the grading, she wishes everyone the best of luck and knows that if you all try your hardest, you will do well.

In further news, though it was looking like Lee may not be here next year due to a possible job promotion and consequent move, I’m sure you will all be glad to know, that she has decided to stick around for another year. So do not fear, whilst she is currently away overseas, she will be back next year, eager to see how everyone has improved, so train hard.

Finally, from everyone here at Bribie, for those grading, we wish you the best of luck, and for those not quite ready to grade this time, train hard, the next grading will come around quicker than you think. Have a safe and happy Christmas holidays.

Mike

Firstly, thank you to all those who attended the recent training session held on Bribie, it turned out to be a fantastic day, it’s not every day you get to train on the beach (albeit it being a rather small beach due to the tide at the time).

I would like to congratulate two of the members of our senior class, Connor and Geoff, who have both just finished year 12 and have graduated from high school. We wish you both the best in your future endeavours and pursuits, be that either heading off to University or entering the work force. As some people may know, Lee, the instructor of our junior’s class has headed off to Thailand and Nepal once more to trek the Himalaya’s and visit and help out the less fortunate but none the less very happy people over there. So whilst she won’t be here for

Page 2 BREAKING GROUND

It has been another great year of training at Redcliffe. I would like to thank all of the students for their dedication and hard work throughout the year, you have all been a pleasure to teach and you all uphold the high standards I expect from my class. For a class which is small in numbers, I feel very proud of our efforts in this years tournament series with some outstanding results from both junior and senior students con-tributing to a very healthy points tally. Unfortunately we were unable to retain the Club Trophy, but there is always next year to win it back!

Our last grading of the year will be a big one for us with all students ready to grade. A big ‘Good Luck’ to Estelle, Paulina and William in their attempt at their Black Belt Grading. We all wish you well!

I would also like to thank Joe and Robert for their continued support of the Redcliffe Class throughout the year, your assis-tance is much appreciated and all the students appreciate

your time and input.

I’d also like to thank Brenton Dodds for his input into our training this year as well, we have all learnt a lot from you this year and look forward learning even more next year.

Looking forward to the New Year, it may even be a bigger and more successful one than 2009. Next year we have James eligible for his Black Belt at the end of the year. Daniel, David and Brenton eligible and in training for their 2nd Degree Black Belts. Joe and Robert will hopefully continue to train with us to help in their preparation for their 3rd Degree Black Belts. And after some delay, my own Grading for 4th Degree Black Belt. It promises to be a huge year, not only for Red-cliffe, but for IMT as well. So good luck to us all in our prepa-ration.

Jason Parker

3rd Degree Black Belt

Congratulations to all the students from the Kallangur club who entered this year’s successful tournament series and help take home the Club Trophy in 2009. A great achievement indeed given the strong competition from the other clubs. Also congratulations to all the Grand Champions especially the ones from Kallangur, a hard year of training has certainly paid off.

2009 has been a big year for the club, it’s success is only possible because of the support from the students and their families, and of course the efforts of the instructors, so a big THANK YOU to Jason, John and Luke for their contin-ued support.

So as the year draws to an end I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing every-one back and ready to kick off in 2010. Remember just because we break for 5 weeks doesn’t mean you shouldn’t con-tinue to train, practicing patterns and free sparring the family dog a great ways to keep fit over the holidays! (only jok-ing about the dog)..........

Kallangur’s break up and last “training” night this year will be on De-cember 9th starting at 5pm, finger food and fun times will be provided so just bring something to drink. (And no you don’t have to wear a uni-form)

Breaking Technique of the Season 720o Jump Spin Hook Kick

Throughout the course of 2009 I have featured a breaking technique and each break has progressively been more difficult than the last. As I did 360 Jump Back Kick in the last edition I struggled to think of something harder. That was until Rob Sandona pulled of a 720 jump spin hook kick at the All Rank Training Camp and that was that.

Well, didn’t Bribie Island turn on a glorious day for us!

What better way to do final prepara-tions for our gradings, than to spend it at the beach, first in the beautifully shaded park and then in the cool breeze on the beach, (or in some cases in the water, right brown belts!)

After the session had finished, we got down to the serious business of the social day activities.

Some brought a packed lunch, oth-ers BBQ’d and some did the traditional

fish ‘n’ chips at the beach, but after our stomachs had settled we gath-ered all the younger members of the IMT family for the treasure hunt.

Everyone came away with a good feed of lollies for the car ride home,

some probably had enough to see them through to Christmas!

