The suspension bridge is a relatively common type of bridge that exists in numerous locations throughout world. The most well known of these, perhaps, is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Others include the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, the Wheeling Suspension Bridge in Wheeling, West Virginia, the Ge orge Washington Bridge connecting New York City (Manhattan and New Jersey), USA, the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul, Turkey and the Dry Bridge in Srenjanin, Serbia. The Golden Gate Bridge began construction in January 5 th , 1933 and was completed April 19 th , 1937. It was then opened to the public May 27 th of the same year. The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge began construction in 1988 and was completed 10 years later. It was opened to the public April 5 th , 1998. The Wheeling Suspension Bridge began construction in 1847 and upon four construction end dates was completed for the last time originally in 1872. It was opened to the public in 1851, following its first end date (in 1849). The George Washington Bridge began construction in the October of 1927 and its up per level was opened to the public October 24 th , 1931, while it’s lower level was opened August 29 th , 1962. The Bosphorus Bridge began construction February 1970 and was complete on October 30 th 1973 (and was opened shortly thereafter). Little more is known as to the building of the Dry Bridge other than that it was built in 1962 (“Suspension”).  Reasons behind the erecting of the Golden Gate Bridge primarily consist of connecting San Francisco to Marin County. Before it was built, the only way to c ross between the two was by boat. Ferry services were e rected to allow vehicles to cross the San Francisco Bay, however, it took 27 minutes to cross and only so many vehicles could go at one time. Another reason it was built was because San Francisco’s growth rate was below average and it was believed to be attributed to the fact that it was a fairly isolated city (“Golden”). The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge was created in response to two ferries sinking while crossing the dangerous Akashi strait in a severe storm resulting in 168 deaths. The government then began creating plans for a suspension bridge (Ryan). In anticipation for the National Road being constructed (that reached Wheeling in 1818), t he Wheeling and Belmont Bridge Company was built to link Wheeling to the state of Ohio (currently separated by the Ohio channel) with what would become the Wheeling Suspension Bridge (“Wheeling”). The Dry Bridge in Serbia was built in 1962 to connect Zrenjanin city center with Mala Amerika quarter (“Dry”). The Bosphorus Bridge was built to link Asia and Europe in another location and make transportation of people and goods between them easier and faster (crazyman2). Steel is the main material in the Golden Gate Bridge. 181,000 tons of steel and 1.4 million cubic meters of concrete were used to create the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge (Ryan). The
