2011 ANNUAL REPORTJanuary 1, 2011–December 31, 2011

GREETINGS:

With great pleasure,we present the USS Hornet Museumannual report for CalendarYear 2011. Just as theUSS Hornet (CV-12) weathered a number of battleswhile in service to our nation, so has the Museum faceda number of challenges in its 13-year history.Despiteour relatively inaccessible location and the ongoingnationwide recession, the Hornet continued its Heritageof Excellence in serving the citizens of, and visitors to,the Bay Area. This annual report highlights our successin meeting the challenges of CY2011, thanks to our dedi-cated staff, supportive volunteers, and wonderful donors.

The Hornet is now in a position of relative financialstrength, with CY2011 having been one of the strongestrevenue-generating years in recent history. This allowsus to stay on course as a premiere venue for youtheducational activities as well as family-orientedcommunity and private events. We will continue toprudently manage both the income and expensestreams in the future to ensure continued growth.

One source of the Hornet’s annual pride is in the areaof ship restoration. The highly-decorated,WWII aircraftcarrier is our primary artifact. In CY2011 alone, werestored and opened 13 additional spaces for publictouring. This was the result of the efforts of the staff, along with numerous volunteers and financial supporters, who provided selfless support to this historic nationaltreasure. For that,we remain grateful.

Sincerely,

Randall RamianChief Executive Officer

The USS Hornet Museum, a State and NationalHistoric Landmark, is berthed at Pier 3 on the formernaval air station in Alameda. Her active duty yearsspanned the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s. She was a keyparticipant in Word War II, the Vietnam War, the ColdWar, and the recovery of the first two lunar landingspace missions. She was stored in a naval mothballfleet from 1970–1995.

When opened in 1998, the Hornet was the onlysea, air and space museum on the West Coast. The Museum is a great resource for local andinternational visitors and is open seven days aweek—closed only for Thanksgiving, Christmasand New Year’s days.

More than 62,000 people visited the Hornet duringthe 2011 calendar year. This number includes allgeneral admission visitors, members, and guests forpublic and private events.

Some of our most popular youth actitivites includethe educational “STEM to Stern” tour, the overnightLive-Aboard program for organized youth groups, and our history-themed Living Ship Days. Otherfamily-friendly events include all the major patrioticholidays such the Fourth of July celebration, andspecial events like our Halloween Monster Bash, and big band dances.

Like many non-profit organiza-tions in 2011, the Hornet facedsignificant financial challengesin maintaining a quality levelof daily operations with limitedfunding and reduced personnelresources. Our staff respondedvery professionally, providinga valuable community servicewhile ensuring a positive cashflow situation.

At the end of the year, we hadbalanced our budget, generateda net increase in assets, securednew sources of income andfunded a contingency accountto cover unanticipated futurefinancial requirements.

For the twelve months of 2011,the Museum’s revenues totaled$2,435,201 while expenseswere held to $2,158,768,generating a net increase inassets of $276,433. Please referto the accompanying pie chartsto view the allocation of theserevenues and expenses.

The Museum is now a lean-but-profitable organization. We are positioned for growthacross our existing revenuegenerating departments, byenhancing our Live-Aboardexperience, attracting moreprivate and community events, developing more exhibitsto keep visitor interest high, expanding our public relationsand marketing efforts, whilemeeting the demands ofmain-taining the ship itself. We also plan to significantlyexpand our long-term fund-raising efforts next year.

RESTORATIONShip RestorationThe guiding vision for our restoration activity is topreserve the aircraft carrier in the same conditionas when she was decommissioned in 1970.Wewant our visitors to understand the living andworking conditions that sailors experienced whileaboard ship.

Following a methodical plan, space by space, compartment by compartment, volunteer crewstirelessly restore Hornet back to her in-servicecondition. From the Bridge, to the Officers’Wardroom, to Sick Bay, to the Engine Room, ReadyRooms, Hangar Bay, Galley and Mess Deck, BerthingSpaces, the aircraft carrier welcomes guests aboarddaily to share in a bit of history from a past era.

Each project starts by researching hundreds ofphotos provided in cruise books and by formercrew members. After establishing exactly how aparticular space should look, the physical processof restoration begins. From matching the correctpaint color to the stenciling of the piping, ductwork, and electrical cabling, nothing is overlooked.

In 2011, we proudly opened to the public thefollowing new and/or expanded spaces:

• Main Ship’s Laundry

• Officers’ Barber Shop

• Arresting Gear Room

• Ship Services—Cobbler Shop,Tailor Shop, andSports Equipment Locker

• No. 2 Boiler Room

• 07 Level Gun Director Control Room

• Forward Sonar

• Flag Bridge

• Enlisted Mess Deck Scullery

• 442nd Exhibition Spaces expanded

• Anti-Submarine Warfare Exhibit

• Doolittle Raid Exhibit

Most of the restored spaces reflect elements from acombination of all three decades that Hornet servedAmerica. Detail and historical accuracy are theessence of all restoration work.

