But Van Zyl-Wohlfarter says winning the competition is not just a “nice title”, but a “working prize”. She explains that Cape Info will launch programmes, identified by key roleplayers who will assist the town with mar- keting Montagu as a travel and economic deve- lopment destination. Carl Momberg, publisher of Cape Info, says Montagu offers a combination of “stunning ar- chitectural heritage, a very lively community and a mountain setting which is unsurpassed anywhere in the world”. He says the award can lead Montagu to strengthen its offering even further. “I have no doubt that locals will realise the opportunities.” He says it is important to promote tourism, because it creates jobs. “Tourism creates better environments and more creative and stimulat- ed communities.” Van Zyl-Wohlfarter says the tourism sector is immensely important, not just to Montagu but to the entire area. She says the other economic sectors such as agriculture and canning are limited in their growth because of rising fuel and electricity costs. Despite economic challenges, the tou- rism industry is showing growth. “Tourism is not just important for tourism businesses, but also for other businesses such as grocery stores.” She adds that tourism brings visitors and money into a town that cre- ate jobs and uplift the community. On the Cape Info website, the Montagu Infor- mation Office was branded as “the best” Infor- mation Office. The Montagu Information Of- fice was also elected as runner-up for the best Information Office at the Cape Winelands Dis- trict Municipality’s Mayoral Awards earlier this year. Momberg says that some of Montagu’s strong points are the beauty of the surrounding moun- tains and its position on the popular Route 62. However, Momberg says that clear branding for Montagu is still needed.

Dis ietswat jou stil-stil bekruip en komalmeervoor by jonger ouderdomsgroepe.

As jy wonder of jy diabetes het, laat toets jouby jou dokter, apteek of kliniek.

For your convenience we are open during lunch hours.

Cultivate a healthy mind and healthy bodyWe’ve all heard the hype around “a healthymind, ahealthybody”,butwhatdoesthisreallymean, andwhat impact does it have to you andyour health? There is a long list of ailments and illnesses

withassociatedonset relating tounhealthy liv-ing, and more particularly, unhealthy eatinghabits and lack of exercise. Everyday ER24transport patients by ambulance, and see pa-tients who are in hospital with various ail-ments and illnesses. One of the diseases withmore and more reported cases per day, andwhich is now being called an epidemic, is Dia-betes Type 2.DiabetesType2is thepreventable typeofdia-

betes, with only a small percentage of cases re-lating to familyhistoryandgenetics.Thecause

is almost always related to a diet high in sugar, fats and a lack of daily physical exercise. With thebodyhaving toconvert these sugars

at a high rate every day by using insulin, cellsbecome increasingly resistant to taking up thesugars to use them as required, and the sugarsthen remain in the blood stream.By not being physically active, the metabo-

lism slows down, promoting the body to storemore fats, thereby impacting the problem.Once Diabetes Type 2 is diagnosed, a person

will need to start taking chronic medication, which will aid in the uptake of the sugars sothat the body may still be able to use them.Every cell in the body uses these for energy,

and if the cells do not obtain the requiredamount, they will be unable to work at their

optimum.Themost important organ to consider in the

bodywithregards tohealthy living is theheart. When you are depriving your body of appro-

priate nutrition or you are living anunhealthylifestyle, the heart suffers the most. The heartneeds the best care in order to keep the otherorgans functioning as they should.Simply changing your mind set when it

comestohealth,nutritionandexercisecanpre-vent onset of chronic illness or at least signifi-cantly reduce thepossibility of getting a chron-ic illness that could have been otherwise pre-vented.Take the necessary steps today to protect

yourself and your family by adopting a “ahealthy mind, a healthy body” attitude.

Street children helpedDALEEN FOUCHÉ

The Nieuwe Horizons organisation, whichworks with vulnerable children in Ash-bury, is urging residents to not givemoneyor food to children who are begging on thestreet.

Nieuwe Horizons is a non-profit organisa-tion that presents various programmes, in-cluding feeding schemes, education and afterschool programmes, to several Ashbury chil-dren. It receives most of its funding from theNetherlands.Nieuwe Horizons recently distributed pam-

phlets throughout Montagu to urge residentsnot to give money to street children.Sanja van de Sande, aMontagu resident and

a contributing member of Nieuwe Horizons, says street children in Montagu earn up R100per day. She says the result is that many chil-dren choose to beg on the street rather thanattend school. She explains that the children buy drugs or

alcohol with themoney and even sell food thatthey receive to buy drugs. Van de Sande saysthat children as young as eight years old willbuy drugs. She says further thatmany of thesechildren have drug and alcohol dependent pa-rents.

But the information campaign to make resi-dentsawareof theproblemisonlythefirststep.Van de Sande says that there are severalprojects in the pipeline to improve the lives ofthese children.Montaguresidents are current-lyworkingwith themunicipalityandsponsorsto establish sport grounds and sporting goodsin Ashbury so that an after-school programmefor the children can be created. An extra classroom at Ashbury Primary is

alsobeingbuiltwith thehelp of theABSACapeEpic and Joel Stransky, so that children whodo not have basic education may have a sepa-rate classroom. Van de Sande saysmany of thechildren suffer from foetal alcohol syndromeand struggle to remember what they havelearnt.Van de Sande, who worked as a teacher in

the Netherlands for over 32 years, gives aca-demic and music classes to the children whoare willing to attend.Van de Sande urges residents not to give

money to these children, so that they can stayin school and participate in programmes oflearning. Sheasks that residents ratherdonatemoney to Nieuwe Horizons, which feeds andclothes the children. If you would like to get involved or give a

donation, you can contact Van de Sande on0 023 614 3525.

