Dear Friends,

What have Archbishop Justin Welby and a Texan mother of two who recently posted

a video of herself on Facebook wearing a Chewbacca face-mask got in common? I

was about to go on holiday when I wrote this. After that opening line, you may be

thinking: “Rick clearly needed that break ...” But actually, they do share something,

and it’s about identity.

In early April it was revealed that Justin’s Welby’s father was not Gavin Welby, as he,

his mother, and the world had hitherto assumed, but the late Sir Anthony Montague

Browne. This could have been a Fleet Street field-day: the press love nothing more

than a whiff of scandal around a cleric, and here was something massive on the top

man! Even better, the story involved Welby’s parents struggling with alcoholism. If

Justin had been defensive, said it was no one else’s business, or asked solemnly for

privacy, there could have been a media feeding-frenzy, I think. What he said instead

was this:

‘This revelation has, of course, been a surprise, but in my life ... I have had far worse.

I know that I find who I am in Jesus Christ, not in genetics, and my identity in him

never changes. ... At the very outset of my inauguration service [as Archbishop]

three years ago, Evangeline Kanagasooriam, a young member of the Canterbury

Cathedral congregation, said: “We greet you in the name of Christ. Who are you,

and why do you request entry?” To which I responded: “I am Justin, a servant of

Jesus Christ, and I come as one seeking the grace of God to travel with you in His

service together.” What has changed? Nothing!’

It was a remarkably gracious response, and a profoundly Christian one. Faced with

the question, “Who are you?”, that was his answer.

Six weeks later in Texas a “stay-at-home mom” (to use her own words) called

Candace Payne went to her local Kohls’ department store and bought herself a Stars

Wars toy. It was a Chewbacca face mask that makes a Chewbacca growling noise

whenever the wearer opens their mouth. Before going home, she made a video –

sitting in her car, on her phone – and uploaded it to Facebook. The film is four

minutes long, and all it really amounts to is Candace explaining what she bought,

that it is hers, not her kids’(!), then showing us how it works. This makes her laugh.

The more she laughs, the more the mask makes the Chewbacca noise, and that

makes her laugh more, so the mask makes the noise more, and ... she just laughs.

(It’s viewable at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3yRv5Jg5TI - or just search for

“Chewbacca mask” and you’ll find her soon enough!)

Page 4: BRANCEPETH - St Brandon

This obviously tickled others, as within a few days the video had been watched by

over 140 million people, and Payne was invited onto Good Morning America, ABC

News, Saturday Night Live, and more. Instant stardom. (Of course, people then

started digging up information about her family’s personal struggles – that’s life.)

In the midst of all this, in an interview for the website Buzzfeed, Candace was asked

about the joy she seems to have in the video, and where it comes from. She replied:

‘You wanna know something, in all honesty? ... When you really know who you are,

you don’t have to impress anyone, not even yourself; you can laugh at yourself.’ The

interviewer pressed on: ‘But it’s tough for a lot of people to get there; so what do

you think helped you get there?’

She replied: ‘You want me to give you the real, honest answer? ... The truth is that

my relationship with Jesus Christ has completely made me who I am, because he's

told me who I am. And once you know that you're loved by God ... you don't have to

impress anybody else, because you've got the one opinion that matters. So I know

you probably weren’t expecting that answer from a funny girl with a Chewbacca

mask!’

So Candace Payne and Justin Welby, two very different people, thrust into the

media spotlight for very different reasons, seem to share a strikingly similar

understanding about their fundamental sense of self.

In 1976 Pete Townshend of The Who wrote a song which became the title track of

their album, Who Are You? It came – apparently – partly out of a fear that he was

losing his way, forgetting what his music was meant to be about. The chorus runs:

‘Who are you? Who, who, who, who? I really wanna know: who are you? Who, who,

who, who?’

It’s a question we all return to, sometimes painfully at difficult moments in our lives:

who, really, am I?

Very best wishes as ever,

Rick

PS Wouldn’t you like one of those masks?! Strangely enough, they’re sold out right

now!

FRIDAY 1st JULY, 2016

Performances at 2.00 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

in the Village Hall.

The film lasts approximately 80 minutes, plus an introduction.

July 1st 1916 marks the 100th anniversary of the first day of the

Battle of the Somme – one of the worst of the Western Front WW1

campaigns. Four men from Brancepeth and Wooley Colliery were killed

on that day.

To commemorate this, the Archives and History Group are arranging

two showings of the Battle of the Somme film.

This is a documentary/propaganda film produced by the Government at

the time and released nationwide on 21st August 1916. It was seen by

huge audiences in the UK, barely a month after the events it depicted.

Cinema-goers hailed it as an opportunity to see the reality of the

Western Front for the first time, and to share the experiences of the

soldiers who were fighting there.

Admission is free but donations towards the cost of hiring the hall and

overheads would be appreciated.

“If the exhibition of this picture all over the world does not end

War, God help civilisation.”

“The most important and imposing picture of the war.
