May 2, 2006 Dear Parent/Guardian, As a step towards increased efficiency in the process of administering the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments, the Virginia Department of Education is now offering local school divisions the opportunity to conduct testing online. In certain subjects, students can now take their SOL test online in the school computer lab. This spring, Briar Woods High School will be conducting SOL testing online in all subject areas. The Virginia Department of Education has conducted numerous studies to ensure that the online tests are comparable to the paper-and-pencil tests. That is, students would earn approximately the same score regardless of whether they took the test online or with paper-and-pencil. Also, the test delivery program provides an online training test for students prior to actually taking the SOL test. However, for students or parents who are uncomfortable with online SOL testing, we will also offer the opportunity to take a paper-and-pencil version of the test. If you or your son/daughter would like more information about online SOL testing, you can download to your home computer a “tutorial.” This is about a fifteen-minute “video”, with either accompanying sound or on screen text that provides an overview of online SOL testing in a variety of different subjects. If your home computer is a PC:

Go to this site to download the tutorial with sound: http://etest.ncspearson.com/Customers/Virginia/sound/TestNavTutorial_sound.exe

Go to this site to download the tutorial with onscreen text but no sound:

http://etest.ncspearson.com/Customers/Virginia/sound_no/TestNav_Tutorial.exe

If your home computer is a Mac Go to this site to download the tutorial with sound:

http://etest.ncspearson.com/Customers/Virginia/sound_no/TestNav_Tutorial.sit

Unless we hear from you otherwise, we will assume that you and your son/daughter are comfortable with online SOL testing. We will only offer a paper-and-pencil test if we are notified that you or your son/daughter would prefer this to taking the test online. If you have any questions I can be contacted at 703-957-4400. Sincerely. Michael E. Byers Assistant Principal

TIPS FOR PARENTS

"Helping Your Students Do Their Best on SOL Assessments"

Take an opportunity to go over the SOL Practice Tests with your child. These are available on the Briar Woods High School web-site.

Encourage your child to remain relaxed and calm during the tests.

Make certain that your child gets a good night's rest and eats a nutritious breakfast before the tests.

If your child needs eyeglasses, make sure he/she brings them to school on all test days.

Make certain your child is in school and arrives on time so he/she won't feel rushed. Please schedule appointments after school hours.

Make sure your child understands to answer every

question on the test in order to increase their chances of passing. An unanswered question is automatically counted as wrong.

The tests are un-timed and students need not feel

rushed to complete the exam.
