Sureste Basin, Mexico Review of the Distribution of Reserves by Play
MSc Sergio Perez-Rodriguez August, 2015
To present a method to wisely display and compare the reserves by play of a basin
To present the results of the analysis of the relative comparison of the contribution to reserves by play
Objectives
Pareto Plot
Reserves by Play

Ranking position
The pareto plot shows that 4 out of 13 plays hold around 80% of the total reserves of the Sureste Basin.
The percentage change in the difference of reserves between the 4 major successive plays keeps around 30% for the three plays smaller than the major, and has a peak of 60% regarding the play with most reserves and the second to it.
Results
Around 30% of the total number of plays hold most of the total reserves of the Sureste Basin. For this figure of 4 plays to match the 20% of the total number of plays indicated by the Pareto Law, it would be required to establish 7 additional plays to the current total number of 13.
Just 1 play out of 4 is required to keep Around 80% of the
total number of plays holding most of the reserves . That’s the situation for the case reviewed here. However, the major play holds only 50% of the total amount of reserves of the 4 foremost plays.
Discussion
The Pareto Law indicates that in the near future it is likely that between 5 to 10 new plays will be identified and added to the current set of acknowledged plays in the Sureste Basin.
The Pareto Law suggest that the total reserves of the major play of the basin (Paleocene-Upper Cretaceous Carbonate Breccia Structural) could be underestimated, and that they could by as much as 30% higher than its current value.
