Transcript of Bread for the World - thirdpresbyterian.org · Scott Stratton-Smith, piano Blest are they, the poor...
God’s willingness to become one of us in the person of
Jesus Christ is evidence of God’s deep and abiding love
for us. We understand God’s love through Jesus: “We
know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and
we ought to lay down our lives for one another” (1 John
3:16). Scripture shows us that Jesus was compassionate
to all people, especially the widow, the orphan, the
stranger, the hungry, the poor—those most vulnerable in
society. Jesus loved all people, rich and poor, and actively
cared for those in need. He urged his disciples to do the
same, to reflect God’s loving nature.
As followers of Christ, we can reflect Jesus’ love and
compassion. Jesus calls us to respond to the reality of
hunger and poverty in our world. We can model Jesus’
care for vulnerable people we encounter, whether they
live next door, in the next state, or across the world.

Preparation for WorshipWe come to worship from a busy and noisy world. As we prepare to offer ourselves in praise
and adoration of God, it is important that we step back from our preoccupations and focus
our thoughts on God. We ask that you please turn off all cell phones and pagers. As the
music begins this morning, please take time to become more aware of the continuing
presence of God.

CALL to WORSHIP from Micah 6:1-8
LEADER: With what shall I come before the Lord,
and bow myself before God on high?
PEOPLE: Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings,
with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased
with thousands of rams,
with tens of thousands of rivers of oil?
LEADER: God has told you, O mortal, what is good:
PEOPLE: and what does the Lord require of you,
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
HYMN 366 “Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me” ST. CATHERINE
PRAYER
of CONFESSION Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess
that we have tried to hide from you, for we have
done wrong. We have lived for ourselves, and apart
from you. We have turned from our neighbors, and
refused to bear the burdens of others. We have
ignored the pain of the world, and passed by the
hungry, the poor, and the oppressed.
In your great mercy forgive our sins and free us
from selfishness, that we may choose your will and
obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our
Savior. Amen.
SILENT PRAYER
KYRIE
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Friends, believe the good news.
PEOPLE: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

(10:45) Covenant Singers
Miranda Owen, oboe; Rosie Curren, violin
Scott Stratton-Smith, piano
Blest are they, the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of
God. Blest are they, full of sorrow, they shall be consoled.
Rejoice! and be glad! Blessed are you, holy are you, Rejoice!
and be glad! Yours is the kingdom of God! Blest are they, the
lowly ones, they shall inherit the earth. Blest are they who
hunger and thirst; they shall have their fill. Rejoice! and be
glad!... Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs.
Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God! Rejoice!
and be glad!... Blest are they who seek peace; they are the
children of God. Blest are they who suffer in faith, the glory
of God is theirs. Rejoice! and be glad!... Blest are you who
suffer hate, all because of me. Rejoice and be glad, yours is
the kingdom; shine for all to see. Rejoice! and be glad!...

AFFIRMATION
of FAITH Brief Statement of Faith, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God.
Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good
news to the poor and release to the captives,
teaching by word and deed and blessing the
children, healing the sick and binding up the
brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving
sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the
gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and
sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of
human pain and giving his life for the sins of the
world. God raised this Jesus from the dead,
vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin
and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.
Amen.

ANTHEM “How Dear to Me Is Your Dwelling” Bruce Neswick
(10:45)
How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts! My soul
has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart
and my flesh rejoice in the living God. The sparrow has found
her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her
young, by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King
and my God. Happy are they who dwell in your house! They
will be always praising you. Happy are the people whose
strength is in you, whose hearts are set on the pilgrim’s way.
For one day in your courts is better than a thousand in my
own room, and to stand in the threshold of the house of my
God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked. Happy are they
who put their trust in you!

you I groaned, and bled, and died, and rose and triumphed,
too. With trembling faith, and bleeding heart, Lord, I accept
thy love: ‘Tis a rich banquet I have had, What will it be above?

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Eternal God, as we have been fed at your table and

and hope with a world in need. We pray with

MINISTRY, SERVICE, AND
FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Focus on Hunger
Third Church Youth will be atthe doors following worship toreceive your donations of cash, checks and non-perishable food
items. Your offerings will support
Cameron Community Ministries and
Third Church Hunger Ministries.
Along with the Souper Bowl of Caring,
today provides us an opportunity to
focus on Third Church’s diverse and
important hunger programs. The year
2013 was a productive one for us. We
are grateful for church members and
the East Avenue Grocery Run for
significant contributions to our Hunger
programs.
It took about 15 volunteers per
week to help the Food Cupboard
serve 2,717 households last year,
up slightly from 2012. Our
expenses for the year were
$16,543. We received two one-
time grants in 2013 that offset
our expenses, so we anticipate
more need for Third Church
funds in 2014.
Over 200 volunteers helped
Dining Room Ministry serve more
than 3,600 meals in 2013, an
average of nearly 70 meals per
Saturday. Our expenses were
$8,677 or about $2.41 per meal.
We are blessed with volunteers
from our church Boy Scout Troop
and others from the community
who make DRM a success.
Our Christmas Basket Ministry
program adopted 72 families this
past December. Our expenses
were $1,750 for this program in
2013. Donations received from
church members covered the cost
of this program.
Third Church hunger programs could
not be the success they are without the
incredibly faithful and generous
contributions of time, money, energy
and love from you and our friends in
the community.
