    APRIL-AUGUST, 1984 NO. 2

Ju ne b eg an with a visit from

    Dean

    Hickerson, a

    former missionary to

    Germany

    now working

    as

    a

    cam

    pus

minister in Missouri, He was able to

    spend

    two Sun

    days

    here. During this time he

    helped

    in preaching,

    calling,

    and

preparation for the upcoming vacation bi

ble school. We appreciated Dean not only for his will

    ingness to be

    used

in various ways, but also for his

    knowledge

    and

    abilities. He

    seemed

    to

    have

    fitted in

    well with

    the type

    of work here.

    Vacation

    bible school

    wa s t he

    last

    week

    of

    June. This

year we ran into some problems. First, when we asked

permission to hang flyers announcing the program, we

    were

    refused.

Second , t he announcemen t which was

    to

appear in the local paper ran late. Instead of two or

    three

    weeks

    prior, it

    appeared

    the

    weekends

    we

    were

    to begin

    and

end. Third, just prior to the VBS, the direc

    tor, Paul Toothman,

    was

    informed that he

    was

    being

    transferred

    to

    th e

    Frankfurt area . This meant

    that

    he

    would be tied up with

    movers during

    the

    program-

In spite of all these, the Lord blessed us.

    Our

    atten

    dance

    averaged

    forty children. Most of

    t he se had

    no

    church

    background of any kind. When

    asked

    to bring a

bible, some did not have any. Others brought their

    large family bible.

    This year, it

    was decided

that we would write our own

    lesson material. The

    theme

    of

th e VBS was W ho

    is

    Jesus? It

    covered

    his bir th; baptism an d temptation;

    miracles:

death, burial and resurrection; an d following

    Jesus. We

    had enough

teachers this year for the four

    age groups. There were

    enough

    volunteers, also. Janet

Aldrich came all th e way from Indianapolis,

    Indiana

    to

help us (She may not have known that when sh e

originally planned to come as she was visiting her

sister, Susan Spencer, for the summer, I appreciated

her willingness to help us ) I know that the children

    learned from

    this

    VBS

    because

    on th e

    last

    Sunday du r

ing the sermon i said who is this Jesus?

    and

    one of the

    boys called ou t -- God's Son

    Several

    have

    continued coming

as a result of VBS. i

    will

    take

    th e bu s to ge t

    them

    on Sunday morning only to

find some walking down the hillfrom where they live.A

few times they have come at 9-9;15 (Sunday school

begins at 10). When Iask why they

    came

    so early, they

reply we thought you weren't coming for us. Itis good

to se e the eagerness of young children

    CAMP

July is the time of our

    summer camp.

    This year it

    was

    moved from Moiveno to

    Camp

    San Francesco,

    about

one hour along the coast north east of Venice. The

    theme

    of the camp

    was

    Doing God s

    Will

    I taught two

    classes.

    One

    was the

    gospel

    of Luke, the other, the

    book

    of Romans. The

    camp

    was small with 48 people

    attending.

    Susan Spencer and

    her two children, Lanny

    and Sarah attended

    from Landstuhl

    (her husband.

    L.V.,

    had

    a school he

    was

    attending during this time). Also,

Janet Aldrich was able to go with us. Several came

from the United States. One group from Ozark Bible

    College attended

    and

    helped with the children's

classes. A couple came from New Mexico. Inall, itwas

a good time for teaching, sharing, and

    encouragement.

    LONDON

Iwent to London August 3-5 for a preaching rallywith

    Fred Miller.

    Donald Hun t from

    Ottumwa,

    Iowa and

    David Arrowsmith from Coventry,

    England were also

    on

    the program. There

    were

    nine sessions with the

average attendance around 40 people. 1appreciated

the opportunity of going for several reasons. First, was

    to help

    encourage

the people there. Second. Iwas able

    to see th e

    work

    first hand. I

    s aw the

    cultures with which

Fred works, the people who work in these cir

    cumstances,

    and th e conditions under

    which

    this work

    is carr ied.

