SDI- Pilot Campus

Background

A well-structured skill development plan will

enable productivity enhance competitiveness

and promote entrepreneurial activity in the

region and the country in general.

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Minister for

Petroleum & Natural Gas, Skill Development &

Entrepreneurship, Government of India, was

determined to translate the vision of ‘Skilled

India’ into reality by “scaling up and speeding

the Skill India Mission”; towards this goal; on 8th

January 2015, meeting chaired by the then

Hon’ble MoS(I/C), MoP&NG at New Delhi; it was

decided to set-up Model Skill Development Institute (SDI) at Bhubaneswar.

Again, it is under his dynamic leadership; MoP&NG has taken initiatives in 2016 to set up several

Skill Development Institutes in the oil sector for skill training of unemployed and under-privileged

youth.

Attending the Skill India call of Hon’ble Prime

Minister Shri Narendra Modi; IndianOil has

taken the lead in setting up the 1stSkill

Development Institute at the capital of Odisha

with support from other Public-Sector

Undertakings (PSUs) in the Oil & Gas Sector viz.

ONGC, GAIL, HPCL, BPCL, OIL, EIL and Balmer

Lawrie; with an objective to train the

unemployed and under privileged youth of

Odisha for enhancing their

employability/entrepreneurship, empowerment of youth by assisting on placements, encourage

start-ups and promoting the right skills appropriate to the industry& most important to helped

them to realize their true potential and get the opportunities they deserve.

Inauguration of Pilot Campus of SDI Bhubaneswar

It was decided to set-up the pilot campus at Oil

India site in Mancheswar Industrial area in

Bhubaneswar with the permission of IDCO & on

19th Oct 2015, SDI Bhubaneswar Registered as

a Society under the Society registration Act No.

XXI of 1860.

On the auspicious day of“ Akshaye Tritiya” on

9th May 2016, by Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble

Chief Minister of Odisha and Shri Dharmendra

Pradhan, the then Hon’ble Minister of State

(I/c), Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India inaugurated the 1st Skill Development

Institute in Hydrocarbon Sector in the Capital City of Odisha i.e. Skill Development Institute

(SDI) Bhubaneswar. While inaugurating the Pilot site, the then Hon’ble Minister of State (I/C)

MoP&NG, had announced the plans to set up a Mega Model Skill Academy for Skill Development in

Odisha.

Operations of Pilot Campus

On 30th June 2016, SDI Bhubaneswar

started operational in a 16,000 sq. ft.-

based state-of-art-campus with two skill

trades i.e. Industrial Electrician &

Industrial Welder with 84 students. As on

July’2018; SDI Bhubaneswar is

operational with Six regular trade courses

including life skills for all courses and one

bridge Upskilling course i.e. LPG Mechanic

(A bridge course of one week for the existing mechanics of LPG distributors of Oil PSUs in Odisha).

At a time, now there are around 150 students undergoing skill training. The course curriculum is

aligned with National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF)of Government of India and approved

by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). All these courses are affiliated to concerned

Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) and the students are assessed and certified through a rigorous testing

by a third party nominated by SSCs.

raining Methodology The training methodology at SDI Bhubaneswar

lays special emphasis on actual skill training in

the context of the application in real industry

environment. Thus, intensive training sessions

are conducted with focus on practical skills on

the latest simulators and equipment.

User-Focused Library

The SDI Library is a user-focused library that

integrates information sources and services across

disciplines under one umbrella by building a sound

and comprehensive collection of conventional

resources on all relevant branches of knowledge

with robust, hi-tech infrastructural facilities to

meet the myriad information needs of students,

research scholars and faculty members of the institute for promoting academic excellence. The

Library is also furnished with a good collection of books related to trade courses & life skills and

subscribes to select magazines and newspapers.

Hostel Hostels play a vital role in developing the intellectual, social & cultural facets

of a student’s life. The Hostels of SDI not only create a lively environment but

also provide the best of facilities for students to become successful, mature

and socially responsible individuals.

Well-furnished Computer Lab

The Computer Lab offers round-the-clock services

with uninterrupted power supply and the latest

infrastructure supporting best technology practices

and studies. It is equipped with 30 PCs, with 50Mbps

broadband connection. In addition, the Lab has the

standard peripheral equipment such as printers,

scanners and other devices.

Achievement / Success Story

SDI Champs dazzles in IndiaSkills 2018

Proud occasion for SDI Bhubaneswar, our students came up with flying

colors in the India Skills Competition 2018. SDI Students competed for two

sectors (Electrical Installation and Welding), for both the trades SDI

Trainees brought Gold Medal in India Skills East and in National our

Electrical Boy Shri Chakradhar Sahoo awarded with the silver medal.

The ultimate result of determination to be skilled -

Sri Ramesh Chandra Gope, the son of a Mason from

Ruputola village of Sundargarh District, could not able to

complete his higher secondary education as he fails to

pay the examination fees due to financial burden of

family; but obstacles could not stop his determination to

be skillful. He joined SDI, Bhubaneswar in Industrial

Welding and completed the skill course , thereby able to

represent Odisha in IndiaSkills 2018 at National level after emerging winner of State & Regional

level IndiaSkills 2018 competition as Best Skilled Welder. Though he could not emerge as winner

in National level, yet his participation in such a forum brought smiles in his face. His hard work,

willingness & passion has put him in a sustainable livelihood for his future prospects. When skills

and sympathy will arrive, the smiles will come back!!

by Skill India Mission is an exciting TV show

on Doordarshan National, highlights

initiative of SDI Bhubaneswar on skills,

creating career opportunities, producing

real life success stories, and promoting

entrepreneurship in their episode#97.

