Our approach is based on collaboration with architects, developers, approving authorities and stakeholders with the aim of transforming the way people connect with places, creating new opportunities by enabling new links. We are able to assist clients with the design of new bridges as well as the maintenance of their existing bridge stock. This typically includes calculating the strength of an existing bridge, detailing repairs, preparing feasibility studies and undertaking preliminary design, detailed design and supervising construction. We have undertaken schemes for both private and public sector clients, to adoptable and non-adoptable standards, crossing roads, railways and waterways. Our bridge engineers are familiar with traditional construction materials and techniques, but are also enthusiastic about using innovative approaches, better suited to the needs of a particular location or client. An example of this is the recent 3D object modelling of bridge designs for information exchange within BIM. Bridge Engineering

Bridges are fundamental components of transport infrastructure whose form, purpose and aesthetics should be tailored to specific settings and environments.

The bridge team has an in-depth understanding of the background to design codes and standards and, as a consequence, has often been involved in projects where ‘something different’ has been required as well as more routine bridge projects.

A453, M1 Junction 24 to Nottingham

This project saw the widening of this strategic trunk road, upgrading a single to a dual carriageway road. The scheme comprised over and under bridges crossing roads, railways canals and rivers as well as minor highway structures including major drainage structures. 10 new bridges are being created as well as modifications to existing bridges. We assisted the Ccntractor with promoting innovative use of the pre-fabrication of concrete elements (that would traditionally have been constructed on site) using their DfMA (Design for Manufacture & Assembly) approach. This in turn required 3D model exchanges between engineers as part of the BIM.

Stitch Bridge, Kirkstall Forge, Leeds

Our team designed a new adoptable road crossing over the River Aire in Leeds. We also designed reinforced soil walls to support the bridge and adjacent road and riverside walk above the river. The resulting design will feature a major bridge over a fast flowing river with reinforced earth supports for the first time in the UK.

Tay Road Bridge, Dundee

This project involved the major re-configuration of the north approach ramps to the Tay Road Bridge, to facilitate the redevelopment of the waterfront in Dundee. The phased project saw significant sections of the original 1960’s concrete approach ramps and redundant toll booths demolished and replaced by new ramps, freeing up land for development opportunities.

New Canal Bridge and Highways, Gloucester

Substantially funded by the Homes Communities Agency this project facilitated the regeneration of a large area of land on both sides of the ship canal. Our team’s brief included the design of a 67 metre long bridge, with an opening span of circa 28 metre. We provided concept design, through planning, detailed design, design advice and supervision during construction. The resulting bridge provides an eye catching gateway structure to the newly regenerated area

Infinity Footbridge, Stockton-on-Tees

We played a central role in this project from the outset. The unique bridge design, with its pair of continuous, asymmetric structural steel arches, was produced in response to a brief we developed for an international design competition. We then worked on ground investigation, land ownership issues and the planning process, assisting with the tender process for the bridge supervisor and construction on behalf of the client group.

Sandymoor Bridge, Halton

We are designing a new adoptable bridge over a watercourse to provide access and a link road to new housing developments.

Ketton Quarry Bridge, Rutland

We gave advice to the quarry owner, resulting in the commission for the design of a new adoptable bridge to carry a diverted public highway over a working quarry. We considered the impact of the quarry expansion programme to ensure a future-proofed solution.

Cairn Duhie Wind Farm, Nairn

We undertook the inspection and load assessment of five public bridges for the passage of special abnormal loads.
