyableday.

Cars waiting their tUTO at the Start-190S. Run in the opposite direction

D/IIMIJND Jill/lEEThe Diamond Jubilee of the classic of Speed Trials - Sixty years of progressand memories - nostalgia perhaps, but remember that in those far-off dayscars were the prerogative of the wealthy, whilst in these days even theimpecunious can buy and modify a popular car and have a reasonablechance of an award in his class.

In 1905 the cars were invariably huge, heavy, fearsome machines, requiringgreat physical strength in many cases to drive, with large capacity low revvingengines, chains thrashing, thin tyres attempting to find grip on the road, through the" horse and cart" designed suspension - truly the " golden age."

The 1905 event was fortunately blessed with ideal weather - we hopethat to-day's event will be similarly smiled upon by the weather man, and ofcourse the sounds of to-day will be entirely different - high revving, superefficient units getting the absolute maximum from every litre, even if there isonly one! !

This event has of course seen many famous stars of the racing world, andit is interesting to note that many of these actually started their competitivecareer in motor sport by coming to Brighton, amongst them MalcolmCampbell, Prince Bira, Stirling Moss. and Mike Hawthorne. One remembersthe stirring sounds of the E.R.A.'s of Raymond Mays, and later Ken Whartonwith F.T.D. in the region of 23 seconds, which one can compare with theGeorge Brown course record of 19.29 seconds on his Vincent motor-cycle-or the 35.8 seconds of Cliff Earp driving his 100 h.p. Darracq in 1905.

• New timing apparatus will be used this year, competitors breaking lightbeams situated at the start and finish lines. Although two cars are runningsimultaneously, each car is timed individually.

TNE 'WARDSOur usual impressive array of awards has been swelled this year by the

presentation of two new trophies: Tommy Sopwith's Endeavour MotorCompany, the local Ford Distributors, have donated a trophy to be won bythe driver of the fastest Ford powered car, and Wills-the makers of Embassycigarettes-have obviously appreciated the merits of the B.W.R.D.C.--or, tobe more explicit, the British Women's Racing Drivers Club, a club formed topromote and protect the interests of feminine " dicers "-and they have

presented a cup for the winner of Class 10 to-day. Also on display at theprizegiving will be the .. Embassy Trophy" which is being competed for hythe members of the B.W.R.D.C. racing at various circuits throughout thecountry this season. Among our other trophies, the Moore of Brighton cup-an award going to the driver of the fastest Jaguar-Mrs. Pat Coundley h:ISwon this trophy for the past two years, but unfortunately will not be competingthis year; perhaps she feels that mere males should be given a chance to win !

A further Jaguar award is the Jaguar Drivers Club cup, to be won by ihefastest Jaguar car on a handicap basis; and for the M.G. drivers the Benntrophy will again be awarded.

May we hope that all visitors will enjoy their stay in Brighton, allspectators enjoy viewing, and the best of luck to the competitors. Perbapssome day we shall have sufficient cups to give everyone an award!

NISTfJllY fJl I. &. N.M.C.The early history of the Club is rather lost in the mists of pre-19J4. when

it was then the Brighton Motor Cycle Club. After the 1914-18 war. it \\."revived under the Secretaryship of C. Volk, son of the founder of Volk»Electric Railway. which still runs alongside the Speedway on Madeira Drive.

The Club was still more or less confined to Motor Cycles, and Hill Climb-,were held at Saddlescombe, 00 the Dyke Road, and Toad in the Hole (now "-housing estate), and various trials on local by-roads etc.; including ClappersLane. Fulk ing, which had then, a hazardous water-splash.

In 1921, with a new and keen Committee, the Club was reorganised ;;"drenamed the Brighton & Hove Motor Club.

The sea front Speed Trials were instigated, and tbe Club became affili;:'h:Jto the R.A.C. and A.C.U .. the Hon, Secretary being elected a member ot theCompetition Committee of the R.A.C. and member of tbe Council of theJ.C.C. (now the B.A.R.C.).

An annual event for members was held at Brooklands, the Brighton II'Beer 24 hour trial was instituted and was the first to use Fingle Bridge Hill.now used by M.C.C. and others.

The Club was asked to organise the .. Old Crocks" run from London h'Brighton, on behalf of a National Daily Paper, which it did successfully andto such good purpose that the R.A.c. decided to take over the following ycar. The Club also started the first serious Rally. finishing at Brighton; this," I,also taken over and has become the R.A.C. Rally.

THE CfJM'ETITfJRSAs befits our Jubilee year we have a fuU Jjst of entrants. 'Ihe Speed Trials

have always attracted a variety of vehicles and this year is no exception. GeorgeBrown the outright course record holder in a time of 19.29 sees. has once againentered. He tells us his bike is even faster this year. He is aJre Idy the holderof the world record for the standing start kilometre. Chris Summers, the carcourse record holder has entered his Lotus powered by a 5360 c.c. Chevroletengine, can be this year beat George Brown? Given a dry course it is boundto be a close thing and we confidently expect some new records to be set up.The Brighton & Hove Motor Club have decided to add a further £10 to theAwards list to be presented to the Competitor who puts up fastest time of daywhether car or motor cycle.

Ian Swift in Class 19 drives a Formula I Cooper with a Ford V8 engine andshould give Chris Summers healthy competition. This is the first appearance ofthis car at Brighton. Ken Wilson has once again btought along both his 2ilitre B.R.M. and a Lister Jaguar. He put up fastest time of the day in 1963.Bob King in a 2r litre Lotus will be out to prove that a Lotus is quicker than aB.R.M. One further interesting car in Class 19 is Jim Gavin's Deep Sanderson,This is powered by two highly tuned Mini Cooper engines driving all four wheels. It's acceleration is truly fantastic. Amongst the smaller racing cars GordonParker in his Cooper Climax will be out to defend his title of fastest time under2000 c.c. Strong opposition will come from Alben Rodgie in a Lotus and HarrySmith in a Cooper: whilst Miss Daphne Thompson will fiy the flag for the fairsex. In the up to 1000 c.c. Racing Car Class local garage proprietors BillHeathcote and Ray Dilley share the wheel of a Formula ill Merlyn.

The Classes for Vintage Cars contain many interesting cars. The MontaguMotor Museum have entered a 1907 14432 c.c. ltala driven by Lord Montaguhimself, whilst Stanley Sears drives a Rolls Royce of 1905 vintage. The historyof this car is quite lost but a car of this type certainly ran in our first event in1905. His son Jack Sears forsakes his Lotus Cortina and A.C. Cobras for a1914 Sunbeam. This car was a team car in the Tourist Trophy Race run in theIsle of Man in 1914. Class 14 contains no fewer than 28 Bentley's of all sbapesand sizes. Where do they all come from?

In the big Sports Racing Car Class the David Plumpstead Racing Teamentry, a Lotus Buick, must stand a good chance of winning tbe Forrest LycettTrophy.

Some most interesting cars are included in Class 9, apart from 11 Jaguars,3 Ferraris, and an Aston Martin. The entry includes two Sunbeam Tigers. Theone driven by Alan Brodie is the 1964 Le Mans car ..... Doc Merfields wellraced Cortina powered by an American Ford V8 engine-appearing at Brightonfor the first time, whilst local lad Tim Jones has managed to fit a similar enginentoa M.G.B.

Finally, we musn't forget the batch of Mini's in classes 2,3 and 7, wbich asusual will bring forth many close fougbt battles.
