D If I were asked what the two most important pieces of equipment I would need in these first four months serving as superintendent, I would have to say comfortable shoes and a smart phone. The first represents the many meetings, events, and school visitations I’ve made trying to absorb as much information about the needs and culture of this great community and the second represents my desire to engage and communicate with as many community members possible. What have I accomplished through these last four months? Getting to know the staff, students and community has been a priority. But just as vital, I have been out listening to what is important to our community, getting your input so that we can work collaboratively to develop a new strategic plan to take Brevard Public Schools to the next level. As part of this journey, I have asked you, our stakeholders, to invest in the process and I’m ready to share the results of the first phase of this process and ask you to help refine what our pri- orities should be, but also work beside us to implement the right strategies to build upon our strengths and address our challenges. If you’ve heard me speak, you have also heard me reference the book, Good Strategy/Bad Strategy by Rich- ard Rumelt. I have asked our school board and leadership team to read the book in preparation of this process, and I’ve asked you to read it as well because strategy matters. Now I’m making another ask. Won’t you join us at the School Board building (ESF) on December 15, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. to view a presentation on our findings? This is a critical issue for BPS and getting the right strategy requires an investment from every sector of our community. 5 Steps to Choosing a Medicare PlanSubmitted by Health First Health Plans

If you’re closing in on your 65th birthday, it’s time to start thinking about choosing Medicare coverage. There are a host of options available, so don’t wait until the enrollment period is upon you before selecting the best plan to help with your medical needs.

1. Start early Consumers should begin research-ing plan options at least six months to a year before they’re eligible for Medicare, so they can have a good understanding of both the benefits and any limitations in the provider network and drug coverage.

2. Learn the languageTo navigate the various plan op-tions, familiarize yourself with the terms. Original Medicare is a fee-for-service plan provided through the federal government. It comprises two parts–Medicare Part A (hos-pital coverage) and Medicare Part B (medical services). A Medicare Supplement, or Medigap policy, is sold by private insurance companies and helps pay some of the costs, such as co-payments, coinsurance and deductibles, not covered by Original Medicare. A Part C, or Medicare Advantage Plan, provides Medicare Part A and B coverage. These plans typically offer lower premiums than Sup-plement plans and may include Prescription Drug Coverage with them.

3. Comparison shopNot all plans are created equal, and coverage and services vary from plan to plan. Be sure to look at costs, service ratings and the doctors and hospitals covered in the provider net-

work. Make sure you’re not trading quality, service and the medical professionals you trust for premiums and co-payments. Remember, using out-of-network facilities may result in the plan paying very little or none of your medical expenses, so look for plans with extensive provider networks.

4. Look for added benefitsMedicare Advantage plans may offer bonuses, such as wellness services, gym memberships and prescription drug coverage.

5. Choose wiselySelect a plan that best meets your healthcare and wellness needs.

Health First Health Plans is a BPS business partner and proud sponsor of the Legacy Club. With more than 3,000 in-network pro-viders, Health First Health Plans members have access to some of Central Florida’s most outstanding physicians. Health First Health Plans Medicare Advantage plans received an overall 4-star rating from NCQA’s Medicare Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2015–2016. Health First Health Plans Medicare Advan-tage plans, provide allowances for dental, hearing and vision; coverage for emergency and urgent care worldwide; no deductibles and a gym membership at no additional cost.

something inside, lock it in the trunk or glove compartment.

• Protect your purse or wallet and clean out any unnecessary items before leaving home. Don’t carry large amounts of cash or extra credit cards. Never leave your purse, wallet or cell phone unat-tended in a public place.

• Shop with a buddy – there is safety in numbers.

• Teach your children what to do if you are separated.

When Driving: • Recognize that the holidays can

cause stress – keep emotions under control while driving. Give other drivers plenty of space and always leave yourself a route to avoid an accident.

• If you attend parties where alcohol is served, remember to drink responsi-bly and use a designated driver.

• Minimize distractions such as talking on a cell phone.

• Take frequent breaks to avoid fatigue, especially when driving long distances. If you get tired, stop and rest until you are able to drive with full attention.

• All drivers and passengers should buckle up.

• Keep doors locked while driving. • Be patient! Give yourself extra

time for travel, especially in rain. Even in dry conditions, traffic during the holidays is heavier than normal and it will take longer than you expect to get around.

• Don’t text while driving.