The biggest compliment our volunteers can receiveis from a former Hornet crew member comingaboard with his family and seeing the look on hisface—for a brief instant, he is back home on hisship, just as he left her.

COLLECTIONS/ACQUISITIONSThanks to the generosity of many individuals, thematerial collection of the USS Hornet Museumcontinued to grow during the course of 2011. It iswith many thanks that we recognize these people:

EXHIBITSThree highlightexhibits were openedin 2011.The MarsRover exhibit (featuringa replica spacecrafton loan from NASA),was onboard for sixmonths. To commemo-rate the Centennial ofNaval Aviation, theMuseum created adisplay that depicts the first landing/takeoff sequenceof an aircraft on a Navy ship, which occurred on theSan Francisco Bay.To honor the most famous U.S.aircraft carrier raid of WWII, the Museum opened aDoolittle Raid exhibit.

“Hangar Bay Life” also opened in Hangar Bay One.This smaller exhibit, consisting of photographstaken during the course of the USS Hornet’s service, shows the hangar bay as a place of crew recreationas well as serious military functionality.

Aircraft RestorationOf course, an aircraft carrier is not completewithout aircraft aboard. The Museum’s Air Groupexhibits are comprised of 14 aircraft and two aircraftnose cockpits mounted on trailers, including:

TBM-3 Avenger SH-3 Sea KingFM-2 Wildcat HUP-1 RetrieverFJ-2 Fury T-28 TrojanH-34D Seahorse US-2B TrackerF8U-1 Crusader SH-2H Sea SpriteTA-4J Skyhawk F-4S PhantomS-3B Viking F-14A Tomcat

The two trailer-mounted cockpits are the F8UCrusader known as “Clementine” and the F-11 Tigeraffectionately called “FiFi,” both of which seeplenty of action in parades and community eventsthroughout the year.

The continued restoration and upkeep of aircraftremains an ongoing challenge for the Museum.Specific parts and materials are extremely hardto find and expensive. However, the skills andcraftsmanship displayed by our crews is phenomenal. These crews are comprised of retired military, private and commercial aviation aficionados, andthose who have the interest and desire to learn.Visitors will see the Air Group’s banner in therestoration area stating their goal:

EDUCATIONPrograms, School Groups & ToursThe Museum’s Education Department had a verysuccessful year, as reservations for our specializedtours and overnights increased. Several newprograms were launched, and the Museum’shistorical lecture series, Living Ship Day, fell underthe directorship of the Education Department. This was the most successful year to date for theLiving Ship Day program, as interest in these eventsincreased Museum attendance.

Our education programs offer unique chances forstudents to experience science and history firsthand.Whether it is by taking students on a basic docent-led tour or participating in one of the educationallabs, our programs enhance a student’s appreciationof U.S. history and STEM (science, technology, engi-neering, and math). They offer what no text bookcan—a tactile experience which captures the valueof American history and early naval technology.

Our “STEM to Stern” and “Step into History”programsare all based on California State EducationalStandards. All of these programs are equipped withartifacts, multi-media presentations, and historicalfootage to sharpen the learning experience.

The “STEM to Stern Jr.” program, a new scienceprogram geared towards elementary schools, isdesigned to explore the relationship between theship’s operation and Earth science. Our labs arebased on California 4th and 5th grade standardsand explore the wonders of electricity, magnetism, weather, and aviation. By exploring the operational

functions of a WWII aircraft carrier, the realms ofelectricity and weather come alive!

Currently, the Museum offers six different programsserving all age & grade levels to local educators. The name of each program, the audience it serves, and a brief content description are listed below:

“Field Trip at Sea” Grades K-12Basic docent-led day tour highlights Hornet’shistory and Apollo missions.

“Step into History” Grades 8-12Learn 20th Century U.S. history while visiting fivedifferent stations onboard during this day tour.

“STEM to Stern” Grades 8-12Apply math and science to the daily operations ofan aircraft carrier during this day tour.

“STEM to Stern Jr.” Grades 2-5Fieldtrips are enhanced with a one-hour hands-onearth science lab during this day program.

“Passport to History” Youth Overnight Grades K-5Students have a rare and unique opportunity tofollow in the “footsteps of Hornet’s sailors.”

Live-Aboard ProgramThe overnight Live-Aboard program provides anexciting opportunity for guests to “step into history”and envision a day in the life of the crewmen whoserved our nation so gallantly. Guests enjoy bothdinner and breakfast in the original crew's mess hall, and partake in various optional tours throughoutthe ship. They also participate in the telling of ghost

stories in the Fo'c'sle, sleep overnight on bunks inthe crew berthing compartments, and take a ridein the flight simulator.

Additionally, scouts can earn merit badges in avia-tion, radio or space exploation during their stay. All guests are encouraged to participate in normalMuseum daytime activities as well. This highlypopular program is run by a core of dedicatedindividuals, some of whom served aboard the aircraftcarrier while she was in service.Their experienceand enthusiasm bring the ship to life for each guest.

Since its inception, the Live-Aboard program hashosted over 100,000 overnight visitors, with roughly8,100 guests in 2011. Many organized youth groups, such as YMCAs and churches, take advantage of thisunique learning opportunity, and Boy and Girl Scoutsorganizations have made our overnight experience aperennial favorite for more than a decade.

For many years, hundreds of California Sea Scoutsand their families have descended on the Hornetover the Memorial Day weekend. During their three-day Ancient Mariner Regatta, these youngstersdemonstrate a knowledge of various sea-faring skills.

In 2011, we also hosted special overnight encamp-ments for families and adult groups. In one case, designers from a popular video game companyfound inspiration for their military game designswhile enjoying a night aboard. The Museum alsowelcomed aboard guests from the Bay Area Chapterof an Ivy League university’s alumni association, coordinating with the Events department for amemorable experience.

The Live-Aboard program is an educational experi-ence like no other. Its popularity can be summed upby the huge number of repeat visitors who returnwith friends and family to experience the fun allover again.

EVENTSFor many years, the Events Department has overseenand encompassed all aspects of every event occur-ring at the USS Hornet Museum. This extensive listincludes functions such as private/corporate partiesand meetings and filming. In addition, communityevents such as our Fourth of July celebration, swingdances, Halloween Monster Bash, and our annualNew Year’s Eve Gala (all fundraisers for the Museum)are hosted by this department, which also handleschildren’s birthday parties and more. Based on thedepartment’s successes and increased demandduring the fiscal year of 2011, the department wasseparated into two units: Hornet Community Eventsand Private Event Sales.

Hornet Community EventsThere were many exciting Museum-sponsoredcommunity events throughout the year. The summerseason was kicked off with a well-attended big banddance featuring “The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra” andfollowed by our popularFourth of July celebration.More than 1,700 gueststoured the historic ship, listened or danced to one ofthe many bands, and playedinteractive games.Theseincluded bounce houses forchildren, robo surfing, andair hockey tables. The daywas capped with views ofseveral fireworks showsthroughout the Bay Areafrom the flight deck.

Our Halloween Monster Bash dance and costumeevent was also a great success enjoyed by roughly1,000 children and adults. The Museum provideda special children’s area for families with youngchildren to enjoy. Tours of the Haunted Hospitalwere ongoing throughout the night while partymusic was provided by the Cocktail Monkeys.

Our New Year’s Eve gala is legendary throughoutthe Bay Area and the 2011 edition was no exception.Once again, 3 O’Clock Jump performed classics fromthe Big Band era, Rhumba, Cha Cha,Waltz, and Swingfavorites. Roughly 1,300 attendees danced the nightaway amongst vintage aircraft on the hangar deck.At midnight, guests went up to the flight deck toview the San Francisco skyline lit up with fireworks. The Silent Auction was a huge success. Many guestscommented about how magical the New Year’s Evegala events were.

Private Event SalesImmediately after its formation in March 2011,the Private Event Sales Department began capturingbusiness. Film location shoots were bookedfor a regional commercial featuring an awesomehelicopter shot. More artistically, Paul ThomasAnderson (writer/director of “Boogie Nights” and“Magnolia”) filmed scenes for his latest endeavor,

“The Master.”This film is based upon the life of L.Ron Hubbard and stars Joaquin Phoenix and PhillipSeymour Hoffman. Filming took place in the ship’sTorpedo Magazine and Enterprise Berthing areas, anda stuntman jumped off the Flight Deck.

The Museum greatly benefited this year by obtainingnew clients through strategic marketing and businessdevelopment efforts, as well as new pricing categoriesto attract more corporate clients. These new clientsincluded well-known companies such as Plantronics,Google,Wells Fargo Bank, and the Travel Channel. Bythe end of 2011, the Hornet was rapidly becomingthe new“go to” site among Bay Area venues for largecorporate gatherings and authentic film locations.

PUBLIC RELATIONSIn 2011, the USS Hornet Museum made significantstrides in its public relations efforts. The organizationjoined forces with De Alba Communications toenhance our reach throughout the Bay Areacommunity and northern California. With theiraggressive assistance, more people have becomeaware of our various community events andeducational programs, such as Live-Aboard, LivingShip Day, and national holiday commemorations.

Another major initiative undertaken with De Alba’sefforts and expertise, is reaching out to a morediverse audience. We have noticed a significantincrease in general admissions from outsidethe normal Hornet affinity groups, and are nowattracting visitors from a variety of ethnic andinternational communities.
