W E L C O M EAs August approaches each year, our Festival Team feels more and more the weight of responsibility that comes with the stewardship of such a much-loved festival; and no more has that responsibility been pushed home than in the planning of Brecon Jazz’ landmark,

30th anniversary year.

Three decades is a long time for any event, and as we set out our plans, it was hard not to think of the original Brecon Jazz Committee, who set this journey underway in August ’84. For we wanted to honour their efforts and their vision thirty years on, with a programme that tipped its hat to the origin event and the early years, whilst striding toward exciting

horizons, and hopefully, another 30 years at least.

Thus our programme features the likes of Warren Vaché and Mike Harriès, both Brecon Originals, and Fapy Lafertin and the newly re-formed Loose Tubes, who were with us in years two and three. At the other end of the spectrum sits the much celebrated Laura Mvula, recent Grammy winner Gregory Porter and the rising Zara McFarlane, all making

their Brecon debuts.

We also start earlier than usual in 2014, with the legendary Burt Bacharach exploring his extraordinary canon of hits at the Market Hall on Thursday the 7th. Our devoted audience has long called for the return of The Captain’s Walk arena in the town centre; we were

listening, and they have their wish.

Artist in Residence Huw Warren continues his World Wide Wales series, this time collaborating with Italian clarinettist Gabriele Mirabassi, and will also debut his new suite ‘Do Not Go Gentle’, inspired by Dylan Thomas and unveiled in the poet’s centenary year.

The work of that great of British Jazz so often associated with Dylan Thomas, Stan Tracey, will be celebrated by his son Clark and friends at our Tribute to Stan Tracey concert, whilst the mighty Polar Bear return with their new sound. There is so much to tell you about, much more than this space will permit, so I must allow you to fi nd your own way through Brecon

Jazz 2014, with this programme as your guide.

Thanks for being part of our 30th year and here’s to 30 more!

Appearing alongside his band and singers, this once-in-a-lifetime performance will see Bacharach perform his most loved songs and more at the Market Hall, as the opening concert of the 30th edition of Brecon Jazz.

It was in the late 1950s that his songs started hitting the charts through performances by artists from varying strands of popular music, including Perry Como, Gene Pitney and Marty Robbins. Soon afterwards he established himself as one of the music industry’s top writer/producers, with his songs recorded by legendary artists, such as Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin.

A recipient of three Academy Awards, eight Grammy Awards (including the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award) and the 2012 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, Bacharach revolutionized the music of the 1950s and 60s and is regularly bracketed with legendary names, ranging from Cole

We are pleased to be welcoming one of the Brecon Originals back to the festival in our 30th year, where he will perform with his quintet, featuring multi-award winning reeds man Alan Barnes, recipient of the prestigious BBC Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year award in 2001 and 2006.

Michael Wollny’s trademark unpredictability and an unquenchable thirst for invention and reinvention have set him apart from his peers. One of the world’s most unique pianists, he reinvigorated the European jazz scene with his trio [em], receiving widespread critical acclaim for their 5 ACT albums, and delighted crowds the world over with their explosive live performances.

However, it is with a new trio featuring Christian Weber on bass and drummer Eric Schaefer, that we welcome Michael Wollny to Brecon Jazz 2014.

The young musicians attending the Junior Jazz Summer School at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama celebrate their week with this performance at Brecon’s Guildhall. This will be their fourth appearance at Brecon Jazz festival and many will appear as veterans at the ripe old age of 10! The young players’ enthusiasm and verve cannot fail to engage the most earnest jazz critic. Those who remember last year’s performance will know that the music may well continue beyond the confi nes of the concert platform.

Coincidentally, Brecon Jazz shares its 30th Anniversary with that of Loose Tubes, the anarchic 21-piece big band whose line-up reads like a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of a brilliant generation of musicians. The band made its Brecon Jazz debut in 1985 at the Guildhall; their fi rst gig outside of London. They returned in 1988, this time at The Market Hall, premiering a new suite commissioned especially by the festival. Having disbanded in 1990, many members (most recently Iain Ballamy, Martin France and Django Bates) became regulars at Brecon over the years in various groups and guises, but our coincidental anniversary presented the perfect opportunity to bring the newly re-formed Loose Tubes back together with Brecon Jazz in 2014.