After that, we all invaded the lunch area with a threat to the parents of

“Get involved or get egg on your face” as it be-came a battle ground for the egg throwing con-test. Some eggs were lightly boiled, some were as raw as the day they were laid.

By the end they were mostly broken, and showed us how difficult it really is to catch an egg!

We then followed up with some team activities like Tug-o-War, 3 legged races and egg and spoon races.

Tug-o-War became a great con-test as everyone got in-volved to try get

that edge over the op-position, the teams were too big to name, but you know who you are if you won.

The 3 legged race consisted of some heats for juniors and seniors followed by the finals. A standout win by the Daniel/Peter team saw them overtake the Brett/Mel team

only a metre from the finish line.

To keep the activities going a bit longer, we had a, egg and spoon race and for the eggs that made it to the finish line, they didn’t last long in round 2 of egg

throwing!

We then made our way to the beach for a game of dodge ball and a swim, before the day ended. It really was a Family Fun Day to re-member! We hope to do it again soon!

Whilst the importance of training is obvi-ous, the importance of the manner in which we approach our training may often be overlooked. Whilst some may feel that simply engaging in the act of training itself is enough to further our-selves as martial artists, the truth is far from this.

Like any thing in life, if our minds are not completing engaged in what we are doing, our performance and our ability to learn and improve is greatly diminished, and our training is no exception. The difference in how much we gain from our training, purely based on how focused we are, is staggering.

Like any instructor, I can always tell when a student’s mind is elsewhere dur-ing their training, they perform well be-low their level, they don’t remember instructions and they just can’t seem to get anything right, and when your mind is in that kind of state, no amount of training in the world is going to do you any good, because you won’t retain it, it just won’t sink in.

In these cases I’m reminded of an old oriental teaching, where a mind is com-pared to a cup of tea, if the cup of tea is full and you try and poor more tea into the cup, it will overflow, no more will go in. Like that cup of tea, if our minds are full of and distracted by thoughts outside of training, be it because we’ve had a bad day, or you have something pressing on your mind, no matter how much informa-tion we try and poor into your brain, no more will go in, it will all overflow. So, how can we make sure we are focused, how do we get ourselves in the right mindset to get the most from our training. The key is to empty our cups.

When you walk through the door to your training hall, do your best to let go and forget about everything else on your mind, let training be your brain’s escape from all your daily troubles. Use the warm up for instance as an opportunity to let go of everything else so that your cup is empty and ready to absorb the wealth

of information and knowledge offered in each training session. Try hard to focus on what you are doing right then and there, and you will find all you other thoughts fading into the back ground. And if you’re still having trou-ble, go spar a black belt, and you’ll soon forget about anything else.

By letting go of all our worries and men-tal burdens, for that hour or so at training, you will in fact have given your brain a

welcome rest from all those worries and pressing thoughts, and will find, that by doing so, after training, your mind will be fresher and better able to cope with

any task or problem.

So next time you come to training, re-member to forget, and empty your cup, not only will your training improve, but you’ll have a well rested, fresher mind, ready to tackle anything life throws at you.

Mike.

“The key is to empty our cups.”

Page 4 BREAKING GROUND

What a fantastic final tournament to wrap up the year! Round 3 was the round to be at, it was the final tournament for 2009 and it was where all the major awards were given out to those who supported the tournaments throughout the year.

There was good competition in the patterns division, with some rock solid performances making scoring for the judges very difficult. Some of the favourites missed out on taking first place, but would they have enough points from the previous rounds to still claim the Grand champion mantle? In most of the divisions, it really did come down to that scenario, but with consistent results throughout the year we were pleased to announce our Patterns Champions Kathy Pascoe, Tiana Kohlhase, Max Barron, Aleisha Voermanek, William Cox and Jason Parker.

The crowd pleasing Teams Demonstration event followed, and again the crowds were pleased. This division goes from strength to strength, as students be-come more confident in their abilities and help their team mates push themselves to give fun and exciting demonstrations. Top honours went to a team from Redcliffe, with teams from Bald Hills and Kallangur teams sharing the minor placings.

After a filling lunch, (thank you Redcliffe) we got into the sparring. The Black Belts set the tone with some controlled and exciting sparring to help fire up the crowd and participants. Once completed, the always popular Pee Wee division started with some experienced competitors falling to newcomer Envys Harris who made it to the final in his first ever tournament. Sadly he was to finish in 2nd place after a hard fought battle with Max Klerks.

