I would like to take this opportunity to

introduce Brayton Academy to you and give

you an idea of the values and principles that

guide us in the education of our students.

Being part of Rodillian Multi Academy Trust

means that Brayton Academy has a wealth

of experience and expertise to use in striving

to ensure that we can take our place

amongst the best secondary schools within

the country.

We want our students to leave us with GCSE

results that will provide them with the most

choices in life. Research shows the longer

we stay in education of some sort, the

happier we are and the more earning power

we have. We want to empower students

to choose their own direction in life. Our

expectation is for all our students to have the

possibility of entry into the top universities and

participation in fulfilling careers.

In order to get to that point at the end of

Year 11, our students will grow up into young

adults from children age 11. In year 7 we

endeavour to complete a smooth transition

from primary school. We do this in the last 4

weeks of the summer term so that our new

students can breathe more easily over the

summer holidays, confident that they know

what to expect in this most important part of

their education so far.

We give a broad and balanced experience

for students in Year 7. We are conscious that

we need to build upon the teaching in Year

6 and we provide a stimulating curriculum

that provides an excellent foundation for

future years. At the end of September

our Year 7 students take part on their first

Resilience camp. Two nights of camping and

3 days of activity that start using those skills

they have formed in the first 7 – 8 weeks of

Resilience. We value the ability to work hard

and practice. In doing so we believe with the

right conditions most students can achieve

a great deal in most subjects. Our curriculum

in Year 7 has 5 lessons per week of Resilience,

time to find out about how we learn and

that we can achieve a great deal with these

skills. We promote a way of thinking that uses

a growth mind set. Year 7 finishes with an

opportunity to take part in another resilience

camp but this time in the Ardeche region of

France: a seven night stay that includes a

38km kayak trip, mountain biking, high ropes

and of course speaking French.

This is an exciting time for Brayton Academy

and the local community as we provide the

best education and opportunities for our

young people. We want you and your family

to be an integral part of our successes.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce Brayton Academy and give you an idea of the values and principles that guide us in the education of our students. Being part of Rodillian Multi Academy Trust means that Brayton Academy has a wealth of experience and expertise which has enabled us take our place amongst the best secondary schools. OFSTED recently judged Brayton Academy to be ‘outstanding’ in all areas and together with our exam results we feel proud to take our place as the best school in the area and one of the best in North Yorkshire.

We want our students to leave us with GCSE results that will provide them with the most choices in life. Research shows the longer we stay in education of some sort, the happier we are and the more earning power we have. We want to empower students to choose their own direction in life. When Rodillian Multi Academy Trust was asked by the Department for Education to improve the school our aim has been to provide the best education and opportunities for the young people of this community. I feel as though we have done this and want to continue to improve further. I invite you and your family to be an integral part of our successes.

Andy Goulty as the CEO of the Rodillian Multi

Academy Trust, initially he was the headteacher at

the highly successful Rodillian Academy. He was

approached by the Prime Minister’s office and the

Department for Education to run Brayton Academy:

a school which serves the communities of Brayton,

Selby Town and the villages south within North

Yorkshire. The confidence entrusted to the trust was

derived from the successes at four other schools:

Rodillian Academy, Featherstone Academy,

BBG Academy and Southway.

Since our Trust was established, it has grown by

taking on underperforming schools to develop

them to beyond national standards. In 2016 two of

our academies gained an Educational Outcomes

Award for exceptional student attainment from the

SSAT, and one for being in the top 10% in the country

for student progress. Southway is also the highest

achieving alternative provision in the entire country.

The Trust’s key motivation is to provide the best

possible academic experience in every one of our

academies. We are highly aspirational at all levels,

but go beyond academic success to develop

character and resilience in each of our students,

enabling them to become well-rounded citizens and

promoting the best outcomes in everything that they

do. The Rodillian Multi Academy Trust is a special

and high achieving trust, to which every one of its

students and staff can feel proud to belong.

Our schools are all clustered within 30 minutes of one

another, allowing us to provide cross trust support

and opportunities for our students and staff.

The key features which underpin our philosophy on

education are:

• That all students have the highest aspirations;

• To deliver an innovative and engaging

curriculum which provides independent school

opportunities within a secondary context;

• A commitment to divergent teaching,

supported by our belief in teacher freedom.

This provides a stimulating and varied learning

environment, where one size does not fit all;

• Traditional values of behaviour, supported by

our Positive Discipline system which enables

teachers and pupils alike to focus on learning.

• A mindset for growth, which supports both staff

and students in their pursuit of excellence

• A dedication to educational development

based on highly selective methodology and

research based enquiry.

