Validation of Back Prediction Methodology
Validation of the BPM
Using two different datasets from Maryland
Department of Transportation (Maryland DoT), USA.
- National Bridge Inventory (NBI)
- Element-level BMS condition ratings.
Historical non-bridge factors were also obtained from
those relevant information authorities.
Two different test methods are established using NBI.

Current BMS Issues
Shortcomings related to the use of BMS software:
commercial BMS installed only since 1991;
even early users would have only 6 to 7 inspection records on average;
roughly 60% of BMS analyses/processes rely heavily on bridge condition records/ratings (from new);
Availability: USA – 1991/2009; NSW RTA -1995/2009; QDMR – 2000/2009;
with inadequate condition-rating records, BMS outcomes/forecasts will be unreliable.
Based on few sets of condition ratings, the main difficulty faced by current deterioration modeling techniques
is the lack of usable condition rating datasets.
This in turn leads to an unreliable prediction of future bridge condition ratings.