As well as playing their greatest hits (including Yellow Hill, Shelley, The Last Word, Sticklebacks and Sunny) the band will also present new music from principal composers Chris Batchelor, Steve Berry, Eddie Parker and Django Bates.

The most famous European Gypsy musician since Django Reinhardt, Fapy Lafertin has a global reputation as one of the world’s leading acoustic musicians. The much loved Manouche guitarist from Belgium was responsible for the resurgence of the Gypsy swing style amongst musicians and audiences alike with his fi rst band Waso in the 1970s. However, his modesty, melodic sense, fi ery technique and clarity of articulation distinguish him from the plethora of other Django stylists.

Artist in residence and Swansea born composer Huw Warren presents a new jazz suite based on the poetry of Dylan Thomas. The project is the result of Warren’s lifelong interest in Thomas’ poetry, and refl ects the inherent South Walian musicality of the words. Specially commissioned for the Dylan Thomas centenary year, the piece will be touring after its world premiere at Brecon and features three of Warren’s long-term collaborators, who have all been at the cutting edge of the UK jazz scene since the 1990s.

No project linking Dylan Thomas and Jazz can fail to be infl uenced by Stan Tracey’s iconic Under Milk Wood Suite of 1965, and this suite is respectfully dedicated to Stan, who sadly passed away this year.

It was his performances as a soloist in Waso which brought Fapy Lafertin to the attention of the original Brecon Jazz programmers, who quickly made arrangements to bring the Belgian guitarist (and no mean violinist!) to the fl edgling festival. Lafertin made his Brecon bow in 1985 and became an instant festival favourite, subsequently returning many times over the years. A unique star in ascendancy, Laura Mvula’s unique orchestral pop sound – a mix of classic pop, jazz, and soul with creative and accessible twists – was acknowledged with nominations at this year’s Brit Awards, in the categories of best ‘British Breakthrough Act’ and ‘British Female Solo Artist’.

Marius Neset’s debut album Golden Xplosion led to the Norwegian saxophonist and composer becoming one of the most talked-about newcomers on the European jazz scene.

If the album hinted at Neset’s developing imagination and virtuosity on tenor and soprano saxophones, his sophomore album, Birds, only acted to confi rm him as a remarkable young talent.

With his quartet, Neset will be performing compositions with elements of Stravinsky, Charles Ives, Steve Reich, Wayne Shorter, Django Bates and Michael Brecker but most of all, Neset’s highly original sound.

Still in exile, the seven members of Imperial Kikiristan blend musical infl uences from all backgrounds, from Eastern Europe to Latin America via the Mediterranean area. They also pared themselves down to a tight New Orleans sextet to recapture the garrulous revivalist sound of their birth in 1954, with Barber’s trombone retaining its old mellow-toned, deftly phrased charm.”

- John Fordham, The Guardian

A band that stands out as one of the fi nest of its kind anywhere in the world, The Big Chris Barber Band features everything from New Orleans to blues to late 20s Ellington, played with extraordinary panache and skill; exactly what you’d expect from a bandleader with over 10,000 concerts under his belt.

Having fronted a number of bands since his career began in 1949, Chris Barber OBE is a true icon of traditional jazz in the UK. You can count on their lunchtime appearance at Theatr Brycheiniog to be an exciting performance of high quality jazz and blues which will appeal in equal measure to both the afi cionado and the newcomer.

Polar Bear returned in March with their fi rst new album in four years, and with it a sound broad in scope and potent in spirit. Their new music is at once more spacious and intense than their previous work, with drummer Sebastian Rochford, a musician known for his numerous category-defying projects, leading the band in a new direction.

Rochford has worked with a mind-boggling array of musicians, including Yoko Ono, Andy Sheppard, Paul McCartney, Patti Smith, Damon Albarn’s Africa Express project, and in The Mercury-nominated Polar Bear, completes a stellar line-up of musicians, featuring saxophonists Pete Wareham (Melt Yourself Down, Acoustic Ladyland) and Mark Lockheart (Loose Tubes, APPJAG’s Musician Of The Year in 2010), Tom Herbert (The Invisible) on bass, as well as electronics wizard/guitarist Leafcutter John.

