Winter Programme January – March 2017
At Brent Children’s Centres you will discover a wide range of services, help and advice to support families from pregnancy through to a child’s fifth birthday.
From baby clinics and postnatal classes to drop-ins, stay and plays, parenting classes, support with speech and language, training and support getting back to work, we aim to cater to the needs of all families with children aged 0 to 5.
This booklet is a guide to all that’s happening at your local children’s centre and across the borough of Brent.
The purple tab, ‘Central’, covers activities and services in the St Raphael’s and Church End part of Harlesden and around Wembley Central, Sudbury and Alperton.
The green tab, ‘Grange’, covers activities and services in the Kilburn, Queens Park and Willesden areas.
The blue tab, ‘Stadium’ covers activities and services in the North Wembley, Wembley Park, Kingsbury and Kenton areas.
Towards the back of the brochure you will also find information about parenting programmes, fathers’ activities, news articles and other information that we hope you will find useful.
Over the coming months, we look forward to welcoming you and your children at your local children’s centre.

Important Information
Charges and Donations at Barnardos Children’s Centre’s (Central, Grange and Stadium)
Free Services:We work in partnership with other organisations to provide a number of fully funded services for Brent families with children 0 – 5 years such as Citizens Advice Brent appointments, Community Midwifery Services, Parenting Programmes, Speech and Language Services and Family Support etc.
Voluntary Contributions:In order to provide an even wider range of good quality activities for children and families we ask parents/carers for a small voluntary contribution towards some of the running costs such as refreshments or resources used in sessions such as Stay, Play and Learn sessions, exercise classes etc. We have a suggested minimum amount of £1 per session.
Subsidised Activities/Charges:There are some activities that we charge for; such as Baby Massage, Trips, Baby Yoga and other services where we may need to bring in outside organisations or fund additional resources to provide a service. We will always aim to keep charges affordable and subside some of the costs. If contributing towards sessions is preventing you from accessing an activity, speak to a member of staff. Our aim is to provide inclusive services.
Closure Days:Please note centres will be closed on the following dates for staff training: Thursday 16th and Friday 17th of February 2017.
Disclaimer: The information provided within this brochure may change so please contact your local children’s centre to ensure the sessions and times are still correct, especially during school holidays.

Central ClusterHappy New Year to all our Brent Families, there is lots to look forward too. The Black History Month Story time sessions across the cluster were a great success, so have introduced regular Story time sessions and opened two Children Centre libraries. Families can use this opportunity to encourage the love of books in there children, and borrow up to 4 books at a time.
We are also really excited to announce a monthly Saturday Stay, Play and Learn session, every 3rd Saturday of the month at St Raphael’s Children’s Centre.
This is only some of the many things we have to look forward to in the Central cluster, come over to your local Children’s’ Centre join one of our sessions and have your say on our Parents Voice. Please speak to a member of the team to find out, what it’s all about and how you can be involved.
We look forward to seeing you all soon.

35Winter Programme January – March 2017
There are times in the year that can bring joy as well as additional stress to families, such as Christmas, birthdays, and also the higher than normal winter bills that require extra finances. All of which can leave parents feeling anxious if they are unable to pay for the items, extra bills, presents, or an unexpected bill.
Communication is one of the key ways to cope with this pressure. However, if you do not feel that you can talk with your energy supplier, a family member or friend about your finances, then contact your local children’s centre to make an appointment to speak with a Citizen’s Advice Brent (CAB) advisor.
Citizen’s Advice Brent formally known as Brent Citizen’s Advice Bureau has advisors based within 13 Children’s Centres across Brent and provides a free service. CAB Advisors can offer professional advice and support, liaise with energy suppliers, and work with you to help find solutions. For the complete list of support and advice provided by CAB please contact your local children’s centre or on the CAB website www.brentcab.co.uk.
To make an appointment to speak with a Citizen’s Advice Brent Advisor please call your local Children’s Centre.

Remembering Dad – Daddy Daddy Look
There are lots of things I remember about my father but two stand out. Him standing on the side lines at one of my rugby matches (I am a New Zealander) and saying at the end, although we lost, that was a good game you should be proud of the way you played and the second was playing snooker with him in a snooker club feeling very grown up. I often watch children at our father’s sessions running up to Dad to show them something they have made or they have done and I think that may be something they will remember when they think about their dads later in life. I watch mums, having that experience regularly and think oh if only Dad was here but in our world most have to work. So at our Fathers programme we try to create more of those chances for children to remember Dad.
First Friday night of the month at Willesden Sports Centre is really family fun for all. We have a bouncy castle, (yes the Dads and some mums get on it) lots of toys, space to play football and pizza. Only condition Dad must be there.
Saturdays are less hectic and usually have a theme. Once a month we focus on the really young ones. Other times there is a class or local trip. Saturday Mornings are about fun, learning and the opportunity to meet and talk with other fathers. Some sessions you have to book, for others it is just about turning up. We also provide one off events and trips throughout the year. Watch out for the fliers. You can find our more in the timetable or email us on [email protected]. We email out regular updates so if we have your email we will let you know what is happening.

Caring for your Children’s Teeth
Brush twice a day at least two minutes each time
1. Use fluoride toothpaste.
2. Amount of tooth paste:Children under three should only use a smear of toothpaste. Children between three and six should not use more than a small pea size.
3. Spit, don’t rinse. We should only spit after brushing our teeth. This means, we should not rinse after brushing. The fluoride in the toothpaste will continue to protect the teeth for longer.
Use of mouthwash
Mouthwash should not be used straight after brushing. This should be done at other time, if you wish to use mouthwash.
Visiting the dentist
The frequency of your visit (for regular check up) is determined by the dentist. This could be as frequent as every three months or as infrequent as every two years, depending upon your oral health need.
Sugary foods and drinks
Sugary foods and drinks should only be consumed with your meals, if consumed. Higher intake of sugary foods is linked with over weight and many other diseases.
Do you know that the highest rate of hospital admission among children is because of tooth decay?
Take your child to the dentist from an early age around one year so they get used to going to the dentist.
