Breeders Award Program Green Bay Aquarium Society

Version 1.5 Last update: 11/12

Rules and Point Values for the Breeding of Fish

Purpose

• To encourage members of the GBAS to breed and share knowledge concerning the

spawning and rearing of fish.

• To recognize the achievements of society members concerning the breeding of fish.

• To promote an interest in and make available a wide variety of fish.

• To make more members active participants in the society.

Committee Responsibilities

• The Breeders Award Program Committee will consist of a Chairperson, Co-chairperson

and additional Members appointed by the chairs.

• Duties of the committee will be to maintain records, report standings for the website, help

verify spawns at meetings and also act as a guide for the placement of the species into the

BAP point schedule.

• It is the duty of a chairperson to obtain and present all awards.

Rules and Program Definitions

Eligibility:

• Breeder must be a member of the Green Bay Aquarium Society.

• Spawning must be done by the breeders own fish and the spawning must occur under the

care of the breeder.

• The name of the fish is recognized as Genus-species.

• All fish MUST be registered by scientific name. If you know that the scientific name has

changed recently, please add any of the previous synonyms to the BAP Report that you

know it used to be called by. This would be helpful in pointing your fish.

• Any member abusing the rules and regulations of the BAP will automatically be stripped

of all points awarded and will be ineligible for participation in the program for a

minimum of one year.

• All complaints must be in writing to the BAP chairperson.

• The committee will have the final word on any changes that may occur after the program

is initiated.

• On any disputed matter, the committee will meet and a vote will be taken with majority

rule. If at any time there is a tie, the chairperson will have the deciding vote.

Point Classification:

• The BAP committee will be responsible for the point classification of each fish

registered.

• When BAP points are reclassified, the point classification will not adversely affect the

points of any spawning previously awarded. The change will only affect an upwards

point change and then only with a written request from the breeder, submitted to either

the Chair or Co-chair.

• Fish are divided into four classes which denotes a point value.

o Class A fish are worth 5 points - species that can basically breed over a wide

range of conditions, all by themselves. Examples: guppy and platy.

o Class B are worth 10 points - species that can be bred easily, given specific

conditions, which are not too exacting. Examples: barbs which breed easily when

conditioned properly, zebras when conditioned and given low water level and a

marble bottomed tank or African mbuna which breed easily given alkaline water,

good food and some measure of protection against aggression.

o Class C are worth 15 points - those species which may present moderate problems

in one or more of the following areas: aggressive behavior, water chemistry,

specific diet requirements, mate selection or sexing, poor physical stamina or

disease resistance, special tank setup requirements, special care for fry. Example:

Angelfish- may present a sexing problem, have an aggressive nature, and can

present a problem providing proper brood care.

o Class D are worth 20 points - those fish that have not been bred, bred only very

rarely, or are very difficult to breed based on the severity of the problems

mentioned above. Examples: Black Ghost fish, Neons, and all marine species.

4

Awarding Of Points:

To receive points through the BAP for fresh and saltwater spawns:

• 5 fry 45 days old or older must be brought to a monthly meeting for verification and

auction.

• Marine fish/invertebrates will be class D if the fry are free swimming for 30 days and be

brought to a monthly meeting for verification.

• Corals and plants must show reasonable growth and must be brought to a monthly

meeting for verification and auction.

o The “cutting” must have reasonable growth within 60 days of original viewing.

o Floating plants and mosses; by doubling the amount, (golfball sized portion

minimum); bunch plants, by doubling the number of rooted growing stems (3 stem

minimum); runner or divided plants must have one healthy plant capable of living

independently.

o Sexual reproduction: the flowerings must be identified in full bloom attached to the

parent plant. For seeded plants, there must be a healthy seedling sufficiently

developed to be identified as the offspring of the parent plant.

o Plants must have a viable offspring or grow offshoots that develop root systems.

Acceptable methods are by cuttings, offshoots, runners, or plantlets that develop

their own root systems and can survive on their own, flowering or seed

production, and by flower pollination from the members own plant.

o If you are submitting a flowering/bloom report, a photo is acceptable proof of the

bloom should you not be able to contact the chairperson while the bloom is open.

A member can request that the HAP chairperson make a visit to their residence to

verify the bloom. You are not required to bring the plant to a meeting for auction.

• Each spawn must be registered by completing a BAP form that is signed by the participant,

Committee member and turned into the BAP Chairperson at the time of the monthly

meeting.

• The participating members are responsible for obtaining, completing and turning-in all

forms required for participation.

• Any participant in the BAP program is eligible to withhold one (1) spawn yearly from

being auctioned at the monthly meeting or annual GBAS auction and still receive points.

• Articles detailing the care, raising and spawning experiences you have had are encouraged

by the BAP committee.

• If more than one person from a family is a member, points will be awarded to the family,

or not more than one individual per household will be allowed to participate in the

program. The exception will be Junior Breeder, which can be awarded to each junior

member.

5 Additional points will be given

• Spawns which are recorded for the first time, will be awarded an additional 5 points. First

time spawns will only count by species, not by color morph, locale, or finnage.

• If a breeder elects to write an original article, with references, an additional 5 points will

be awarded. The time frame for this article will be three (3) months from the date of the

spawn.
