When Breckenridge na-tive Howard Pardue was posthumously inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame Saturday, May 7, 2017 in Hous-ton, he joined the ranks of some of the greatest names in aviation and U.S. history.
This year’s honorees included Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who landed his US Airways flight on the Hudson River in 2009 and saved the lives of his 155 pas-sengers and crew, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States.
“It was a tremendous honor to know that he was in the same category with all these people; it’s hard for me to put it into words,” said his daugh-ter Paige Townson who attended the induction ceremony.
“Looking at the list of
people that were inducted before him, President George (H.W.) Bush , Dr. Red Duke, Howard Hughes, Tom Landry. You look at all these people, you see their names being brought up still to this day, and you’re like, ‘Gosh my father’s in that category.’ That’s just unbelievable.”
Pardue was born in Breckenridge in 1935. He joined the U.S. Ma-rine Corps in 1953 and
high performance aircraft and ultimately became an instructor, retiring with the rank of major. After leaving the military and earning his degree, Par-due ran a successful oil and gas company.
He was best known, however, as one of the most accomplished war-bird pilots in the country
conceivable aircraft of that type. He was a noted show performer and a member of the historical
Navy Legacy Flight team. He raced in the Reno National Air Races for 29 years.
Pardue was one of the visionaries in getting the Breckenridge Air Show off the ground in the 1980s and 1990s and starting the Breckenridge Aviation Museum. In 2004, he was inducted into the Experimental Aircraft Association Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the War-birds of America Hall of Fame and Honored with a memorial panel in the National Air & Space Museum’s Milestone of Flight Gallery.
Townson said that growing up, she enjoyed being around the vintage
learning about
the history of the WWII aircraft.
“Not very many people can say they’ve been able to do that, or been able to
she said. “We thought it was normal until we got older and realized that’s not normal. We were very fortunate to have that around us 24/7 and be able to get in them and
could only dream about that. It was just a normal part of our lives.”
To be selected for induc-tion to the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame someone must be either a Texan who has made extraor-dinary contributions to aviation, or a Texas avia-tor who has made an ex-traordinary contribution to America or the world
Also inducted in the 2016 Texas Aviation Hall of Fame alongside Pardue were Lt. Col. David H. De-
whurst (posthumous), a decorated B-26 squadron commander who led the crucial low-level bomb-ing run moments before troops landed on Utah Beach on D-Day; and The Connie Edwards Family, Big Spring, brothers Wil-son “Connie” Edwards, William Prior “Budo” Ed-wards, Jr., and Connie’s son, Wilson Connell “Tex” Edwards, Jr., renowned West Texas family of agriculture, warbird and stunt pilots. Patriarch Connie was lead pilot in the 1969 movie, “The Battle of Britain.” Also inducted were President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Texas-born President
Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II; Gene Kranz, NASA Flight Director for Gemini and Apollo missions, who oversaw the successful
return of the endangered
Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, USAF vet-eran, who as captain of US Airways Flight 1549, made an unpowered emergency landing in the Hudson River, sav-ing all 155 passengers and crew.
Purdue died in 2012following a crash short-ly after takeoff while flying his Grumman F8F Bearcat fighter plane near CR 151 south of the BreckenridgeAirport.
“It was such an honor to be there, to watch him get this award,” Townson said. “It just showed how much peo-ple admired his contri-bution to aviation and war birds, even four years after his death, people are still honor-ing him.”
Mr. Pardue is pictured being inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirthOf sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred thingsYou have not dreamed of – Wheeled and soared and swungHigh in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring thereI’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flungMy eager craft through footless halls of air…
