OKTOBERFESTThe Cocoa Oktoberfest will feature a riverfront carnival and midway, 5 stages of live entertainment and plenty of good food and beverages. There will be a Saturday Night Street Party on the streets of Downtown Historic Cocoa Village on October 24.

Page 33

MEG O’WEENIt’s advertised as the scariest Halloween party, but the scariest thing about it is, that you probably hear the best original music at a street party that weekend: Medusa and Ambertone. 1,000’s of cash and prizes to win at the costume contest.

UPCOMING CONCERTS

October 21, 8 pm, King CenterWillie Nelson

Willie Nelson is an icon in America pop culture. The songs he wrote became

some of the most popular cover tunes. He has reached the top of the charts with classic hits such as “On The Road Again,” “On My Mind,” and “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies grow Up To Be Cowboy”. Many of Nelson’s songs became hits for some of country and pop music’s biggest stars of the time. These songs include “Funny How Time Slips Away” (Billy Walker), “Hello Walls” (Faron Young), “Pretty Paper” (Roy Orbison) and most fa-mously, “Crazy” (Patsy Cline). Besides being a successful singer-songwriter, Willie Nelson is known as author, poet, actor and activist. He reached his greatest fame during the out-law country movement of the 1970s, but has remained iconic with a career that spans six decades, over 200 albums and every conceiv-able honor including 8 grammy Awards.

October 10, Heidi’s Jazz ClubLarry Coryell

Larry Coryell is one of the world’s ac-knowledged guitar masters. He has re-

corded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and ‘fea-tured accompanist’. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of “the guitar gods” in the late 1970s, he has also been christened as “a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion” by the New York Times, and dubbed “the godfa-ther of Fusion” by Down Beat Magazine. The late 60s thru early 70s saw Larry as one of the most in-demand guitarists in Rock, Jazz and all musical genres. Dur-ing that time Larry was part of rock’s ex-perimentation, he toured with Jack Bruce, and was featured in sessions with Jimmy Webb, the 5th Dimension, Charles Min-gus, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin. Through the albums pro-duced during this period, Larry Coryell emerged as a profound music prophet who merged Rock, Jazz, Eastern modes and scales and free-form improv flashing clas-sical riffs.

Using a mix of soul, blues, jazz, country, and tra-ditional influences, the Marshall Tucker Band

helped establish the Southern rock genre in the early 1970s with its legendary live performances, lengthy improvisations, and a string of gold and platinum al-bums. While the band had reached the height of its commercial success by the end of the decade, a loyal fan base has allowed it to record and perform continu-ously under various lineups for nearly 40 years.

These were the 6th Annual BREVARD LIVE MUSIC AWARDS 09:

STARRY STARRY NIGHT!BMA celebrity-host Paul Chapman

was everything we expected him to be: Hilariously funny, a bit lost, and a brilliant musician. MC John Leach, cool and collect, was the gracious ringmaster keeping the show (and Paul) on track. Miss Lena genovese was a charming assistant and opened the show by singing the National An-them following a guitar-solo by Chap-man. All performers and presenters gave their best. It was rock’n’roll all the way, and it was as glamorous as it gets. It was a full house at the Brevard Live Music Awards on Monday, Sep-tember 14th, at the Henegar Center.

Everyone with name and fame in our music community was there. People drove up in limousines. Lots of glam and glitter everywhere. The performances were unfor-gettable: A heart-felt interpretation of “georgia On My Mind” (Ray Charles) by Micah Read. Pam Jacobs and Marie Davino rocked the audience with “You Shook Me All Night Long” (AC/DC). And 3-time-BMA-winner vocalist Ana Kirby presented a powerful and bilingual “Un-break My Heart” (Toni Braxton). Paul Chapman treated us with his legendary guitar sounds fol-lowed by standing ovations.

The house band with Joe Calautti, Randy Crouch, Da-vid Pastorius and Chilihead kept the music going without missing a beat. The energy on stage was incredible, and MC John Leach had his “hands full” to keep powerhouse Paul Chapman following the program. There were plen-ty of comedic situations, lots of laughter, even more ap-plause, and kindred spirits. “Best show ever!” commented Lou from Lou’s Blues who’s been to every one of them. All participating nominees for the Entertainer of the Year award - green Light, Open Fire, Switch, and Chain Reaction - came dressed in style and were the stars of the award show. Thank you all for your compassion and dedi-cation to live music in this county! Big surprise at the end: Presenter of the “Entertainer of the Year” award was none other than the host of all past BMA-shows, Mister Chris Long. He ended the show by handing the highest BMA honor, the title of the “Enter-tainer of the Year” to Chain Reaction. It was an evening of pure joy and happiness filled with unforgettable memories about our vibrant music scene. Kudos to everybody who helped make this awards show a successful and sold-out event.