Another standout performance was from another white belt in Junior Division 3. Up against mostly blue belts, Lachlan Burns proved that everyone can lift them-selves to a new level to beat any opponent. His amazing run, however was ended in the final by this years Grand Cham-pion Anthony Sgualdino. The Grand Champions were awarded also to Max Klerks, Talei Kohlhase, Michael Loeken, James Healy, Peter Voermanek, Jacinta Manly, Luke Robinson, Jacinta Forbes and Jason Parker.

Every student who wins a medal throughout the year earns points for their club towards the Club Trophy. Congratulations to the Kallangur class on taking out the Perpetual Club Trophy for 2009 and well done to everyone at Kallangur for your amazing performances this year. Thank you everyone who supported the tournaments throughout the year. Thank you parents, instructors, black belts, caterers and of course the competitors, you all make the tournaments a success and we look forward to your continued support in 2010.

2009 is nearly at an end as far as Tae Kwon do classes are concerned, but that doesn’t mean we should just stop our training completely. We should really try to do some form of exercise over the Chrissy break to keep our fitness levels up

so as we don’t start the new year with to much hard work to do to get back to our peak. While not suggesting that we need to run a marathon every second day, try to

consciously do at least a little bit each day. For those really stuck for ideas, try doing your patterns a couple of times a week and surprise your instructor with how good they are when class resumes.

I would like to again thank all IMT members for once again making my year another really pleasurable and satisfying one. It is seeing you guys learning, performing, achieving your goals and enjoying what you are doing that give the instructors their greatest thrills. You guys doing the best YOU can do is what fills us with pride.

To all the newcomers to IMT this year – welcome to our family.

Remember you will only get something out it if you are prepared to put something in.

Wishing you all a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

it came to sparring with the knives, also learnt how much

they are yet to learn!

The Chief Instructor then led us into the painful world of weights training with a fitness circuit that made our muscles feel like

jelly.

After Lunch, The 1st Grades had a Black Belt Assessment, while the rest of the students learnt a new pattern. It will normally take you over 15 years of training to be able to learn a 3rd Dan Pat-tern, but we like to keep camps special and everyone got an early opportu-nity to learn something very special.

More Defence was on the agenda, but this time in plain clothes, using real world meth-ods to defend yourself. They aren’t always nice, but they do always work! There

was a lot of grass stains and stretched shirts after this session and it was great to see everyone willing to get dirty!

The aptly named Mount Glori-ous was again the location of 2009’s All Rank Train-ing Camp.

The idea behind camps is to give all students a chance to do training they either have never done before, or won’t be doing for many years. This years was in abun-dance of new and unique train-ing sessions designed to get the mind, body and soul a full workout.

Training started on Friday night with a fantastic session on tim-ing and how to use it to defeat your opponents guard. Every-one was delighted and annoyed to learn these fantastic bits of information that Black Belts have been using on them for so long!

Saturday started bright and early with an invigorating jog to the wa-terfall (with a bit of off the track bushwalk-ing) to help get the body started. Af-ter breakfast we covered Set Sparring to help recap Friday’s session, and we then jumped into the Knife Defence session. All Students learnt a vari-ety of ways to defend them-selves against attack, but when

ring, leaving the evening to en-joy a bit of dinner and some roasted marshmallow on the bon fire.

Sunday was another early start with a stretching session to try work

out the strains and pains of Saturday. After breakfast, stu-dent were put to the

test in the Pad Work session, performing double and triple jump kicks and powerful kick-ing combos.

This led the way into the board breaking session, where all student got to try either board break-ing for the first time or some of their fa-vourite breaks and

even some extreme breaking for the black belts.

To finish off the weekend, we put everyone through their paces with a fitness circuit and free sparring. We like to leave all who attend the camps full of knowledge but running on empty.

Can’t wait for next year!

Whilst the Christmas holidays bring about the end of classes, it doesn’t mean your training has to stop. It’s good to take a break but a little bit of light training here and there can go a long way to ensure you’re ready for the new year. Going over your pat-terns will help you remember them and some light stretching will help maintain all the hard work you did to increase your flexibility this year.

Don’t forget to just go out and have FUN doing your favourite part of Tae Kwon Do, whether it be practicing kicks, shadow boxing to simulate sparring or even fitness.

We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing eve-ryone next year. Joe and Robert Sandona

We would like to start by wishing everyone the best of luck at the grading today, especially those at-tempting their 1st Degree Black Belt. We would also like to thank all the students at Bald Hills for their dedi-cated training throughout the year.
