Boral’s Coast® pavers in Driftwood were used to create a coastal oasis in the backyard of this inner city terrace. The circular sawn texture that is the major feature of these pavers adds a relaxed sea side ambience to the relatively geometric design. A raised timber deck allows a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living

with timber seating jutting out from the deck which, space being at a premium, also doubles as a storage area. Clever use of lighting means that this garden is just as functional at night as during the day, with the texture of the pavers particularly beautiful when accentuated with down lights. RETAINING WALLS OFTEN ONLY COME INTO OUR LANDSCAPING PLANS WHEN WE ARE FACED WITH A SLOPING BLOCK. BUT WALLS CAN BE USED FOR SO MUCH MORE. HERE WE LOOK AT FOUR DIFFERENT WAYS RETAINING WALLS CAN BE USED IN ANY LANDSCAPE PROFILE.

Use a wall to create an elevated focal point in your garden. Like the view from a verandah, the vista from this raised area can give you a whole new perspective on your garden and make it the perfect place to sit and while away the day. To recreate this look, Boral used Heathstone Regal®

and Heathstone Regal® Caps . At 440mm wide and 220mm in height, the larger block allows you to create a gentler curve and thus a bigger raised area. Add sweet perennials planted along the border and you also have a romantic seat to set the stage for a fabulous day outside.

LIFT OFF! RAISED GARDEN SPACES

You’ve created a deck but how do you get rid of that nasty dark space underneath? The simple solution is to wrap a wall around your deck. What do you need? For this look, two different walls have been used. The straight wall leading toward the curved raised area is Heathstone Grande® while the large curved area has been built using Heathstone Regal®.

TANKS A MILLION! Now who doesn’t love a water tank? Environmentally friendly and cost effective, but they can hamper the look of your garden. Make them a more integrated part of the landscape with retaining walls by placing the tanks between the walls at intermittent points.

ARENA WALLArena® wall in Fudge was used to create this minimal patio area. The clean modern look was made all the more striking by the use of large format Aspenstone® pavers in Vanilla with bullnose pavers used on steps. Their smooth, light hues and fi ne linear pattern contrasts beautifully with the rougher hewn fudge wall. A corner unit is available in Arena® so there is no need to mitre the block or the cap. Arena® is such a versatile block that it does not even need a cap to complete the look!(Arena® also known as Litewall® in SA.)

We created these Heathstone Grande® steps using corner blocks in Charcoal. We utilised a classic cap to finish off the look.

BORAL WAS PROUD TO SUPPORT THE AUSTRALIAN CONTINGENT AT THE 2010 CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW, HELPING TO BUILD THE TRAILFINDERS AUSTRALIA GARDEN PRESENTED BY FLEMING’S NURSERIES

WHILE STUNNING ARCHITECTURAL AND LANDSCAPING DESIGN WON THE DAY FOR THE AUSTRALIAN GARDEN AT THIS YEAR’S CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW, STRENGTH AND BEAUTY WAS ON THE INSIDE AS FAR AS BORAL WAS CONCERNED.Providing the core structure for the gold-medal-winning garden was a key contribution for Boral Masonry. “While you can’t actually see our products, they are an intrinsic part of the whole structure,” said Boral Masonry Retail Manager, Victoria, Andy Nyberg.

The 2010 Trailfi nders Australian Garden presented by Fleming’s Nurseries, featuring an indoor-outdoor entertainment area set amid a lush tropical garden, added a unique element to the Chelsea Flower Show.

The Boral products used in the display included more than 1000 concrete blocks in various sizes and around 600 render bricks. These materials were used for the construction of all walls, steps, water features, a lap pool and bar area.

According to Mr Nyberg, these particular materials were chosen for their fl exibility and strength. ‘The walls in the Australian display had to be structural in order to support roofi ng, therefore the blocks were reinforced with steel and core fi lled with concrete. This should be standard practice for all concrete block walls over a metre in height. Consultation by a qualifi ed engineer should be sought,’ he said.

The blocks are an affordable and durable building material for outdoor living projects such as retaining walls, seats, steps, around water features and pools, and the increasingly popular outdoor kitchens and barbecues.

Well designed outdoor living areas have become well and truly entrenched in Australian homes now. These are proper building projects; they are indoor-outdoor areas that people can live in and use for entertaining.

The 18-strong crew of specialists spent 14 hours

a day for 17 days dedicated to the task of ensuring that the garden was built to the highest standard

possible.

Featuring a stunning lap pool and a spa, with areas for eating and entertaining, this garden is designed to

be lived in and enjoyed. A circular theme fl ows through the garden, from the moon window in the pavilion

and laser-cut shapes in the pergola roof, to the circular cutout in the paving feature and the bar stools of the

pool’s wet bar. The jungle-style planting complements the garden’s relaxed atmosphere.