Everybody Won! At the end of the night, everybody won. We were able to raise $5,000 for the Brevard Music Aid, Inc. For more information go to www.brevardmusicaid.com.

After the Awards Ceremony last night I realized how important it was to me to see all the wonderful people that I have known and worked with over the years congregated together in a positive life celebrating event. I want to thank all of you at Brevard Live Magazine for giving me that opportunity and the exemplary job that you do in bringing life and music to our community. Like many of the men in his family, Robert Kennedy Jr. has

the look and demeanor of James Bond.

He’s cool and deliberate with both movement and speech. He’s calculat-ing and precise with what he wants and how to get it. To use words like “intimi-dating” and “impressive” would hardly hit the mark, not by a long shot. Like nearly every Kennedy of note, Robert went the ivy league route, attending both Harvard and then Pace University. After law school he served as Assistant District Attorney in New York before moving on to basically save the world. Named one of Time magazine’s “Heroes of the Planet”, Kennedy helped the organization River Keeper lead the way to restoring the Hudson river. He is Clinical Professor and Supervising Attorney at Pace University School of Law’s Environmental Litigation Clinic, Senior Attorney for the Natural Re-sources Defense Council and co-host of Ring of Fire on Air America Radio. Impressed yet? There’s more. Besides being a tireless and relent-less watchdog of the gOP, Mr. Ken-nedy has victored countless environ-mental and human rights issues across the globe. He is credited with helping to protect New York‘s water supply, ne-gotiating peace treaties for indigenous tribes against big business on at least three continents and leading the fight to stop anti-environmental legislation in congress. He’s published an impres-sive collection of books, including a 2004 New York Times bestseller and his award winning articles have been featured in Rolling Stone, Los Ange-les Times, New York Times, Esquire, Newsweek, the Village Voice and the Washington Post among others. In short, Robert Kennedy Jr. is the legal

and political Bono. His latest effort has to do with big coal and what it’s doing to the mountains of Appalachia. A few months ago I had the oppor-tunity to engage Mr. Kennedy and soak up a bit of his humanity. Robert has long been a hero of mine, so it was a real treat and one I won’t soon forget.

BL: So what exactly is going on in Ap-palachia?RK: For at least three decades now coal mining companies have been basi-cally blowing the tops off of mountains to mine their coal. The problems this causes are astronomically detrimental to the people and environment in the surrounding region. Coal dust is con-stantly in the air causing respiratory problems and even lung cancer, falling debris destroys founding streams and rivers, drastically destroying the natural geography. At the same time these com-panies are cutting down vast amounts of forest land and at the rate it’s going the forests of Appalachia will be gone in less than six years. It’s not too much to say this is the biggest environmental catastrophe in our country’s history.

BL: If this is such a huge travesty why has it been going so long? And what, if anything, is being done about it?RK: Just like anything else big busi-ness is involved in, it’s very difficult to trump the lobbyists and get legisla-tion passed. I had very high hopes for Obama, and I still do, but he promised during his campaign to do something about this and so far he hasn’t. The pres-sure big business puts on politicians is amazing and shouldn’t be allowed. Big coal companies and, believe it or not, Bank of America have their hands in so many pockets, it can be difficult to make things happen.

BL: What would you have Obama do if you had your way in the matter?RK: Someone has to own up to the fact that fossil fuel is exactly that…a fossil, a relic. We cannot in good conscience continue to use it. Obama talks about finding a clean way to burn coal- there isn’t one. The reality is, carbon is trea-son and needs to be ended. People talk about air quality and fuel consumption in the same breath all the time, but the real killer is water quality. I’ve spent a good deal of my career tackling water quality issues and I know what I’m talk-ing about. Did you know that it’s unsafe to eat fresh water fish in nineteen states right now? That’s unacceptable. What I want from Obama is for him to live up to the standards he promised us.

It’s important to note that since this interview president Obama has suspended the mining license of a ma-jor coal company in that region of the country.

