3 FOOD & HOME
Decorate with pallets & glass jars
Get into the habit of looking at pallets and other materials with new eyes. When one goes on a site like Pinterest, one often wonders ‘why didn’t I think of that?’. Very simple ideas are very effective, as can be seen in these few samples of using pallets and things from nature, like wild flowers and sea sand. These things cost nothing and add a rustic, down-to-earth feeling to any home.
Wall vasesCreate individual wall vases with old, weathered pallets, mason jars and clamps. Thess wall décor ideas are perfect examples of how to use ordinary stuff in very creative and beautiful ways.
Pallets are one of the biggest trends in upcycling materials for décor purposes. The creative
possibilities of creating beautiful pieces with pallets are almost endless, not to mention budget friendly.
(Article by Kath Megaw, co-author of Feeding Sense (Metz Press, 2012). Kath holds four medical qualifications including a paediatric dietetic qualification from Johns Hopkins. She frequently speaks to groups of both professionals and parents on infant and childhood nutrition, and appears on television and radio shows.Kath has been in private practice for the past 15 years and is the founder of Nutripaeds, a paediatric dietetic practice.)
The Mediterranean lifestyle and its benefitsWhen you hear the word “Mediterranean,” what do you think of?
Perhaps you envision crusty loaves of bread, tender olives, and fresh herbs. Or maybe you imagine a glass of red wine shared with friends. Better yet, you might picture yourself watching the sunset over a lush
vineyard from the open deck of a grand Tuscan villa.
All these things are character-istically Mediterranean, but they do not define the Mediterranean lifestyle. In the same way, there is no single Mediterranean diet, because the word Mediterranean is used to describe a group of more than 15 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
The Mediterranean diet trend that has recently become popular. does not prescribe a strict set of rules for foods to eat and to avoid, but rather offers guidelines for a healthy way of life. The Mediterranean diet is about more than just food – it is about living life to its fullest and being healthy. It is about eating wholesome foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, wholesome grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. And who could forget olive oil, fresh fish, and good wine?
Though the Mediterranean diet is high in dietary fat, most of the fat calories come from monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fat comes from sources like olive oil and avocados. In 2009, a study was published in the Journal of Nutrition about the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the risk for chronic disease. The results of this study suggest that an eating pattern high in plant foods and unsaturated fats,
like the Mediterranean diet, can reduce the risk for lower abdominal obesity and coronary heart disease (Romaguera et al., 2009).
Following a Mediterranean diet is easy when it comes to packing healthy lunches. You can use wholesome, natural fish products, including calamari, and herbed and peppered mackerel, which is a real hit when added to veggies or a fresh salad. For lunchboxes, yummy humus dips, pates and unprocessed cheeses add some protein to the mix. Throw in some veggie crudités and a delicious fresh fruit and you will be set up for the day. Cheeses like modified cheese and Edam cheese are gentle in flavour and loved by most children.
For those who have dairy allergies, add some drained chickpeas and beans for extra protein instead. Olives, which are high in unsaturated fats, will keep you fuller for longer and add those booster calories for fussy eaters.
Don’t forget the treats! Halva is a delicous Mediterranean delicacy. Packed with protein and calories, a small piece goes a long way to quietening that sweet tooth. Try out different flavours, such as vanilla or chocolate. (See page 6 for more lunchbox ideas.)

Lunchbox ideas from food & health celebrities
Making your child’s lunchboxes is the only way you can be sure you know what’s going in them. You can tailor them to suit their tastes and choose
good-quality ingredients to make them nutritious. Try to mix things up a bit so they aren’t eating the same old thing every day. Keep the ingredients fresh, the flavours exciting, and make different options
throughout the week to keep things interesting. For a well-balanced meal that will keep you going all day, aim for a good mix of protein
and carbohydrates with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
Savoury: A flask of home-made soup with a hunk of nice bread and a small wedge of tasty cheese, slices of home-made pizza,
quiche or frittata, or pittas stuffed with mini home-made kebabs.
Sweet: A fresh fruit salad, a tablespoon of dried fruit, stewed fruit and natural yoghurt, a slice of fruit bread, fresh fruit skewers, oaty biscuits,
home-made flapjacks, or granola bars packed with lots of lovely nuts and seeds.
Drinks: Home-made fruit smoothies, water with a wedge of fresh lemon or lime, milk, or freshly squeezed fruit juice mixed with sparkling
water. Pop a carton of 100% unsweetened fruit juice in the freezer overnight. Pack it in your child’s lunchbox first thing and by lunchtime
they will have a lovely slushy cold drink.

Patrick Holford’s lunchboxesJamie Oliver’s lunchboxesA well-planned lunchbox will energise your child, both physically and
mentally. Carbohydrate-containing foods with a lower glycemic index (GI) are the foods that supply a steady source of energy. Adding lean protein
(the size of the palm) and a little fat (such as cottage cheese) helps to prolong steady energy release.
Adding veggies and/or fruit contributes to the vitamin content. Round off the lunchbox with a tub of plain live yoghurt and a bottle of water.
Sandwich ideas: Puree vegetables such as leftover roasted vegetables to use as a sandwich spread. Add a little mayonnaise and some leftover meat and put on a low GI roll or use as a sandwich with
rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Biltong and cottage cheese on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Mashed hard-boiled egg with homemade sandwich spread on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Nut butter and honey (raw) on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. |
Tuna and mayo with lettuce and tomato on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Toasted cheese and
egg on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread.

Worcester Gymnasium Colour Athletics 2016 Blue against Red. The competition began.
WG’s colour athletics served as quite a kick-off to 2016. To accommodate the number of items on the program and the amount of entrants, organisers Mrs D. van Wyk and Mr. J van Niekerk decided to split the day in two, so that it took place on the afternoon of January 21st – with many parents being able to attend and see their kids in action - and the blessedly cool morning of the 22nd.
The red team kicked off the festivities when their fire truck swooped in, adorned with the red team’s cheerleaders. Their supporters went wild as the reds danced the field on fire. Not long after, the blue team, kitted out as inhabitants of planet Avatar, entered the field in their luxurious Jeep and vintage blue pickup leaving the blue team on the edge of their seats with a similarly exciting dance.
The cheering from both teams would continue for the duration of the meet and spirits were high, especially since the teams were never very far apart pointwise. Until the boys u.15 200m,
the blue team was ahead with only one point! Everyone watched the scoreboard closely. Ultimately the blue team triumphed, winning the athletics with a score of 2690 points, the red team coming in a close second with 2434 points. The reds did not feel bad for too long though, since they walked away with the “Bosvarkgees Trophy”. The adjudicator made a point of congratulating everyone on the most spirit-filled colour athletics WG has had in years!
Of the 1762 entries, an AMAZING 16 new records were set and, even by the standards of the ABSA table, the performance was astonishing: 85 athletes achieved above 600 points, 18 above 700 points, 3 above 800 points, 4 above 900 points, and one Bosvark, Francois Prinsloo, achieved above 1000 points. Even for those not placing in the top three, this year’s colour athletics was one of participation and Gimmies supporting and cheering on fellow Gimmies in a spirit of caring and excitement. Thank you to everyone contributing to this experience!
