Because of the impossibility of covering the large number and wide variety of allied health professions and occupations, the recommended publications are focused primarily on the educational programs listed and described in the AMA's Health Professions Education Directory, 1997- 1998, plus physical therapist and medical secretary. Some programs do not have their own specific literatures. Books and journals are categorized by subject; the book list is followed by an author/editor index, and the subject list of journals by an alphabetical title listing. Items suggested for initial purchase (160 books and 31 joumals) are indicated by asterisks. To purchase the entire collection of books and journals (1998 subscriptions) would require an expenditure of about $29,180. The cost of only the asterisked items totals $11,390. The list of recommended allied health books and jour-nals that follows is the eighth version of an article orig-inally published in 1984 by Alfred N. Brandon and me[1]. We continued to update this work biennially untilhis death in July 1996. At that time we had just re-turned the corrected galley proofs for the 1996 updateof the allied health list. dates of the nursing and the allied health lists. Hishelp saved me hours of time that I was able to devoteto the book and journal selection process. I have care-fully considered all of the input-pro and con-that Ihave received from allied health faculty, librarians, publishers, and vendors, but the final choice of booksand journals is mine based on my opinion. All of the"Brandon/ Hill Selected Lists" have always been basedon opinion; there is no secret scientific formula.

Alfred Brandon and I became interested in alliedhealth literature as a result of the success of our "Se-lected List of Nursing Books and Journals," which wepublished in 1979 [2]. We received many requests fromlibrarians and allied health faculty who wanted toknow if we could make up a comparable list for alliedhealth literature. Nothing like it was available, andthese people perceived that the need was great. Duringthe early 1980s, allied health programs that tradition-ally had been hospital-based were beginning to betransferred to academic settings-four-year colleges,two-year junior colleges, and community colleges. Many persons in these libraries had little or no knowl-edge of acquiring allied health literature. We became more and more aware that informational

resources for allied health personnel, the largest seg-ment of the health care work force in the United States, were not only sparse in academic libraries but also inhealth sciences libraries, large and small, as well. Whatwas needed was a selected list of allied health booksand journals to assist inexperienced selectors in a va-riety of libraries.

In the fall of 1981, we made a commitment to adda third selected list (allied health) to our project. Al-fred Brandon felt that rounding up the literature ofallied health would be worthwhile and challenging; hewas correct! Before we could do anything, we had todefine our scope of coverage because there was no uni-versally accepted definition of the term "allied health."Even today the definition is elusive, and many peopleseem to have ceased hunting for it.

Because this list may be used by individuals not fa-miliar with previous versions, it might be helpful toreview the parameters that we used to determine sub-ject coverage and intended purpose. Most of thesources that we consulted did not designate autono-mous health professions such as medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, or optome-try under the allied health "umbrella." Some sourcesincluded nursing as an allied health profession whileothers did not. We already had compiled a list of nurs-ing literature, so for our purposes, we added nursingto the autonomous group. After excluding those eightgroups, we were still facing over 200 discrete alliedhealth professions and occupations ranging from acutecare to chronic care.

In order to make this project realistic, we decidedto compile a list of books and journals that would pre-

dominantly support the twenty-six educational pro-grams then accredited by the AMA Committee on Al-lied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) andlisted in the Allied Health Education Directory [3]. Be-cause of numerous requests, we also included the lit-erature of allied dental personnel and medical secre-taries. Currently, the Health Professions Education Direc-tory, 1997-1998, lists forty allied health programs(fourteen more than in the 1982 Directory) but theAmerican Medical Association no longer accreditsthem. Instead they are accredited by thirteen differentagencies. The increase in the number of programs doesnot mean that there were fourteen that we did not-ad-dress. Some of them were already in the allied healthlist and other specific programs were covered by thebroad subject breakdown that we used in this list.

In some instances, a distinct literature for a programin allied health does not exist. For example eventhough there are now a few books written for the phy-sician assistant, the program still relies heavily onstandard medical texts and journals and books in thebasic and behavioral sciences. Programs for surgicaltechnologists are supported heavily by both periop-erative nursing and surgical literature. Books and jour-nals to augment an allied health literature collectionin the fields of nursing and medicine can be found inthe latest "Brandon/Hill Selected Lists" [5, 6]. Assem-bling a dental library collection has been made mucheasier by a recently published list of recommendedbooks and journals in clinical dentistry [7].We added Nutrition to the 1988 allied health list for

the first time because of frequent user requests. Themajor event of the 1980s affecting allied health was theNational Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine(NAS/IOM) eighteen-month study on the role of alliedhealth personnel in health care delivery [8]. In thisstudy, ten groups of allied health personnel-clinicallaboratory technologists and technicians, dental hy-gienists, dietitians, emergency medical personnel, medical record administrators and technicians, occu-pational therapists, physical therapists, radiologicaltechnologists and technicians, respiratory therapists, and speech-language pathologists and audiologists-were selected. These groups were chosen because theywere large and well-known, spanned the spectrum ofautonomy, and included practitioners who worked ina variety of health care settings. We had covered allbut one of the ten groups in our allied health list, speech pathology and audiology. In view of the NAS/IOM study, we extended our coverage to includeSpeech Pathology/ Audiology. From the preceding narrative, it is easy to realize

that the list of allied health publications recommendedhere is not the be-all and end-all authority in alliedhealth collection development. However, it is a con-venient guide for setting up such a collection or up-dating an already existing one. It also provides a quick

source for determing what is being published, es-pecially in books. The choice of books and journals hasresulted from my having monitored the allied healthliterature for the past two years.