BL: Okay, so that’s the president. What can WE do?RK: In the coming months we are stag-ing a slew of peaceful protests to help bring light to the situation. We will block streets, we will organize sit ins, we will get arrested.

BL: So to help out we can all go get arrested?RK: Haha… Basically yeah! The idea is to get the word out to people to help put pressure on the politicians from the right side. You can also visit the website of a fantastic organization called Cape Farewell at www.capefarewell.com to find out what else can be done on this as well as other issues.

Last month a very large, very peaceful protest was organized in West Virginia to block trucks getting to the

Brevard Live

mines. The protestors chose a road and the adjacent field next to an elementary school to deter any undue violence. It worked and there was no violence that day. There were, however, a lot of ar-rests and a lot of media to document it. Among those arrested was famed mov-ie star Daryl Hannah.

BL: Earlier this year Chevron was forced to pay the people of Nigeria 4.5 million dollars in damage compensa-tion and most recently a landmark settlement of 16 billion to the people of Ecuador. Your take?RK: Chevron is an evil company and what they have been doing in Nige-ria, in Ecuador, in Burma and many other third world nations is completely criminal. The settlements they have to pay out presently are just a drop in the bucket.

BL: Do you think these suits can be viewed as victories for human rights against big business?RK: I think, particularly the Nigerian Settlement, is a slap on the wrist. Com-

panies like Chevron… American com-panies, have been abusing and literally killing people in that country for de-cades in the name of profit. They aren’t restricted by the same environmental laws we have here, and they pay the workers next to nothing. It’s disgrace-ful and criminal.

BL: I write for a music magazine so I do want to ask at least one question involving music.RK: Yeah you better. I don’t want your editor calling me… ha!

BL: Musicians love to use their ve-hicle to inform us all of their politi-cal beliefs whenever they can. What is your opinion on mixing music and politics?RK: Musicians and really any kind of celebrity are an important currency in the political arena. People, especially young people, listen to what their fa-vorite musician or actor says to them. And that’s the first step- getting people to listen. The media also covers any-thing and everything celebrities do or

say. So again the word is getting out. It’s very important to have respected, well liked people in your corner when you’re dealing on a global level like this.

BL: Our time has been short, but I know there is a lot that you would like to say that needs to be heard. Any final thoughts for the readers of Brevard Live?RK: The world is a lot bigger and a lot smaller than you think, so pay attention to what’s happening because it will af-fect your life. The media likes to play bait and switch a lot and when some-thing really important is going on they might use misdirection to swing your focus somewhere else. You might not know about what American companies have been up to in Nigeria or what’s going on in West Virginia, if your only news source is telling you the latest about Paris Hilton. Stay alert, and re-member that it’s more important to change your politicians than it is your light bulbs.

What a Nutty Day

By Chuck Van Riper

The Column

September 14, 7 AM: I awoke to a cool, blustery morning in NJ. At least it wasn’t raining like the previous week I had spent there. My flight was at 11 AM. We decided to leave for the airport at 8 to avoid the morning traffic into Newark Airport. Usually, the 20 minute drive would take about an hour at this time of day. As it turns out, we got there in the usual 20 minutes. I checked my bag. It was 8:30. I saw that my flight didn’t leave until 11:30. great! 3 hours to hang out in terminal B, which was under construction. I bought a magazine, played video games on my phone, and smoked heavily for 3 hours. Finally we were off. By this time I was getting kind of hungry and looked forward to my bag of airplane peanuts. As I savored each peanut and washed it down with coffee, (which is a great combination, by the way), I was hoping that my connecting flight from Atlanta was on time. As it was, it was set to arrive in Melbourne at 5 PM. Just enough time to get to the BMA awards!

When I got to Atlanta, I saw that my flight had been switched to terminal D. I raced to terminal D to find out that they actually have a whole bar that you can smoke and eat in! Cool! I didn’t have to go to one of those “smoking rooms” that were all glass (I call it the smoking zoo). I looked at the big blue screen to see that my gate was changed to terminal C! Arghhh! I raced over to the terminal, foregoing lunch, and arrived at my gate 10 minutes early. They closed the boarding door! Apparently, the thing you walk unto the airplane through was broken. Flight delayed! A half hour later, though, we were on our way. A sigh of relief, another bag of peanuts and a cup of coffee.

