It is where all sound should originate while singing, and breathing correctly is the first step to becoming a great singer. To begin the process of a good singing breath, it is important to first relax. Check for any tension within the whole of your body, especially in the spinal area. Once all tension is released, with good singer’s posture, breathe in through the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscle that is used when inhaling into your lungs. When taking a proper breath it should almost fell as though the stomach is expanding As well, it should feel as though the muscles in the back are expanding to make room as the diaphragm inflates fully. You should be able to feel and see a rise and fall in your thorax, and that should be the only place that moves! When taking a proper breath, the shoulders should never move. If while taking a breath the shoulders do move, it means one is breathing from their chest, not their diaphragm. Singing with this breath will create a poorer tone and overall singing voice. When exhaling, simply release from the diaphragm, the lower air pressure of the outside of the body will take the air, causing a wonderful tone. Breathing is simply creating a lower pressure area in ones diaphragm, and then releasing the pressure to create music!
