Question: Have you ever had a good idea?

Was it like this?

How we did things in the past

• Co-innovation teams: achieved great things but limited by fragmented resources, duplication of efforts and lack of co-ordination

• Central teams: effective at creating critical mass of experts and innovators but limited transparency, capacity and output

How we’re doing things now

• Encourage ideas from across the organization

• Gather ideas from Idea Place and Customer Engagement

• Build prototypes with dedicated dev resources

• Validate concepts though Customer Engagement

• Implement concepts and add to products

Building prototypes

Before we go any further

• What’s the problem?

• What’s the solution?

• Who’s it for?

• Where will they use it?

• User stories and functional requirements

Start with four basic questions

Types of prototyping

Our prototyping approach depends on the complexity of the concept and the intended product:

• Throwaway - Menus

• Incremental – Dashboards

• Evolutionary – Video Players

Prototyping tools

• Lo-Fidelity wireframes using Balsamiq(and sometimes just Post-It notes and markers)

• High-fidelity mock-ups: Proto.io

• Proofs of Concept: HTML, JS, CSS, MEAN…

How do we prototype?

Identify Design Decide Build Validate Backlog

Designing prototypes

Submit ideas

Design the concept

Evaluate and decide

Build the prototype

Test and review

Add to backlog

Ideas accepted from across organization

Central innovation platform called Idea Place.

Separate categories for feature requests and for new ideas.

Feature requests aren’t prototyped.

Making this work

It’s not easy setting this up but it’s possible with:

• Senior management buy-in

• Dedicated resources to put infrastructure in place

• Change in mind-set: [insert your favourite cliché here]