We landed in Melbourne at 5:35. Cheryl picked me up and we were on our way. I was tired and starving. We finally arrive at the Henegar Center! Maybe they’ll have some snacks inside. Heike meets us in the parking lot and tells me she forgot to bring the notes for my little speech. I’m thinking, “What did you have for lunch?” I see a lot of friends. They all look like they ate dinner. After saying hello to everyone, we meander inside and there were the snacks…. more peanuts!! At least there were some pretzels mixed in. Almost all the food groups. Just needed some M&M’s. Still, what makes this event

Brevard Live October 2009 - 21

so great, and why I go every year, is that it’s the only time all these killer musicians are all in on place and we get to hang out with one another. What a blast! I walked back stage to ponder what to say in my presentation. That Brevard Music Aid is a non-profit organization to help those musicians in time of need. What a great cause. I’m proud to be a part of it. We all, as a musical community, should support this effort. That the proceeds from the BMA’s go entirely to this and who we’ve tried to help out in the past. While pondering, I hear from the stage… “…and the winner is… Chuck Van Riper!” I came out and mumbled something. Here’s what I really meant to say:

“Since moving here thirty-something years ago, Brevard County has always been a bastion of incredible musicians. There are many great guitar players around, many of whom were not on the ballot. I am truly honored to receive this award. I wish to thank all of you who voted for me, all the people who come to hear me, my lovely wife, Cheryl, for putting up with me, and all the places that have hired me. Special thanks to Mr. Tony’s, in Palm Bay, for continuing to support live jazz on Mondays, as well as the best live music around, and Frank down at Mezza Luna for making Eau gallie such a happening scene. I’m there usually on Thursdays, and there’s a big Jazz blowout the 3rd Friday of the month, and don’t miss the street fest the first Friday. I’d also like to thank Arty down at the Surfin’ Turtle in Melbourne Beach, where I play solo on Saturday nights. Thanks to all the places that support live music. Congratulations to all the winners. And once again, let’s support Brevard Music Aid. It’s a great thing for our musical family here in Brevard. Thank you all!” - Now let’s eat!

After our conversation I shook my, and the planet’s, hero’s hand and thanked him for his time. Walking away I felt both empowered by Mr. Kennedy’s words and at the same time disappointed in myself for not have the selfless courage to help my fellow man even a quarter the amount that he has. I could tell myself if only I had the time and money of a Kennedy, but that’s not completely fair. Every day of my life I can be making the decisions that will help you and me and everybody. Shouldn’t we all be doing that? One person can’t make much of a difference it’s true. But as one large collective called human kind…, who knows. Until then I’m glad to have people like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on our side.

BRUCE KATZ• Thursday, Oct. 22,

8 pm, The Beach Shack• Sunday, Oct. 25

2 pm, Earl’s HideawayBruce Katz occupies a unique space where blues, jazz, rock, soul, and the many aspects of Americana all collide into a style of original in-strumental music all his own. He is as comfortable playing “soul-jazz” on the Hammond organ as he is playing 1930’s style stride piano or the meanest slow blues. Besides leading the Bruce Katz Band, Bruce is currently playing regularly with Gregg Allman, John Hammond, The Organiks and performing with other artists as well. Bruce was also honored as a 2008 Nominee for the Blues Music Award for “Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year”, selected by the Blues Foundation.

Scene/ CD Reviews

By Matt Bretz

Hey guys! The BMA’s have

come and gone an-other year. I want to thank every-body for all your submissions and I

look forward to getting a lot more from you in the coming months. I listen to everything you guys send me and I take it very seriously to give you the best and most sincerely honest review I can.

I also want to congratulate Stoney and the House Rockers on winning the E.A.R. award this year. This was my first time giving the award out and it wasn’t easy. It’s no secret that we have some fantastic talent in our area. Unfortunately it’s also no surprise

that our scene has become some what stale and repetitive. As musicians we owe it to ourselves and to our audi-ences to change that and bring some-thing new to the scene. When I went looking for my first recipient of this award I was looking for a CD that not only displayed excellence in struc-ture, quality and format…I was look-ing for somebody that wants to shake it up around here. B.B. King said it best “…blues is all around us.” It’s true, blues has become a staple of our community and anytime you go to see live music in this coun-ty you are sure to run into it. But just like the slew of watered down reggae bands playing Bob Marley covers for tourists along the coast, our blues has become derivative and complacent. How many more times do we have

to hear Mustang Sally before that old girl is put down? When I first got my hands on Stoney’s CD I honestly thought it was going to be the same old kind of thing- ten tracks of twelve bar bor-ing. But I was wrong. Stoney and the boys took something that has become a cornerstone to our music scene and did something different. From the delta to Chi town they cover nearly every genre of the music and they put there own stamp on it. Well done boys!

