About Pratham

Pratham is the largest non-governmental educational organization in India. Pratham provides quality education at scale to ensure that India’s children have a better future. Pratham works with schools, families, communities, villages, volunteers and governments wherever possible.

Scale and Assessment

Of India’s 210 million children, almost half are unable to read. Each year, 25 million children are born, with 10 million projected to be illiterate. To have real impact on education in India, both scale and constant assessment are needed.

Key Programs

Read India - Pratham’s flagship program, Read India, helps to improve the reading, writing and basic arithmetic skills of 12.2 million children in the age group of 6-14 years.

Urban Learning Centers – In 42 cities, ULCs identify out-of-school children and seeks to enroll them in the local municipal school while simultaneously enrolling them in their neighborhood Pratham Urban Learning Center.

Direct Programs - Conducted in people’s houses, churches, temples, open spaces etc. The instructors, mainly women, belong to same community where the program is being conducted. Direct Programs include preschools, libraries, learning support, English and scholarship classes reaching over 667,000 children.

PCVC - Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children has been working since 2001 with vulnerable and working children to help them receive basic education and live a better life. PCVC has been able to reach 44,000 in 8 states in 2010.

Computer Aided Literacy – The goal of CAL is to expose children from disadvantaged backgrounds to the world of information technology. This year, it has reached over 90,000 children across 7 states.

Vocational Skills Program - This program is targeted at the economically disadvantaged youth in the 18-30 year age group, training them with relevant skills in banking, agriculture, hospitality, etc.

ECCE – Operating in 7 centers in 4 cities, Early Childhood Care and Education Centre trainings are conducted for government and private pre-school teachers, teaching them techniques in early child care. .

Pratham Books - Pratham Books was set up in 2004, as part of the Read India movement, a nation-wide campaign to promote reading among children. Pratham Books has published 200 original titles in 11 Indian languages and reached over 12 million children.

ASER – Surveying and evaluating 700,000 children annually, ASER measures the enrollment as well as the reading and arithmetic levels of children in the age group of 6-14 years in 564 districts.

Skoll Entrepreneurship Award 2011Through extensive screening, awarded only to social entrepreneurs who have achieved significant impact in tackling the world’s most challenging problems. It carries with it an award of $1.2 million over three years.

Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership 2010Claremont McKenna College (CMC) announced Pratham, India's largest educational nonprofit organization, as the recipient of the fifth annual Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership with a $250,000 award.

EMPI-Indian Express Innovation Award for Read India - 2010The EMPI Group of Institutions instituted the Indian Innovation Awards in 2005 as part of a larger movement entitled “Mission Innovative India” started by former President A P J Abdul Kalam

Winner of CNN – IBN Indian of the Year - 2010 Pratham was selected as the winner of the prestigious CNN-IBN Indian of the Year award in the public

service category for its contributions in the field of literacy and education.

MIT's Poverty Action Lab designates Pratham as a "must-buy"-2009 Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Poverty Action Lab has designated Pratham as one of seven "must

buys" to reach the Millennium Development Goals. The must-buys programs were chosen for being highly effective at achieving specific development goals at a relatively low price

Meet Deepa

Deepa Thappa, Primary School Chakarpur Deepa is currently in grade two. Her sister, who is six years old, attends school along with her. In her spare time, Deepa enjoys watching her favorite show Tom and Jerry. Her favorite subjects include Hindi, English and math. She dreams to become a teacher one day, so that she can help young children in her village, read and write.


Meet Rajesh

Rajesh Singh, Primary School Nathupur Rajesh Singh is in grade 5 and cycles to school every day, which takes him about one hour. Since his mother doesn’t keep very well, he attends school during the day and helps his brother Arjun with his machine repair shop in the evenings. The family survives on whatever comes from the repair shop. Rajesh struggles to get up early in the morning and study before he leaves for school. His ambition is to become an engineer one day.


You Can Create an Impact

$25,000 will transform 100 villages – training 200 teachers in digital literacy to teach 2000 children reading, writing and math for an entire year.

$15,000 will focus on 2000 children for an entire year in 100 villages, getting them into school if they are not, and supporting children falling behind.

$3,000 - $5,000 will keep 150 children in school for an entire year through an urban learning center, increasing retention, learning and the the quality of instruction.

$1,000 will fund the survey of 1400 children, to assess their current reading and writing level for one year.
