LOCAL GIRL WINS
SCHOLARSHIP FOR SPEECH & DRAMA
Young Belinda Loughnan who was a student at St Patricks for most of her life and is now attend-ing the Perabore Christian Community School in Bourke was awarded the Junior Scholarship for 12 years and under in the speech and drama section of the 30th City of Dubbo Eisteddfod. Belinda, who travels to Bourke every day uses the time and her brother (Joss) to practice her pieces, received a certificate and $500 that must go towards the development of her talent. The Scholarship was awarded by the adjudicator on her overall performance which included a poetry recital, bible reading and dramatization for each sec-tion. Belinda was highly commended. The practice for joss on the bus has paid off as together they both took out the third place in the dramatization. Belinda dreams of one day being an actress and I don’t doubt for one minute that she will achieve this goal. Mrs Barbara Loughnan tells me that Belinda has had help from people in our community. Thanks go out to Mrs Mary Spaeth and Local Outback Arts assistance from Kath Cooper. Also Paul Row from Belinda’s school has tutored her. I would like to say congratulations to Belinda and Well done. You are an inspiration to all the children in Brewarrina. It just goes to show if you want something bad enough it is achievable . Belinda says it is great to get to Dubbo and meet new people and to see how the other students perform. It not only helps, it gives you new ways to present your performances.
Treat
Cancer with
Daffodils
… and give hope for a cancer-free future
By taking part in Daffodil Day on Friday 18 August you can help save lives and enhance the quality of life
for those living with cancer. You can help by buying Daffodils and related merchandise, available from the
Brewarrina Shire Council offices in Bathurst Street, Brewarrina.
Last year Daffodil Day raised $2.1M in NSW. Funds raised from Daffodil Day helps fund programs in re-
search, education and support for people with cancer. This year the target is $2.4M.
Sixty years ago almost all cancers were incurable, but thanks to cancer research, better treatments and ear-
lier diagnosis, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. The good news is that 50% of cancers
are successfully treated. But with almost 27,000 people in NSW diagnosed with cancer each year we still
have a long way to go.
Daffodil Day - 18 August 2000
Fire Station Open Day Residents gathered at the Brewarrina fire station on Saturday 22 July for their annual open day activities. Local firefighters were
on hand to offer advice on fire safety, on making 000 emergency calls, and to show and demonstrate the firefighting and other
equipment.
The fire engine carries 13 lengths of 38mm hose, 13 lengths of 70mm hose and its own water supply of 1800 litres. The fire
engine also carries portable fire extinguishers, ladders, breathing apparatus to enable firefighters to fight fires without being
overcome by smoke, fully encapsulated gas suits, rescue and first aid equipment.
Visitors discovered that the fire station is manned by
volunteer local people called retained firefighters. Re-
tained firefighters are employed part time by the NSW
Fire Brigades.
These firefighters are given pagers which notifies them
of ‘call-outs’ where they head to the fire station, dress in
their protective fire fighting clothing and head out to
battle the blaze.
To join the fire brigade you must be over 18 years of
age, and you must pass an interview and a medical ex-
amination. New recruits are sent to Wellington for four
days of training and orientation.
The younger visitors were given colouring-in books, fire
safety stickers, and were treated to a sausage sizzle at
lunch time. Those in attendance came away from the
open day feeling secure that such dedicated people are
looking after the residents of Brewarrina in the event of a
fire.

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor
This is an open letter to those lost youths of
Brewarrina.
This is a letter
ESPECIALLY for the youths who
VIOLATED my home.
You might have no conscience with regards
to your actions when you gain illegal entry to
innocent people’s homes; steal, trash and take
not only possessions that are saleable, but al-
so worthless pieces that nave no intrinsic val-
ue except to the legal owner.
Your families, and those in the community,
who lie for you or just keep their mouths shut
when offered goods, knowing full well that
they have been stolen are helping to just put
off the day when you will finally be convicted
of some horrendous crime, and spend the rest
of your lives in prison;
IF YOU ARE SO BAD NOW, AT SUCH A
YOUNG AGE, WHAT FUTURE DO YOU
HAVE IN REALITY?
I will tell you now. NONE. You have no
future.
You have shunned the gift of education
You have no respect from the majority of the
people in this town.
Do you honestly believe that people don’t
know who you are? Get real people talk,
children tell their friends: Just because you
think you have been smart enough to evade
being caught this time, next time you might
not be so lucky. I feel a deep sadness for you.
Because when you reach my age you will not
have the wonderful memories of laughter,
friendship and most of all LOVE
Bon Parkins.