Send your CD (no demos for club gigs) to following address:Brevard Live MagazineAtt.: CD ReviewsP.O. Box 1452, Melbourne, Fl 32902. Please include a short bio and info about the performers.

STRYPERGod Squad To Rock Florida

SoCal powerhouse rockers, Stryper return to the US concert trail this fall in support of

their latest release, Murder by Pride. Known for spreading a lyrical message more powerful than their mighty metal riffs, Stryper achieved gold and platinum success in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s with chartbusting albums like To Hell with the Devil and In god We Trust. The band also became an MTV staple with color-ful, high energy videos for such hits as “Free,” “Calling on You” and the timeless power bal-lad, “Honesty.” 2009 finds the original line-up of front-man/guitarist Michael Sweet, drummer Rob-ert Sweet, lead guitarist Oz Fox, and bassist Tim Gaines together again for the first time in several years. Fans attending dates on this, the band’s 25th Anniversary tour, can expect a healthy portion of classic Stryper hits com-bined with prime cuts from Murder by Pride, a record which rock critic Bert Saraco recently described as the band’s “most accessible, well-rounded project ever.”

Space Coast fans may also recognize a familiar face behind the scenes as Brevard Live’s own Christopher Long (photo right) will be touring with Stryper as a member of the band’s official staff.

After thirteen weeks, Siggy’s American Bar summer-long 2009 Battle of the Bands competition came to an

exciting conclusion on Thursday night, September 10th. Two dozen bands participated in the annual promotion, and after months of preliminary and semi-final competi-tion, grinstone, Bullet Theory, The Jamie Rickett Band and Who Was I rounded out the Final Four. “By its very nature, Battle of the Bands is an imper-fect, dopey premise,” commented co-promoter Christo-pher Long as he announced this year’s winner. “But in 2009 it’s still the best way to rally support for local music. In the end, there are no losers.” The winning band was determined based on audience votes combined with judges votes from Florida Discount Music, Ta Da Entertainment and Black Lodge Studio. South Brevard newcomers, Bullet Theory took the audi-ence vote while Melbourne’s grindstone swept the judges votes, ultimately putting the fresh-faced alterno rock com-bo over the top. Consisting of guitarist John Robert Bridges III, drum-mer Matt Luisi, bassist Dylan Thiebeau, and vocalist Ross

Adair, Grindstone performed their high energy, forty-five minute set featuring a combination of popular modern day covers and snappy originals before an enthusiastic crowd. For their efforts, grindstone took home hundreds of dollars worth of gift certificates from Florida Discount Music, a True Music sponsorship courtesy of Budweiser, a $1,000 prize package from Black Lodge Studio and $1,000 cash, compliments of Siggy’s. Look for the reigning champs to return to Siggy’s stage on Saturday, January 2nd.

Space Coast Harley-Davidson

Hosting The 6th AnnualBikers For Babies Benefit

When Space Coast Harley-Davidson opened its new location in 2005

at I-95 in Palm Bay, they combined their Grand Opening with a great benefit, Bik-ers For Babies, a fundraiser for the March of Dimes. It was very successfull raising thousands of dollars, and SC Harley-own-er Steve Oktela and his sister Joyce (GM) decided to make it a signature event for their business. This year they are hosting the “sixth annual” on November 7th and 8th with an escorted 65-mile-ride and great music all weekend long.

“Harley riders have always worked with local charities, and this is a good cause,” explained Steve. It began more than 15 years ago when the March of Dimes has partnered with motorcy-clists nationwide providing an oppor-tunity for motorcycle clubs, dealer-ships, vendors and individual riders to join together for babies in communi-ties. Last year, more than 35,000 riders and 250 motorcycle clubs joined to-gether to help prevent premature birth and birth defects. Steve also admits that it is a great opportunity to show off your bike, bond with friends and, of course, en-joy an escorted 65-mile-ride without

the stop’n’go of the city traffic. “It’s just a good time.” The fee for the ride is $35 per bike, which includes lunch and a patch; $10 per passenger, and if you register by November 1st, you will save $10. For more information and to register go to www.bikersforbabies.com.The schedule is as follows: Thursday, November 5th, at 6 pm: Kickoff party at Long Doggers bike night, with live music, and pre-registration for ride. Saturday, November 7th, 10 am to 6 pm: Fashion show at 2 pm Pre-party at Space Coast Harley-Davidson. Live music with King Street, Elgin