    While

1was in London, I was ab le to see some of th e

sights. At the British Museum, I saw the Sinaiticus

    and

    Alexandrinus

    manuscripts

    which are from the 4th

    an d

5th century A.D. I also saw there the Roset ta stone. It

was by means of this stone that Egyptian hieroglyphics

    were understood. I

    saw

    carvings from Nineval. statues

    from Athens and

    Greece,

    and mummies and idols from

Egypt. Naturally, when a person goes to London, he

    London (where many

    people

    lost their

    head,

    literally).

    We had to go

    underground and

    through a three foot

solid steel door to view them in the vault. Idid. They are

    impressive, over

    3700 diamonds

    some

    of the

    other things

    which I

    saw

    were

Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminister

    Abbey, Big Ben, punkers ,

    and

    demonstrations. In all,

quite an interesting trip. Itfeels so

    good

    to be home , I'm

    glad I went.

    NEWS

We are always sorry to se e people leave. This

    past

    June,

    both the

    Gary Goble and

    the Paul

    Toothman

    families left. Gary

    was

    our pianist for the

    past

    5

    years.

    His wife

    Theresa

    helped in t eaching a

    Sunday

    school

class and junior church worship. Gary got out of the

    ser

    vice

    and

is now working with a computer

    company

    in

    Heidelberg . Paul was our

    Sunday

    school superinten

    dent. He an d Donna

    along

    with their children helped to

    build the youth

    group.

    It

    seems

    like

    they

    were always

    bringing kids with them. Both

    will

    be

    greatly missed.

In August Diane Miller left to beg in working with

    people

from Pioneer Bible Translators in Papua, New

    Guinea. She was

    here for

    about

    5 years working

    as

church secretary, children's education director, and

    missionary.

    She will

    be greatly missed.

    A new family that

    has

    come

    is the Richard Baldwins.

    They

    are

    from

    Georgia

    (most recently). They did not

    know

    about

    the

    church

prior to coming. As they were

    driving

    down

    the road, they

    came

    across

    the sign out

    front. We

    ar e s o

    glad

    they

    did

    Many many

    thanks

to those of you who contr ibuted

    towards the

    purchase

    of our new

    copy

    machine.

1:24-2:5). He labored so people might be encouraged

and strengthened 'in the understanding of God's

mystery - Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures

    of wisdom

    and

    knowledge . Yet, 2 Cor. 11:23-33 does

not give us an image of a lifewe would like to imitate.

    Bu t

    Paul was a

    minister

    A servant

    His

    life's work was to

bring the good news to the gentile people no matter

what it cost. (For those who may not know, the Colos-

    sian

letter was written while Paul was a

    prisoner

    in

    Rome on

    account

of his peaching to the gent iles.) He

wanted every man to be complete in Christ.

What would cause a ma n to

    struggle

    so long and

hard for Chr is t? We

    begin

    to understand

    what

    drove

    Paul when we

    see

    what captivated his thoughts. Jesus

    Christ

    ha d

done what no one or nothing else could. I

can well imagine that Paul loved to dwell on the things

    of

    Christ

    in whom

    are

    all

    th e

    treasures of wisdom

    and

knowledge . He saw the King in his beauty Thus, he

was happy to suffer so that the gentiles might have this

great gospel. But Paul also had a prayer that they might

be encouraged through love and u y assured ofChrist

so that they may not be deceived by persuasive

arguments. He pointed their thoughts beyond this

w or ld t o where Christ is.

A story is told of Walter Scott, who began life as a

teacher. He was appointed as an evangelist for an

organization. In his first sermon, he preached very

    powerfully. At the invitation, no

    one

    came

    forward. His

    second

    sermon

    was

    also

    powerful, but again, no one

responded. In his third attempt, he was toward the

    end

    of

the serm on when he noticed

    a

    man walk

    into

    th e

    assembly. He concluded

    the

    sermon

    and

    offered the in

    vitation. This

    man cam

    forward, accepted Christ, and

    was

    baptized.

    Later,

    Scott

    wrote to

    t he man

    to find out

    why he had come forward

    when

    he had heard only a

few minutes of the sermon? The man responded

    that

    he

    had began reading his bible

    and saw

    that he needed to

    believe,

    repent, and

    be

    immersed

    into Christ. He

    then

    determined

    that

    if

    he

    ever heard anyone preach what

he found in th e bible (and that alone) then he would go

    to that man

    and

    be baptized.