Our Curriculum

Students have the chance to select options in year

9 from a range of GCSE subjects that they may be

interested in taking in years 10 and 11. These courses

are designed as a taster for a year, in order to explore

subjects in an introductory manner. In year 9 it is

compulsory to study an EBacc option from History

and Geography. All students will also study French

to GCSE level in order to give them the very best job

opportunities and access to the top universities.

We have also introduced a period 7 to extend

the school day for extra-curricular activities or for

compulsory extra lessons for small groups of students,

particularly in Key Stage 4. This enables students to

gain extra support when there is an identified need.

We have a duty to prepare our students for external

examinations in the current education system. We

start this early in year 7 with a structured assessment

and examination calendar. We equip our students the

skills and examination techniques required to succeed.

This regular assessment determines intervention and

movement between groups. Differentiated teaching

ensures that students of all abilities benefit from

comprehensive intervention strategies and receive

additional support and challenge from staff.

The Resilience Curriculum and Growth MindsetThe Rodillian Multi Academy Trust

is gaining national recognition for

our Resilience Curriculum that we

run in Key Stage 3 from the moment

that students enter the school.

Encompassed in this course is our belief

in a growth mindset. We believe that

intelligence is far from fixed or inherited

and it is an area in which we can all

improve if we work hard and learn from our

mistakes. Intelligence is something that can

be developed. We encourage our students

to experiment and take risks in their learning; to

establish an environment where failure is just the

start on the road to success.

In year 7, in their Resilience lessons are based

around the ‘6 R’s’: Reasoning, Reflection, Resilience,

Resourcefulness, Responsibility and Respect.

This work develops young people who can positively face

the challenges of the new examination system and their life

beyond school.

An innovative curriculum Our six period day allows us flexibility to offer a wide range of subjects for all

students. During your child’s time at Brayton Academy they can expect to study

a range of subjects including:

• Maths

• English

• Science

• Computer Studies

• History

• Geography

• French

• Resilience (KS3)

• Business Studies

• Product Design

• Art

• Music

In years 8 and 9 we have introduced ‘Applied Resilience’ for three hours on Wednesdays.

This allows students to opt for a new experience to gain skills and mastery in an area

previously not experienced. Some of this year’s options are Russian, horseriding, cake

decorating, theatre skills, mixed sports at the leisure centre. We also host a Netball and

Rugby Academy where students receive intensive coaching from experienced coaches

after school and during Applied Resilience, this again encourages mastery and a chance

to compete with the very best schools in the region.

The academy provides a calm and ordered learning

environment where students and staff work with

mutual respect. The building mixes traditional and

modern classroom environments. We are investing

heavily in improving the building and in advanced

technology in order to support the delivery of

high-quality learning, and are excited as Brayton

Academy continues to grow and develop.

Positive DisciplinePositive Discipline is the cornerstone of our Trust and

the reason for its continued success and expansion.

Without good behaviour in our schools we cannot

teach and, therefore, students cannot learn. PD also

enables us to reward good progress, behaviour and

outstanding work. As a Trust, we organise annual

reward trips and awards to celebrate student success.

The majority of students are well-mannered and have

a positive attitude to learning. PD ensures that the

possible behaviour of a small minority of students does

not interfere with the progress of others. This enables

our teachers to teach and students to feel safe,

happy and able to learn.

Parent PartnershipWe understand the importance of working with

parents and carers in order to ensure that our students

enjoy their time with us at Brayton and leave us with

the best possible examination results. On a day to

day basis, the student planner allows for you to see

your child’s progress in school, we encourage you to

engage with your child to discuss their lessons and

learning as much as possible.

You will also be invited into school

at strategic times so that we can

help you to support your child in

their learning.

Brayton Academy Pastoral Support and SafeguardingWe are aware that secondary schools

can sometimes seem overwhelming

after primary schools. We pride ourselves

on our personal approach to students

and ensure that each individual is given

the opportunity to excel.

Year 7 students are supported with this

transition through an early start date in July

in order to break down nervous anticipation

over the summer holiday. Year 7 students also

have a separate lunchtime throughout the

year, we find that this allows the younger students

to grow in confidence in school. There is a robust

and supportive pastoral team at Brayton, where

individual students are cared for by their Form Tutors,

Year Directors as well as the Director of Safeguarding.

Each child is valued and supported.

The safety and welfare of our students is paramount to us as

an academy. Procedures for safeguarding children are in line

with the North Yorkshire County Council guidelines and policy.

Pastoral staff act as trained Designated Senior Persons and all staff

receive regular training in safeguarding.