Hooper and Open Fire, vendors, food, beer, and pre-register for ride. Sunday, November 8th, 8:30 am to 4 pm: Registration for ride from 9-10:45 am. Kickstands up and ride begins at 11 a.m. 65-mile RIDE escorted by Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. No stops! After the ride, party at Space Coast Harley. Bonefish Willy’s in Eau Gallie

New Deck, New Beach, New Dock- Same Great Atmosphere

When Tina Quinn and Terry Holt took over Bonefish Willy’s ten years ago, it was a dinky little river-res-

taurant with a lot of local history. Both had been driving along the Florida east coast to find the right place. “And this was it”, said Tina. “It had potential.” - What she meant with “potential” has become reality: Bonefish Willy’s now flaunts two large decks, one with colorful sun-sails, a new beach with sand-chairs and table, and a dock. What hasn’t changed is the Florida flair. You feel com-fortable walking in dressed in shorts and flip-flops to relax and enjoy a few hours on the magical Indian River. The moonrise is as fascinating as a shuttle launch, no kidding. go see it again and again. It’s Florida living at its best. Sip one of Bonefish Willy’s frozen specialty drinks, and enjoy their flavorful menu. Tina and Terry take pride in their recipes featuring fresh seafood and unique flavors. Steak, chicken, and veg-gie dishes are also available. We tried the grouper Willy, a lunch favorite, which is a grilled grouper on pumpernickel bread topped with pineapple cole slaw, cheddar jack cheese and a home-made creamy remoulade sauce with pasta salad. We also had the Salmon Oscar topped with a delicious Blue Crab meat stuffing, baked and served on a bed of steamed asparagus and finished with a delightful key lime hollan-daise sauce, along with yellow rice and sweet carrots. The portions were huge, and the flavor delightful. The beautiful new sail-shades and the light river-breeze keep the temperature moderate on the upper deck even on hot days. It’s a perfect place to escape for a few moments into paradise. If you like that with live music, come on Fri-day or Saturday night and listen to Aaron Cole or Chester. Located at 2459 Pineapple Avenue in Melbourne. Telephone: 321-253-8888. www.BonefishWillys.com

A colorful, tropical setting, with a relaxed atmosphere and a fresh breeze from the beautiful Indian River, that’s Florida living at its best. You find this little paradise at Bonefish Willy’s now with more deck space, a beach and a brand-new dock.

Florida Dining

By Mara Bermudez

B33022 Corrine Drive

Orlando, FL

One part coffee house, one part wine bar, and one part neighborhood café makes Bikes, Beans &

Bordeaux, or B3 for those in the know, a quaint eatery in Audubon Park, serving a mouth-watering menu with a cycling flair. B3’s down-to-earth atmosphere, weekly events, and wholesome food have made it a burgeoning community favorite among urban bikers as well as pedestrians and drivers alike.

The afternoon I visited, I opted to take a seat outside, enjoy the balmy breeze, and cool off with an Italian soda, a combination of flavored syrup and club soda, a bright treat on a waning summer afternoon. This seasonal beverage has remained on the menu due to popular demand and is available in other equally sipable flavors like watermelon and granny Smith apple. The seasonal salad proved to be a steady start with plump blueberries, pungent blue cheese crumbles, and crunchy pecans on a generous bed of fresh spinach with raspberry vinaigrette dressing served on the side. The hummus wheel ($6.99), a thick and creamy hummus encircled by “spokes” of seasonal vegetables, was a clean breakaway and led directly to the Mediterranean flatbread ($7.99), a flatbread topped with tomatoes, red onions, Kala-mata olives, pepperoncinis, and feta and mozzarella chees-es. The Kalamata olives and feta cheese supplied a pungent tangyness while the pepperoncinis, small yellow peppers, provided a subtle heat. Once again, the pace picked up with the sandwiches, many named after famous cyclist like the Hincapie Hammie ($6.99), named after American cyclist george Hincapie. The Hincapie Hammie puts a spin on the traditional ham and Swiss cheese combo by adding a layer of raspberry preserves. The sweet and salty flavor combo is unusual, but intriguing enough to the last bite. Each sand-wich is served with your choice of pickle spear and chips or carrot sticks as well as a small bag of jellybeans. J-Nutella panini, gelato, and an assortment baked goods make for a sweet finish-line. The menu also offers am¥ple breakfast, vegetarian and kid-friendly options. In addition, B3 also of-fers an abundant selection of beers and wines, which change monthly depending on which region is hosting a cycling event. Despite its modest space, B3 has a modern décor featur-ing local artwork, cycling accents, and flat screen televisions

that play cycling races. Seating is comprised of a handful of indoor and outdoor tables, and matching black leather sofas. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The overall atmosphere is laid-back, but welcoming. Parking is somewhat limited depending on the time of the day so walking or biking is encouraged. Florida Art

