Friday 13 April 12pm to 8 pm | Saturday 14 10am to 4pmBrighton Centre | Kings Road, Brighton
Welcome and Introduction from the Race Director
Dear Brighton and Hove resident,
It’s that time again! The third edition of the Brighton Marathon is almost upon us and we’re hoping once more, that you’ll come out and show the thousands of visiting runners - and their supporters – just what makes this Britain’s best city, bar none! Make a diary note to cheer on the thousands of runners on Sunday 15th April and help them get to the Finish - and to raise several million pounds for over 300 charities.
Of course we’re also hoping for another glorious sunny day, just as we’ve enjoyed for each of the last two years. For the 10,000+ runners who’ll gather in Preston Park for the 9am start, a bright, clear day – just not a hot day – is more welcome than rain. But either way, because around 75% of them are running for charity, the runners will be there, having trained for months for their big day. Please roar them on, and if you can’t roar ( ! ), then simply clap, or cheer, shout, scream, stamp your feet, blow a hooter, ring bells, get hold of a whistle, or just cry “Well Done!” and “Keep Going!”.
What is not in doubt is that it will be a BIG day; as Organisers, we know that entries have gone up and that this will be the biggest running event ever in Sussex! In fact, we’re pretty confident that the race will firmly establish itself as the UK’s No.2 Marathon in sizeafter London.
As for the race route, from Start to Finish, most things are much the same as the last two years because we’re firm believers in the old saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t’ fix it!”, so we’ve organised bands on the route, loads of drink stations for the runners, charity cheering points, crossing points for spectators, saturation medical cover (as a spectator of the Marathon, you’re probably nearer to a Doctor than you are for the rest of the year!) and overall, a great experience for our runners.
Otherwise, road closure timings are the same or almost identical to last year with the race remaining a “coastal race” after midday for all intents and purposes and we continue to stage the race to cause minimal disruption to the normal functioning of the city on a busy spring Sunday.
The success of our local football club “The Albion” is symptomatic of the city’s continued buoyancy and I’m delighted that Gus Poyet has agreed to be our Starter on race day, tobe at the Finish for the winner, and to hand out the Trophies in Madeira Drive.
While many things remain constant, others are moving on: the race route now takes in a slice of Portslade, our Grand Hotel Mini Mile Races on race morning, are much bigger than last year with nearly 2,000 kids entered, and our Expo this year is over two days at the Brighton Centre on Friday April 13th (12 noon to 8pm) & Saturday April 14th (10am to 6pm) where you can meet sports stars, take advantage of special offers, browse the dozens of stalls and even enjoy the one-off opportunity to secure a place in next year’s race before the entry system opens online.
See you on race weekend!
Best wishes
Tim Hutchings

Marathon Weekend
A key part of the Grounded Events plan for the Brighton Marathon is to develop the Brighton Marathon Weekend. We really want to see the city full of visitors across the weekend enjoying everything the city has to offer before setting off on their 26.2 mile challenge. The weekend really kicks off in style at the Brighton Centre on Friday 13th April.
Brighton Marathon Exhibition – Are You Ready?
After a fantastic first year The Brighton Marathon Exhibition has grown to two days, opening at midday on Friday 13th April. The Brighton Centre is host to our Running and Healthy Lifestyle show and will appeal to anyone interested in fitness, lifestyle & running by bringing an audience together under one roof. The Saucony Speaker Seminar promises to have some top names from the running industry and a great place to get advice and top class information. The FREE to enter Brighton Marathon Exhibition will extend the Marathon experience to residents and visitors alike and our aim is to encourage people of all ages, who are interested in sports, health and activity, to visit and enjoy a wonderful day out.
Mini Mile Races
Don’t forget that Race Day also has lots to offer the kids too. The Grand Hotel Mini Mile races are going to be the biggest ever with over 1500 children from the local area taking part in running the last mile of the marathon route. The Mini Mile races are incredibly inspiring so if you are planning on heading out to watch the Marathon runners, why not head out early to cheer the cities children on? www.brightonmarathon.co.uk/minimile
Entertainment Stages
Our entertainment stages were a huge success last year which is why for 2012 we are making them an even more important part of the day. There will be a large number of acts around the course playing a variety of music to keep the runners moving. Leaders Estate Agents once again are supporting the Stage at the bottom of Grand Avenue which will feature a number of live acts

