OFFICIALS of the StateTransport Department claimedthat apart from inducing agrar-ian crisis in the state, thedrought took its toll on the saleand registration of vehicles too.

Explaining this equation, sources from the department

claimed that heavy financiallosses induced by the droughtprohibited farmers from pur-chasing vehicles like tractors, commercial and private vehi-cles, thus affecting the overallsale and registration of vehiclesin the state.

Transport Commissioner V N More said, “Sale of commer-cial vehicles, especially in ruralareas, have been hit by drought.Even the sale of motorcycles,

which is normally more in ruralareas, have come down.”

KING serious note of the ris-number of fatal accidents

    the Mumbai-Puneressway, the Maharashtra

te Road Developmentporation (MSRDC) recently shed installation of Brifene rope safety fence on a 2.5long stretch. If the experi-

nt proves successful, thensafety fence would be

alled at other locations asl. The fence was installed

ween the 73 km and 77 kmtch. While the installationk commenced last month,

oncluded last week. The decision to install thety fence was taken afterMarathi actors lost their

    expressway on December 24,2012.

Transport Expert SudhirBadami said, “It is good to seethat the MSRDC has startedinstalling safety wire ropes onthe expressway. Though these

ropes can’t rule out the possi-bility of an accident, they surely reduce the scale of fatal-ity.”

He said that if the experi-ment proves successful, thensuch fences should be installedat other locations on theexpressway as well, and high-

way police must fineover-speeding motorists to curbuntoward incidents on theexpressway.

Commenting on the instal-lation of the fence, anothertransport expert JitendraGupta said, “We will have to

wait and see how successfulthe experiment turns out to be.Only after having properresults, the decision to installthe fence at other locations on

the expressway should betaken. If installed on the entire95-km-stretch, without study-ing its efficacy, the fence would

be a sheer waste of publicmoney. Also, more reflectorsshould be installed at otherlocations on the expressway.”

Additional care Apart from installation of thesafety fence, the MSRDC decid-ed to construct anultra-modern truck terminuson the expressway where driv-ers can halt and take rest. It hasbeen observed that most acci-dents happen when drivers feelsleepy behind the wheel. TheMSRDC also decided to speedup the work of setting up atrauma centre, equipped with

an air ambulance facility, onthe Lonavala-Pune stretch of the expressway. In addition, signboards mentioning speedlimit and accident-prone areas

would also be installed alongthe expressway and awarenessabout slow driving on theexpressway would be impartedat toll plazas.