By Lou Belcher

Sloane Keats

Born and raised in Nyack, New York, her family moved to Delray Beach, Florida, when she was 9 years old. She lived there until two years ago. Art has always been a part of her life. She remembers sketching and painting with watercolors when she was young. Keats attended her first art class when she was in the 6th grade. She took the class at the Delray Beach Art Center. Her next art class was dur-ing her freshman year of high school. At that point, she knew she wanted to pursue art. When she was 25, she took class-es in painting, design and drawing at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. She has a portfolio of the beau-tiful work she produced during that period. She did receive an honorable mention from a juried show of the Women’s Art League in Boca Raton. That aside, she pretty much put her art on hold while she started a family

and worked with her husband in their flower business. Two years ago, Keats and her family moved to Indialantic. Her hus-band started Beachside Bagel World and Deli in Satellite Beach where she works two to three days per week. But when they moved here, she decided it was time to pursue her artwork. They created a studio in their home for her and she resumed working in oil with a palette knife. After Keats completed several paintings, she began hanging them at the bagel shop. Her beautiful beach scenes caught the attention of patrons. One day she decided to paint an ab-stract of a wave, put it up in the shop and sold it. After that, she decided to become more involved in the Brevard art world. She soon joined the Brevard Cul-tural Alliance, the Strawbridge Art League and the Central Brevard Art

It’s so refreshing to hear someone say

that they have found what they love to do. Sloane Keats started painting seriously two years ago, and judging by her schedule and her productivity, she is moving ahead full speed to accomplish her dreams.

Association. Now, her work is exhibited through the CBAA Art in Public Places program. She has had her paintings in the Cocoa Library, the Suntree Library, Wuesthoff Hospi-tal, and the Space Coast Endoscopy Center. She enjoys showing her work in outdoor venues as well. Her first art festival was the Hibiscus Festival in Vero Beach in March 2009. She said it was a good experience. Outdoor art festivals are second nature to her, probably an outgrowth of the routine of their flower business in Boca Raton where they sold fruit, vegetables, cut flowers, and food after setting up their stand each morning. Con-sequently, after setting up the flower stand daily, it’s no stretch for her to put up a tent and arrange her artwork. This fall, you’ll find her at several outdoor art festi-vals. The first is the Main Street Masters of Art festival in historic downtown Melbourne, October 3rd and 4th. Sec-ondly, she has applied to be in the Eau gallie ArtWorks Festival on Highland Avenue in the Eau gallie Arts District on November 21st and 22nd. (She had not heard from the application committee at the time this article was written.) She has been accepted into the 46th Annual Space Coast Art Festival on Thanksgiving weekend in Cocoa Beach. Be sure to look for her in that show. In addition to the out-side shows, she will also participate in the CBAA Heritage Isle Show in Viera. She is thoroughly enjoying her art. She has always wanted to create and has often thought that the ultimate life would be to stay home and paint and raise her chil-dren. The new life seems to be right in keeping with her hopes. She now has plenty of time for her painting, for her husband’s surfing and for the children after school. She is painting in preparation for the upcoming shows and also is very active with her children. She’s a girl Scout leader and volunteers with art projects at her children’s school. Keats says she mainly works in oil because it is so versatile. Many of her paintings follow a beach theme, but she says that she paints what she sees and what catches her eye. With the palette knife she seems to have fallen into a style of her own that includes beautiful texture. She says that with art, she always wants to do better. She knows that she will always paint and loves the thought of turning a simple scene into something that people want. She also enjoys pastels, watercolor, acrylic and would one day like to expand into stained glass. Be sure to watch for her wonderful paintings during the busy fall art sched-ule.

If you’d like to see some of her work in person, stop by the bagel shop. She can also be contacted at [email protected] or by phone at (321)610-7719.

