PSLE T- Score Explained

• Reflects the relative achievement level of

pupils within the cohort

• Places pupils into different courses

according to their academic ability

• Enables posting to secondary schools by

merit and as far as possible into a school of

their choice

PSLE as a Placement Exam

• It is a sum of scores.

• It is the combined total of the Transformed

(T) scores for all the 4 subjects a pupil has

taken.

• The T-score for any subject is a score

obtained through a statistical calculation that

takes into account how well all the pupils

have done in the same subject in the

same year.

Total Aggregate Score

• The different subjects have different levels

of difficulty.

• The spread of marks from the average

mark, i.e. the standard deviation is also

different.

Why Not The Raw Score?

An Example :

A pupil scores 85% in both EL and MT.

His performance in MT is

very close to that of other

The T-Score converts the average mark of each

subject to a common score of 50 points.

How is T-Score calculated for each subject?

Where:

X: pupil’s mark for the subject

Y: average mark (mean) scored by all pupils

Z: spread of marks around the average mark

(standard deviation)

The PSLE T-Score

Example:

• Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0

• Average mark (Y) scored by

all pupils = 68.0

• Spread of marks (Z) around

the average mark (Y) = 14.0

T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68.0)

14.0 = 37.14

The PSLE T-Score

• The PSLE T-Score gives the relative position

of a pupil’s performance as compared to the

performance of all the other pupils in that

subject.

• The raw mark obtained in the exam only

shows how good the pupil is in that subject,

not how good he/she is as compared to

others.

The PSLE T-Score

• The Aggregate Score is obtained by

adding the T-Scores of the 4 subjects.

• All pupils are ranked according to their

Aggregate T-Scores.

and 1A to be ranked lower than

another pupil who has only 1A*

How is T-Score being affected by

Cohort performance ?

• The aggregate T-score goes up from 233 to 245 when the

average of all subjects went down by 10 marks each.

• This means that if a cohort is weaker, a pupil’s aggregate

T-score will increase even if he/she scores the same marks

for all the subjects.

• Based on the example, it is therefore not accurate

to compare a pupil’s aggregate T-score in a

particular year, to another pupil’s score in a

different year.

• Each year will have a different average and

standard deviation for all the subjects.

What is Direct School Admission

Exercise (DSA) ?

• The DSA Exercise was introduced by the MOE in 2004. It

seeks to promote holistic education and provide pupils an

opportunity to demonstrate a more diverse range of

achievements and talents in seeking admission to a

secondary school.

• It is an admission exercise to allow participating secondary

schools to select some P6 pupils for admission to

Secondary 1. The selection will be based on their

achievements and talents before the PSLE results are

released.

Considerations When Choosing

Secondary Schools

• Different types of secondary schools to choose from, each

with own programmes and schemes

• Consider strengths of schools and place child in an

environment that can motivate him/her and broaden his/her

horizons

• Academic performance/needs of the child

• Previous year’s posting aggregate ranges of the schools

• Distance from home
