Foreword

In response to letter no. 1/7/DIP/2015/MSME-DI dated 20/05/2016 of O/o

DC (MSME), M/o MSME, Govt. of India. The District Industrial Profile of

Barwani for the year 2015-16 has been updated upto 31/03/2016 by this

office. This profile contained Geography, Topography, Mineral availability,

forest resources, District general information, Industrial scenario &

potentiality of MSME of the district.

District Barwani was formed on 25th May 1998. It was carved out of West-

Nimar, Khargone district. Barwani is situated on the south-west side of

Madhya Pradesh as well as Holy River Narmada is its northern border.

District is surrounded by Saturday (in South) and Vindhyachal (in North)

forest ranges.

While preparing the profile, the data was collected from various departments

of Madhya Pradesh Government and from internet. I take this opportunity to

appreciate the efforts of Shri V.M. Kshire, Asstt. Director (PI), Shri B.

Gahan, Asstt. Director (EI) in bringing out this industrial profile of Barwani

for the year 2015-16.

Brief Industrial Profile of Barwani District 1. General Characteristics of the District

District Barwani was formed on 25th May 1998. It was carved out of West-

Nimar, Khargone district. Barwani is situated on the south-west side of Madhya

Pradesh as well as holy river Narmada is its northern border. District is

surrounded by Satpuda (in South) and Vindhyachal (in North) forest ranges.

The name Badwani originated from the forests of Bad which had surrounded the

city in old times. Wani is the old word for the Garden. and hence city got its

name Badwani which means Garden of Bads. Barwani is still pronounced as

Badwani but it spells Barwani

Town Barwani was the capital of old Barwani State before 1948. This small

State was spared by British, Mughals and Marathas because of its rocky terrain

and less productive soil. The Rana dynasty ruled the state throught the history.

The history of this dynasty goes back to 13th century.

Before Independence Barwani was known as 'The Paris of Nimar'

1.1 Location & Geographical Area.

District is situated between Latitudes 21°37' to 22°22' North and Longitudes

74°27' to 75°30' East. State of Maharashtra in South, Gujarat in far West,

district Khargone on the East and district Dhar on the North from boundaries of

Barwani. District is triangular in shape with the highest point in West.

The town Barwani is situated near the left bank of the Narmada River.

There are two forest Division in the District i.e. Barwani & Sendhwa

1.4 Administrative set up.

Barwani city is the District headquarter of Madhyapradesh . For administrative

purpose the district has been divided into 04 Sub Divisions, 9 Tehsils, and 7

Panchayat Samities. There are 416 Gram Panchayats, 576 Revenue Villages in

this District.