What Men Do Wrong - Volume 2

In the first installment of this se-ries, I surveyed a hundred wom-

en to find out what would be a turn off upon first meeting someone. I had them all list their top ten deal breakers and, to be honest, I was more than a little surprised by some of the results. If you didn’t catch that one…make sure to look it up at www.brevardlive.com so you can keep up. This month I took the next step and asked the women of Brevard about what they expected, or hoped for, when they actually decided to hand over the digits. When should he call? How often? When should he ask you out? These are a few of the questions I asked and here are the answers.

1. What is the ideal length of time you expect to wait before receiving the first call? Does the 3 day rule ever work on you? There has been a myth perpetuat-ed by both the media and every smack talking wannabe player you have ever known. The infamous “3 day rule”, may have had its time in the sun, but those days are over, my friend. This is the information age and things are moving faster everyday. People don’t have the patience to wait 3 days to hear from you and women in particu-lar seem to be tired of putting up with it. There are definite exceptions to the rule, but when asked this question the large majority shared one very strong opinion. If you like the girl, call her the very next day. Easy as that.

2. Would you rather him call or text

you in the beginning? Nowadays we have a new ar-row in the quiver - texting. The allure is undeniable. You can be both brave enough to say what you want to whom-ever you want, and at the same time hide behind the fact that it‘s not “face to face“. Women love texting, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they want it to be your first conversation. Maybe a quick little note after you first meet - “it was nice to meet you” etc -, but the first real conversation you have needs to be voice to voice on the phone. Tex-ting is for flirting later when you’re supposed to be working. grow a pair and dial that number.

3. How many conversations should you have before he asks you out? The answers to this question were all over the board. My advice is just to feel it out and decide for yourself. If the first conversation is great and the two of you are hitting it off, ask her out right away. If it doesn’t feel quite warm enough yet, wait and see how the next call goes.

4. What are some of the best and worst things he can say during the first con-versation? No dead time. No vulgar or sexist jokes. No rudeness. Just be nice, keep it light and make her laugh. The truth here is that you need to just relax and be yourself. Only a little more polite than usual. Be yourself and let loose. If you are yourself and the conversation flops, be grateful you found out early and didn’t have to spend fifty bucks on dinner.

5. What about the internet…myspace, face book, IM etc…, when should any or all of that come into play?

This was a touchy one, boys. With all the trouble girls go to to make their facebook and myspace sites so pretty and unique, you might think they want you to go look at it. Not exactly true. If you jump on the web and start sending friend requests to your new “friend”, you will look creepy. As a matter of fact I would recommend you never send a friend request. If things go well, she will add you, and if she does, take it as a sign things are good.

6. Regardless of how things appear, do you anxiously wait by the phone after first meeting someone? This wasn’t the easiest topic for a lot of the women I talked to. Women, just like men, like to hold up a façade of indifference, but after some prodding and poking most gave in and admitted the truth. If she likes you then yes, just as you are checking your phone every five seconds so is she. This informa-tion doesn’t do much in the way of helping, except to demystify things a bit. But it’s nice to know the playing field is a little more leveled than you might have thought.

7. How many of your friends get to read your emails and texts? All of them! Don’t fool yourself chaps. I learned along time ago, the hard way, that every email and text you send will be scrutinized, debated and voted on by a panel of select female judges. You can also be sure that every email and quite a few of the texts she sends back will be written, edited, re-written and in some cases even ghost written before she hits send. They are not messing around when it comes to this, so keep your wits about you and be on your game. You’ve been warned.

She’s Just Not That Into You!

SEX BEACHANDTHE

Brevard Live October 2009 - 45

8. Do long periods of time between texts or short an-swers typically mean you are not interested? At least 80 percent of the women polled said, “yes!”. It’s hard to hear, but it’s the truth. If you keep sending cute little flirts or asking questions to try and get a conver-sation going and she just isn’t biting, give up for awhile and see if she contacts you. Sometimes the hardest part about new relationships is knowing when to walk away and cut your losses. I know you’re excited, but if she’s throwing negative signals pay attention. You don’t want to be stuck in a losing battle.

Okay! You made it through the first impression, you got the number, you had two or three really great con-versations and you’ve successfully made plans for a first date. Now what? I’ll tell you next month. Until then, remember this: No matter what advice you follow or don’t, the true skill in all of this is just hav-ing the confidence to be yourself and being comfortable being yourself. Do that and everything else will fall in line. Willy said it best “…to thine own self be true.”