    Then

    Mr.Scott

    discovered

    the

    greatness

of the gospe l. If he

    had

    thought that the

    man

    had

    come

    because of the

    power

    of his

    preaching,

his pride would have swelled so that he would have

    thought he

    was

something. The power, however, was in

th e gospel Yet. at th e en d of Scott 's first year, over

    1000

    people

    accepted Christ, it

    was

    said by A. Camp

bell at Scott's death , 'hi s whole heart was in th e work.

What is a minister? He is a servant. O ne man s ai d that

his living was hardware, but Christ was his life. There

are many servan ts who may never ent er a pulpit, but

there a re n on e wh o will not do what hi s mas t er a sk s.

    BAPTISMS

    Michael Hi ll erb rand

    wa s imme rs ed

    out into Christ

September 16,1984. Now, this happened as a result of

Sigrid Schappert, a german girl who worships with us. I

had been talking with Sigrid and Steffi Karg about

    bap

    tism. Sigrid

    was

    already baptized, but Steffi

    was

    only

sprinkled. After many hours of discussion, Sigrid writes

to Michael and tells him about baptism. He

    became

    convinced

    and came

    from

    France

    to be immersed. (He

was working as a missionary with the Menonites.) He

saw that whatever God asked, he should be willing to

do. But I had no knowledge of Michael. Itwas Sigrid

who sha red t h is with

    him.

  • 8/10/2019 Bridges Don 1984 Germany

    22/23

The day Michael was immersed, we had a church

dinner. Most of us went, including the two German girls,

and had a day of fellowship. Since Michael had to be

    back

    in France that

    evening,

I took him to the train sta

tion. Sigrid and Steffiwent along. Aftersending Michael

on his way, we went to the church building to unload

    the chairs. The girls

    stayed

    and talked for awhile. Steffi

    was conv inced tha t

    she

needed to be immers ed, but

    she

    still

    had

    a

mental rese rva t ion . How would

    this

    affect

    her

    family and their relationship? After

    another

    hour and

a half of going through the scriptures,

    she

    said

    she

    was

ready. So, we took her and immersed her into Christ.

What a joy it is to

    see

people who are willing to do

because of their love for Him

    VBS

    MEETING

    We have

    begun

planning for next year 's vacation

bible school. The lessons this year were written and

adapted by the peopl e here {rather

    than

    ordering

material). It was decided that we would do itagain, so

    the wheels

    have

    already started turning. The

    theme

    of

next year's VBS will be Adventures inActs'. We will be

having five lessons with a closing program on Sunday

    night. During

    the

next few months, people ,will be

writing their lessons, seeking for illustrative'matertal,

    and getting craft

    ideas

    and materials together,

    THANKSGIVING

    I

    was

    privileged to

    spend

    Thanksgiving with th e Jim

    Walton

    and

    Ray Roberts families. Although

    t here was

no snow on the ground, we did have plenty of rain. We

    spent

    a

    quiet day

    together talking

    an d

    playing

    some

    games. In th e

    evening,

some of the people from the

    congregation came

    over for a

    dessert

    time.

    Our

    time

spent together proved to be rich.

    We

    have

    so

    much

    fo r

    which

    to

    be

    thankful

    in

    our

    lives.

    We

    s eem

    to over look a t t imes

what we should be mos t

thankful - life in th e Son. We often think of our friends

    an d

    families, our health

    and

    prosperity,

    an d

    our joys

and happiness. But nothing is greater than that God

    has

    spoken

and called strangers to be a part of his fami

ly even his enemies I wonder at limes where our

greatest joy really lies. Is itin being

    able

    to do what we

    want to

    do ?

    Or is it

    the

freedom that is in Christ? {Gai.

How far are you willing to go forChristianfellowship?

30 minutes? 1 hour? There are several families who

travel from thirty minutes to just over an hour for the

fellowship. Two families come from Hahn which takes

just over an hour. There is a bibte study there every

Monday night. Ithas started to grow with a new family

    family

    comes from Zweibrucken.