DD National specially covered the case of

Shri Sagar, who is the son of a poor vendor

located in Ganjam district of Odisha. SDI

Bhubaneswar helped in showing his right

career path in his life.

Skill became Identity - This proves in the case of an

ITI completed boy Sri Chakradhara Sahoo who is the

son of a farmer; belongs to Thakurpada village of

Khordha district. As a trainee of Industrial Electrician

skill course of SDI, he participated in the IndiaSkills

2018 competition in both State & Regional Levels and

became the winner in all stages. Being a winner of

Odisha state and then Regional IndiaSkills 2018 East,

he made his way to the National Competition of

IndiaSkills 2018 where he bagged the second spot by winning Silver Medal in his name and

brought laurels to SDI, Bhubaneswar and Odisha State. Now he wants to further excel his skill with

an aim to represent India in global events.

Now he became eligible for final competition with the Gold Medal winner to excel his skill and

achieve the first spot, where can represent India in WorldSkills 2019, scheduled to be held in

Kazan, Russia in 2019.

Entrepreneurs of SDI

Shri Khirasagar Swain came from an economically

poor family background. He is married and blessed

with a son. After completion of 10th class, he worked

with a power tiller mechanic as a helper. He joined

Industrial Welding program (a full time 6-month

residential curriculum) at SDI Bhubaneswar with a

hope of sharpen his trade skills. After completion of

the programme, Mr. Swain began his entrepreneurial

journey in the month of May 2017. SDI Bhubaneswar

supported this initiative launch through Shri

Dharmendra Pradhan Union Minister for MoP&NG

and MSDE. He is owner of M/s Dibyashu Fabrication,

a welding & fabrication workshop in his home town, Atabira in Bargarh District. He engaged two

supporting staff and his firm operating very well with good revenues.

Nirakar Muduli is from Kujanga, Jagatsinghpur, Odisha;

Nirakar lost his father at the age of 3 years living with

his mother who is an Anganwadi helper to earn

livelihood. He started his entrepreneurial journey with

the support of SDI Bhubaneswar.

Ripunjay Bidyadhar - a young boy of

Keunjhar District. Entrepreneurial bug hit

him quite a long time back. He realized his

dream of becoming an entrepreneur after

joining SDI Bhubaneswar. The training

methodology and ecosystem helped to

improve his skills in the trade to become an

entrepreneur. He has become an employer

too by offering jobs to two youths in his

locality.

Shri Rohit Kumar Sahu is also from Keunjhar

District. Prior to joining SDI, he was working as a

helper in one welding shop. Entrepreneurship

support of SDI helped him realize his dream of

owning a welding workshop. He invested his hard-

earned savings to establish the workshop. Today

he has recruited one helper and is a happy owner.

Success Speaks..

Pragati Pandit, Girl from Nayagarh, Graduate, joined SDI in

Computer Data Application Course; currently working with Karvy

Stock Broking Ltd, Bhubaneswar. After completion of graduation,

she could not get a decent job of her choice. She honed her skills

during her short term course at SDI.

Sasmita Sahoo successfully completed Computer Data Application

Course at SDI Bhubaneswar. Now working with M/s. Moongoose

India, Bhubaneswar. This Botany graduate satisfied about the

pedagogy and placement support of SDI.

Shri Gopabandhu Dora joined Industrial Electrician (6 months

course) after successful completion joined Leighton India with

starting salary of Rs. 15,000 /-Within a year impressed with his

performance the company now offering him a CTC of 3 lakh per

annum.

Similarly, the unemployed youth from Tribal Odisha; Mayurbhanj

District, Shri Biswajit Mohanta now too employed with Leighton

India raised from Mechanic to Supervisor drawing CTC of 3 lakh

per annum.

Ms. Subhalaxmi Mishra joined NTTF (Nettur Technical Training

Foundation) as Training Officer post completion of Computer

Data Application in SDI. Currently undergoing GET training with

NTTF. Ms Subhalaxmi is an Engineering Graduate with ambitious

in nature. Skill Training and guidance at SDI helped her to achieve

her goal.

Mrs Anusaya Swain from Nischintakoelii who inspired by

her father-in-law to join SDI in Computer Data Application

Course to lead an independent life. Anusaya, mother of

one kid came to SDI with lot of passion and enthusiasm,

successfully completed the course and now joined

Cooperative Bank of Salepur as an Accountant.

Shri Madhaba Maharana; 10th Pass unemployed;

belongs to Ganjam District; His father is taking care of

family of five with his humble earnings from farming. He

has undergone skill training in Industrial Welder (6-

month residential program) at SDI & now serving as a

skilled employee with L&T pipe line project with salary

of 16000/- per month. His hard work yields tangible

results and extended a helping hand to his father.

To create his own identity, an ITI holder name Shri

Simanchal Panigrahi belongs to Cuttack district,

joined SDI in Industrial Electrician. After completion

his skill training, he got selected in M/s Medha Servo

through SDI campus drive as a Trainee. His fortitude

towards his career & continuous guidance of SDI, made

him eligible to grasp a position in Delhi Metro Rail

Corporation, a joint venture of GoI & GoD as an

Electronic Mechanic. Now, he is leading towards a

better livelihood.