Protect diversityCapeNature released its annual report on bio-diversity last week, placing a renewed empha-sisonthediversenaturalresourcesof theWest-ern Cape.Anton Bredell, Western CapeMEC for Local

Government, who was the keynote speaker atthe launch of the report, stated that althoughthe Western Cape only constitutes 11% of theland surface of SouthAfrica, this space housesmore than half of the country’s plant species. He says 57%ofmammals, 51%birds and 65%

of the country’s freshwater fish are found inthe Western Cape.Population growth and industrial develop-

ment threaten biodiversity and the wealth ofnatural resources in the Western Cape.It is now more important than ever to find

sustainable ways of living and developing theeconomy without sacrificing our natural re-sources and environment.

BONNIE PEOPLE NOW MOBILE:Christmas came early to the Bon-nie People Creche in Bonnievalethis year when they were presen-ted with not one, but two vehiclesfrom organisations who have tak-en a keen interest in the develop-ment of this dynamic little centre.A Toyota Quantum Bus was donat-ed by the Bonnievale Project Lux-embourg while a Toyota Avanza 7-seater vehicle was donated by theBreede River Winelands RotaryClub. The Bonnie People crechewas started by one of the localRotarians, Heidi van der Merwe, some 15 years ago. It has growninto an immensely valuable com-munity project in Bonnievale andassists the inhabitants of an infor-mal settlement by running a feed-ing scheme for all the children andhosts, a day-care facility for chil-dren aged 0 – 2 years and a nurs-ery school for 3 – 6 years old. Italso facilitates some youth andadult activities.

Dankbaarheid of propaganda?Dankbaarheid of propaganda?

So, diemunisipaliteit het nie virmnr. Latha

Latha

aan julle bekend is.LIONEL ADENDORF, Bonnievale

Soyisile Mokweni, manager of the Lange-berg Municipality, responds:Themunicipality fully agrees that it is ourdu-

ty to provide housing on behalf of National andProvincialGovernments.Wehaveneverrequest-ed Mr Mlatha to publish such article. Manyhouses have been built and handed over to bene-ficiaries andwe continue to do so but have neverdemanded publicity in exchange. There aremany citizens who have written to us thankingthe municipality for the various things we aredoing and Mr Mlatha is only joining the manyvoices that are grateful forwhat themunicipali-ty is doing. It is common for the human race to say thank

you for a job well done, regardless of whetherwe paying for it or not.MrMlathahas his demo-cratic right to expresshisappreciation inwhich-ever way he wishes to do so. If I remember wellMr Mlatha is also expressing his appreciationfor the eye test that was paid for him and thespectacles he received. Why is that not also re-garded as propaganda because Mr Mlatha isconstitutionally also entitled tohealth care fromthe government. There is lots of negative propaganda that is

published weekly in the same Gazette about themunicipality, and I am yet to hear anyone criti-cizing TheGazette for running a bad campaignagainst the municipality. As a community newspaper, The Gazette

should be balanced, factual and not be sensa-tional.

Historic house on the marketAn historic Cape Dutch manor house hascome on to the market in Robertson.

“De Oude Opstal” is one of the two oldestproperties in the entire town, already appea-ring on a map as “the old farmhouse” at thetime Robertson was formally proclaimed in1853.Whilst itsexactprovenanceisnotknown, the style of the home’s gable suggests that itwas built in the early 19th century.Occupyingan erf of over 5 500 m², this well-preservedhome is now available for purchase, priced atR3,65 million. The adjoining vacant plot of2 500 m² is also for sale, at an additional R1.3million.PGP’s Robertson agent Jolette Viviers says

the home has been beautifully restored andmodernised, and has been run as a successfulguesthouse since 2010. “The split-level homeincludes a total of six bedrooms, four bath-roomsand twospaciousreceptionrooms,” shesays, “all set within amagnificent gardenwith numerous largetrees. A small river

runs through the property all year round, andits location in a quiet cul de sac creates an at-mosphere of farm-style living, even though itis actually in the heart of a peaceful suburbanarea, close to the town centre.”Whilst the exact construction date may not

be known, Viviers says the property’s historyis not a blankpage. “Wedoknow that awagon-making family, the Streichers, lived in thehouse in the 1890s, at a time when this craftwas becoming increasingly important fortransporting the fruits of the Cape’s fertilefarms to the up-country mining settlements. But, sadly, after this heyday had passed, theproperty fell into disrepair. It was purchasedon auction for the princely sum of R2 400 in1945, in a completely ruined condition. Ayoung businessman named Johan de Jongbought the property in what was at the timeconsideredaterriblyriskytransaction–localsthought he was mad to exchange a perfectly

goodmodern home for an old ruin. With a lim-itedbudget but ample enthusiasm,DeJong setabout renovating the property, preserving theoriginal doors and windows with their hand-made glass, but replacing the thatch roof anda great deal of ailing woodwork and walling.Once the project was complete, he moved hisfamily into the home and filled it with a re-nowned collection of antique furniture.”The current owners purchased the property

in 2010 and converted it into a four-star guest-house. “This makes it an appealing proposi-tionforbuyerswhowouldliketocontinuerun-ning the business,” says PGP’s MD for theBoland and Overberg regions, Annien Borg.“The tourism industry in Robertson is grow-ing steadily, thanks to its location on the sce-nic Route 62, and its growing number of popu-lar festivals such as the Hands on Harvest,Robertson Slow and the Wacky Wine Week-end.”

De Oude Opstal in Robertson – one of the two oldest properties in the town – has come onto the market.