Spectator TipsWhile our expected 10,000+ runners navigate their way around the 26.2 miles of Brighton and Hove’s streets you as a spectator will be an essential part of their running experience and their spirit will make your day and yours theirs!
Plan your day in advance
Look at our road closure times
Do not rely on using your car to get into the city.
Buses will be a far better option Plan well ahead if you are meeting runners or friends at the Start or in the city If you know a runner in the race, please do not arrange to meet near the Finish line. The Runner Repatriation Area (near Concorde II) east of the actual “Finish” will be a far better place to meet your runner Wear sensible shoes and appropriate clothes for the weather on the day. You may need to walk a lot due to the amount of visitors coming to the city Course marshals will be in place to aid the runners and to manage crowd control. They will also be available to provide information regarding road closures, Crossing Points and event information
Remember! Please help us to keep the city clean by taking your rubbish home or using the bins provided around Brighton and Hove.
Spectator Guidelines
Here is our advice for the third Brighton Marathon Please do not stand on the main road Please do not lean over barriers or onto the race route or impede the runners in any way Please do not try to cross the course whilst the race is in progress. We will have designated Crossing Points. Please do not cycle or run alongside the runners Please feel free to cheer and shout as loudly as you can Please try to respect the runners at all times on their big day – and remember, they may be very tired and slow to react to what is going on around them

Important Traffic Information for Race DayThe Brighton Marathon hopes to be a fantastic event for runners, residents, local commerce and retailers. After a very successful first year we have made two small changes to the route. Over the next two pages are some key points to help you plan your Sunday without disappointment.
Start Time: 9am in Preston Park.
Runners and spectators will start arriving from 7am
Preston Park: The Park will be used from Saturday April 14th until Sunday April 15h. Access to the park will be compromised from 6am until 10am on the Sunday - Race Day
Finish Time: 4pm on Madeira Drive, dependent on the last runner to finish. All roads around the city (apart from Madeira Drive) will be re-opened by 4pm. If runners are still on the course we will kindly ask them to move on to the pavement where necessary.
Madeira Drive: This is the location of the Finish area including marquees and the Finish line. This will be constructed from Saturday April 14th and in place until Sunday April 15th. There will be a partial closure of Madeira Drive during this period.
Changes to the course: The Marathon route turns from St James Street onto Lower Rock Gardens instead of going all the way through Kemp Town to Eaton Road. This allows access to Upper St James Street and St George’s Road all day.
The Route now includes a section of Boundary Road from New Church Road, south to Seaford Road.
Roads affected into Brighton from 7am until 11.30am
Roads affected into Brighton from 7.30am until 1.30pm

Uninterrupted Access
Other key areas of Brighton & Hove and how they are affected
Buses: Brighton and Hove Buses will be revising their timetable to work with the marathon and its runners.
Please visit www.buses.co.uk for further information.
St James Street: This is a major part of the marathon route and we hope that traders and residents alike embrace the atmosphere of thousands of runners using it as an essential and exciting part of the course. However traffic management of the area will commence from 6am with the road closed between 7.30am and until 11.30am on the day
Brighton Marina: Access to Brighton Marina can be made via Wilson Avenue at all times throughout the day. Access to the Marina from Rottingdean will be available from 1.30pm.

Disabled/wheelchair Spectator Access
Various areas of the Marathon course are wheelchair friendly and so we hope that this caters for anyone with a disability. In particular we would direct wheelchair users to Hove Lawns area which is flat and accessible, Hove Esplanade, Grand Avenue and certain areas of New Church Road. We anticipate that New Road, Jubilee Street and St James Street will be very busy and not recommended for wheelchair users unless they are happy to mingle through heavy crowds.
Crossing Points
Due to the design of the course we have designated Crossing
Points in the following areas:Aquarium RoundaboutOdeon CinemaRegency Square Car ParkBrunswick TerraceThird Avenue
Other key areas of Brighton & Hove and how they are affected Continued...
Tesco Hove: Tesco’s is open as normal. There is no access to the Car Park via Church Road. Access to and egress from the Car Park is via a purpose build entrance / exit which can be found on Haddington Road. Haddington Road is a turning off Blatchington Road, which runs parallel to Church Road. Please see advert on page 5 Churchill Square Car Parks: Access to Churchill Square can be made via the Hove exit from the A27 and then down Dyke Road and head towards Brighton Station and Queen’s Road. Both Churchill Square and the car parks are open as normal and additional staff will manually assist the access and egress.
King Alfred Leisure Centre: This will only be open to pedestrians on race day as the car park will not be accessible. Thank you to the staff who have been very supportive of our activity on the day. Carats Cafe Bar: Accessible by foot and an excellent viewing point to see the runners go by with a bacon buttie or mug of tea from Carats! Thanks to owner Chris Kraszewski again for his support.
Train Stations
Brighton and Hove Stations:
These will operate as normal but will be very busy due to the expected amount of visitors and runners.
The following stations will be busier than usual but services are not affected:
Parking Bay Suspensions
For runner and crowd safety there will be parking bay suspensions in order. Times and locations will be advertised and signage in place seven days before coming active.
The key areas affected are:
The first two Brighton Marathon’s was a huge success helping to raise over £3m each year for Local, National and International charities. This figure is set to rise again in 2012 with over 340 charities being involved sharing 6,000 charity places between them.
“I’m really proud of everything that we have achieved so far” said Race Director Tim Hutchings. “We have had a brilliant two years and we are delighted that our race works as a vehicle to help so many important charities raise a collectively significant sum of money. We are looking forward to building on that success this April.”
We are also proud to be supporting 8 Official Charity Partners in 2011, these include:
