Bridgewater’s Best Idea

Townspeople seem quite excited about Bridgewater’s Best Idea, and as a staff, we are excited too. You have probably read about BBI. It is an ARPA program borne of our notion that government doesn’t have a monopoly on good ideas. (I’ll pause while you insert your own sarcastic remark.) Council has appropriated $250,000 of the Town’s American-Rescue-Plan funds toward implementing the best idea for a new or expanded business.

We received 16 submissions, and the staff is evaluating them now. I might classify some of them as “tasty” (although no one had the good sense to submit edible goodies for evaluation). Others are educational, attractive, or fun. And a couple would provide services very much needed by our residents.

Our internal evaluation process is simple. First, we determine whether the idea is eligible for ARPA funding. ARPA is fairly restrictive, but we know the regulations well enough to make the best case for each idea. After ideas clear the ARPA threshold, we judge them on three scales: feasibility, readiness, and benefit to townspeople, with the scoring weighted toward “benefit.” We will present the three highest-scoring applicants to a special panel comprised of Council and IDA members. And then, on November 18, the panel will meet to select the winner of the quarter-million-dollar prize. This November 18 meeting will be open to the public and will resemble the Shark Tank television show (without infringing on their trademark, of course). This “ARP Tank” meeting will include presentations by the finalists and questioning by the panelists. The cash will be dispensed under instructions from the Town Attorney to ensure that it is spent on the designated purpose.

November’s Current will identify the finalists. Be sure to check it out and attend the ARP Tank at Sipe Center on November 18! Then you can judge for yourself whether government has all the good ideas.