However, every allied health publication has notpassed over my desk. Books or journals might be miss-ing from this list simply because I did not see them. The amount of allied health literature that I do see istied very tightly to publisher participation. If I wereasked to set up a book and journal collection for alliedhealth personnel, the titles I have listed here representthe collection I would have purchased at the time Isubmitted this manuscript. My choices may have beendifferent a month or even a week later.

I have attempted to assemble a well-balanced col-lection of allied health books and joumals geared spe-cifically to allied health personnel whenever possible. In selecting publications for the allied health list, Itried to evaluate each title, first as I thought AlfredBrandon would have-and then from my point ofview and tried to reconcile the two. Most of the pub-lications originate in the United States, but there arealso some British and Canadian publications. As thename of this list implies, only books and joumals inprint format have been evaluated.

All of the books that I have chosen have been pub-lished from 1989 through 1998; only one was pub-lished before 1990, and 92% from 1995 to date. I havepicked out the most current books available becauserapidly changing technology has a strong impact onmany allied health professions and occupations. As aresult, older books do not appear in this list, but theymay have appeared in earlier versions. Nearly 40% ofthe titles in the 1998 book list have been changed fromthe 1996 one. The joumals remain relatively stablefrom list to list. There have been minor changes in thejoumal list for the Emergency Medical Technology andSpeech Pathology/Audiology sections. I realize that"new" does not necessarily mean "better," but currentliterature has a priority in this setting. The bibliographic and price information quoted here

is as accurate as I could obtain at the time the manu-script was submitted, but price increases are likelyover time. Based upon the prices that I have, it wouldcost approximately $29,180 to purchase the entire col-lection of books and journals. The 410 books cost about$19,500, and the 78 journal subscriptions for 1998amount to $9,680. For books from publishers that havedual pricing (list/net or retail/net or something sim-ilar), I have quoted the higher prices. The total pricefor the entire collection or for the individual category"Physical Therapy" includes only the specific book cit-ed in Item 242, not the entire series. Whenever memberand nonmember prices exist, I have used higher non-member prices. Other prices are publishers' traditionallist prices. Subscription prices are quoted at institu-tional rates; sometimes subscription prices for individ-

uals are somewhat less than for institutions. The av-erage price per book title is $47.59, and the averageprice of a 1998 journal subscription is $124.17.

Items for initial purchase are indicated by asterisksbefore the titles. To purchase only the asterisked items(160 books and 31 journal subscriptions) would costapproximately $11,390-$8,000 for books and $3,390 forjournal subscriptions. Due to the diversity of the sub-jects covered in this list, most people will probably notwant to purchase all of the publications but insteadwill use the list selectively for subjects pertinent totheir particular situations. Table 1 shows the approxi-mate cost for each subject section of the book list.Overall total figures and average costs for this list arenot as meaningful as those that we compile for thesmall medical library and for nursing, because it is notlikely that all these allied health publications wouldever be purchased totally as a collection. This list rep-resents the literature of several professions, not justone. As I have mentioned, when Alfred Brandon and I

first compiled the list of recommended allied health

books and journals nearly fourteen years ago, therewere no up-to-date selection guides . Aside from thisone, the same situation exists today. In 1995, DoodysNursing and Allied Health Review Quarterly began pub-lication; it reviews publications of interest to nursingand allied health personnel, but only about 20% of thecontent relates to allied health [9]. Last year, it wasgratifying to find several articles on the mapping ofallied health literature. These bibliometric studiescame about as a result of the Nursing and AlliedHealth Resources Section of the Medical Library As-sociation creating a Task Force on Bibliographic Accessfor the Allied Health Literature. Five professions werestudied: health education, physical therapy, radiologictechnology, respiratory therapy, and speech-languagepathology. More such studies are in process. This re-search should provide a better understanding of bib-liographic access to potential allied health core litera-ture [10-15]. Another use study of speech-pathologyand audiology periodicals was carried out at IllinoisState University [16]. These papers reflect a growinginterest in the literature of allied health by health sci-ences literarians. The future of allied health will bevery different from the present. Little has been doneto understand and mobilize this massive workforce. The current status and future potential of allied healthin the United States have been brought together in the"Report of the National Commission on AlliedHealth" [17]. It examines allied health issues relativeto education, workforce supply and demand, work en-vironments, licensure, accreditation, research, practice, government intervention, and managed care. The books in this list are arranged according to thir-

ty-five broad subject headings followed by an author/editor index. When a book has more than two authorsor editors, the notation "[and others]" has been madeafter the name of the senior author or editor. In theauthor/editor index only the names of the senior per-sons have been included; coauthors and coeditors havenot. If the name of an original author or editor is aninitial part of the title, it has been included.New editions scheduled for mid- and late-1998 pub-

lication, which have tentative prices and release dates, have been considered as published. If I did not knowthe price or a tentative publication date for a scheduled1998 book, it has been designated by the phrase "inpreparation." For updated editions scheduledthroughout 1999, I have listed the current availableedition followed by a note that a new edition is sched-uled for 1999. Because of mergers, takeovers, and thechanging of publishers' names, the imprint on thebook may not necessarily be the publisher who is dis-tributing it. As a matter of course, I have routinelycited the publisher from whom the book is availabe inthe United States. Journals are arranged according totwenty broad subject headings, followed by an alpha-betical title list.

All three "Brandon/Hill" lists (allied health, smallmedical library, and nursing) will continue to be up-dated between published biennial revisions in A MajorReport, a quarterly newsletter put out by Majors Sci-entific Books that was originally compiled and editedby Alfred Brandon for many years [18]. My late coau-thor and I have held to the premise that the literaturesupporting the largest segment of the health care in-dustry must become a substantial part of the biomed-ical collection and be acquired in a comparable man-ner extended to medicine, nursing, and dentistry. Ihope that my continuing to compile this list of rec-ommended books and journals will likewise continueto be a guide in upgrading allied health collections.
