Childhood should be a time of wonder, learning and development surrounded by loving, caring families. Thankfully, for most children that is the case. But for some, it is an uncomfortable, often threatening time. Those children need help.

Thankfully, for the last 35 years the Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society has been there to offer that help by supporting children, young people and their families through the many challenges they face. They have been able to do that because of the strong partnerships they have with our schools and our parishes. The existence and continued development of bccs is something we should be proud of but not take for granted; without our prayers and material support it could not continue with its vital work.

Since bccs was established in 1984, the world our children and young people inhabit has changed dramatically. Ensuring successful progress through home and school in the modern age can place immense stress on children. Many of the certainties of a generation ago have gone, leaving them unsure of their

place in the world; the internet and social media have opened up new ways in which they can be preyed on or bullied.

bccs has responded magnificently to all of these challenges, reaching out to thousands of children who need help every year, developing new training courses to help schools identify and respond to problems and even giving up some of its own office space to create a suite of counselling rooms. The professionalism of its social worker and counselling teams wins praise from everyone who comes into contact with them. They are on the front line and their dedication is unwavering.

They are supported by a small administrative team who, among other things, have the task of making sure the resources are available to meet the rapidly growing demands placed on bccs. That is why I am asking you to think about how you can support bccs especially in its 35th anniversary year. There are plenty of events, a wealth of fundraising ideas and sponsorship opportunities so please take a minute to think about whether you could do something new to support bccs.