One of contemporary jazz’s great performers, pianist John Taylor fi rst came to the attention of the jazz audience in 1969 when he partnered saxophonists Alan Skidmore and John Surman. With a groove that never quits and a voice of incredible virtuosity, Gregory Porter has broken through the buzz to become the undisputed new star of vocal jazz.

His fi rst two albums ‘Water’ and ‘Be Good’ backed up the early buzz with deserved Grammy nominations, as did his third album ‘Liquid Spirit’, his fi rst on Blue Note Records, which recently won the Best Jazz Vocal Album award at the 2014 Grammys.

A charismatic stage performer, Porter’s rapid rise has been fuelled by his irresistibly soulful voice, inspiring many critics to offer comparisons with the greatest of the greats, such as Joe Williams, Nat Cole, Donny Hathaway, and Marvin Gaye.

As fl attering as such comparisons are, Gregory Porter’s magnifi cent voice is very much his own, and we look forward to welcoming him to the Market Hall this August.

With their fi ery infectious sound grounded in the irresistible harmony of South African jazz, the Township Comets have achieved a distinctive presence on the London jazz scene. Their recent sold-out gigs at the London Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s are testimony to a growing audience for their unique South African repertoire delivered with blistering energy and commitment.

Formed by South African pianist/harmonica player Adam Glasser and trumpeter Chris Batchelor, the Comets also features virtuoso alto saxophonist Jason Yarde.

Joining the Comets will be Pinise Saul, the great South African vocalist, known as the ‘Queen of African Jazz’; a remarkable singer who fuses African traditional harmonies and contemporary rhythms to create a style that is uniquely hers.

Their repertoire for Brecon will include new arrangements of little-known masterpieces by the likes of Jonas Gwangwa, Zim Ngqawana, Tete Mbambisa and Caiphus Semenya.

Rhythms of the City is the UK’s premier samba percussion group, playing traditional songs, rhythms and dances of Brazil alongside styles that do not normally belong with heavy street percussion – afrobeat, soca, salsa, reggae funk and hip-hop.

For 14 years RotC has been the rhythm education project of London’s inspirational F-IRE Collective; it’s chief Barak Schmool taking the group to carnivals, festivals and stages round the world. Noted in Rio, they became the fi rst UK group to play their show in a Samba School (Uniao da Ilha) – an unheard-of honour. Closer to home, you may have caught them touring with Brit-pop sensations Friendly Fires, and they have even popped up alongside jazz pianists Jamie Cullum and Darius Brubeck.

Yet the group may never have existed without Brecon Jazz, as it was whilst as a roadie for Django Bates at the end of the 80s, that Barak Schmool met Brazilian percussion Godfather Bosco de Oliveira on the Loose Tubes tour bus – and, inspired by his performance, commenced lessons the following week. Three decades later Schmool returns with Rhythms of the City as the perfect party band to end the festival on The Captain’s Walk stage in the town centre.

You are cordially invited to join the Friends of Brecon Jazz

2014 is the 30th Anniversary of the Brecon Jazz Festival. The Friends of Brecon Jazz were delighted with the Festival produced by Orchard in 2013 and anticipate an even better event this year.

The Friends have been associated with the Festival since its earliest days. We are an independent group constituted to support the Festival fi nancially and promote its continuation and development. We negotiate membership benefi ts, including priority booking, maintain a year-round relationship with the promoters and other organizations involved with the Festival and keep Members informed through newsletters and our website. Members appreciate the reserved rows and priority access to concerts that come with membership.

During the Festival, we run a Clubhouse in Bishop Bevan Hall, Lion Street, in the centre of Brecon as a meeting place for Members and a welcoming place to relax during a busy weekend. Light refreshments, main meals and drinks are available throughout the weekend.

Our membership fees have been pegged again this year to £20 for single Members or £35 for two Members at the same address. To join, visit the Clubhouse during the Festival, download and complete an application form from www.friendsofbreconjazz.com or contact Arlene Jones, our Membership Secretary, at [email protected]

I hope to see you in Brecon during the Festival weekend.

Best wishes,
