BEAm Bramley Elderly Action newsletter Spring 2014 Inside 1 Bramley Elderly Action 0113 236 1644 www.bramleyea.org.uk In March 1994, Sheila Mahon - working for Bramley Parish Community Project - called a meeting at St Peter’s to see if there was support to set up a new organisation to help local older people. From this meeting Bramley Elderly Action was born. Since then we have put on over 10,000 activities, responded to around 15,000 requests, carried out over 4,000 home visits, made over 100,000 return transport journeys and attracted almost £3 million in funding, all done with the voluntary help of around 500 individuals. We plan to use our 20 th year to celebrate BEA’s achievements and to prepare ourselves for the next 20 years. Celebrations will include a party and recognition to long-serving volunteers. We also want to put together a collection of people’s favourite memories of BEA. Once collected we would like to archive them and share some, in the newsletter and the website. Please contact BEA Communications Co-ordinator Rob Cook if there is anything you would like to share. Meanwhile, we are very, very, very glad to report that our 20 th year will be the one where we re-open Bramley Lawn, the former Leeds City Council day centre. We finally have the lease, and contractors will soon be starting the work that needs doing. We don’t want to give a launch date yet, but as soon as we have one we will invite you along to our opening events. Lucky lady! Congratulations to Mrs Hardaker who recently won our Lucky numbers draw twice! Lucky numbers give you a great chance to win some handy money, while contributing to BEA funds. In 3 years the scheme has produced about £6,000 both in prize money, and for BEA, with an average first price of £120-£130! To take part, please phone the BEA office (236 1644) for a membership form. Preventing or surviving a stroke

Over 1,500 people in Leeds have a stroke each year, while over 4,000 are living with the affects of a stroke. ···························································································

Recognise the symptoms – the FAST test FACIAL weakness: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or

eye drooped?

ARM weakness: Can the person raise both arms?

SPEECH problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?

TIME to call 999.

If a person fails any one of these tests, dial 999 to get help immediately. A speedy response can help reduce the damage to a person’s brain and improve their chances of a full recovery.

···························································································

Information and support National Charity the Stroke Association offers two services in Leeds to promote prevention and awarness of strokes, and to support stroke survivors:

Leeds Information, Advice and Support Service helps stroke survivors and their carers cope with the sudden changes that happen after a stroke. The Communication Support Service helps stroke survivors improve their communication skills and confidence. About one third of stroke survivors have difficulty speaking, reading or writing because of a condition called aphasia.

Phone 0113 2019 780 for more information. ···························································································

West Leeds Stroke Club BEA provides support through West Leeds Stroke Club

a session on simple, healthy lunch ideas.

Bramley Elderly Action 0113 236 1644 www.bramleyea.org.uk

Join us: the tea dance Bramley Community Centre Wednesday, 2.00-4.00, Sunday (2nd Sunday of the month), 2.00-4.00 Brian Myland and Joan Lockett will make you very welcome if you come and try your hand (or rather, feet) at a tea dance. They are the team leaders at the BEA tea dances, on a Wednesday and a Sunday. Both agree that dancing is a great thing to do: it’s sociable, helps keep you fit and active, you meet people and you’re always learning. For some it gives purpose and continuity. Many people have been coming for years. Joan was keen to stress that ‘it doesn’t matter if you don’t know the steps’ – some people don’t dance at all, but still love being there. The Sunday dance is a mix of sequence, ballroom and old time dance, while on Wednesdays it’s specifically sequence (with

some line dancing in the interval). Both have regular ‘spot waltzes’ and raffles. Brian first went to a dance when he was about 16, but it wan’t until he did sequence dancing on holiday in Torquay that he got the bug. He went on to an evening class and then got involved with BEA dances in 2002. Joan first danced at school, and has been dancing most of her life. When she was on BEA’s development committee in the mid 90s she thought dancing would be a worthwhile thing to do, and has been involved ever since. Each dance costs just £1.00 (plus 50p for refreshments). Transport is available for £2.50 return.) Phone 0113 236 1644 for information.

Meet the ironmonger

Dave Dubej, Bramley Ironmongers and DIY

Dave Dubej has been running Bramley Ironmongers for more than 11 years. He’d been a regular customer there and accepted the opportunity to take over the business after being a bus driver for 15 years. Dave prides himself on doing the best he can for his customers. As well as running every aspect of the shop he gives advice – on the best way to do things, and the best products to do them. It’s the personal advice and support that has led to Dave being a figure customers can trust and why they keep coming back. (That, and his dog George, who Dave admits some

people just come in to see!) Dave reckons about a quarter of his customers are older people. He has often gone to a customer’s house to help – perhaps because they don’t feel safe climbing a ladder, or they’re not sure how to do something. He would always advise older people to “...only do it if you know what you’re doing.” If people can do something themselves he’ll advise them how, and show them, and then help them if they’ve tried, can’t do it and come back. Dave gets great pleasure from being self-employed, despite the feeling of being ‘tied’ to the hours, and above all from meeting people and passing on his knowledge. Say hello to Dave, and to George, if you’re passing. See more at www.bramleyea.org.uk

New funding Many thanks to the Harrison Potter Trust for significant funding to the costs of our newsletters and calendar for the coming year.

Energy prices

Gas and electricity prices are going up. Your energy supplier will write to you to explain how to get on their best value tariff. If you do not respond you could be placed on a standard variable tariff which may not be the best price for you. If you can access the internet, there are websites where you can compare energy company prices.

Breast cancer awareness The new awareness campaign, starting in February, focuses on women over 70 – the age of 1 in 3 women who get breast cancer. Look out for it, and contact your GP straight away about any concerns.

Help with quality of life The Annie Guthrie Memorial Trust provides small grants to local people who are disabled or chronically ill. This may help with adaptions and equipment if you have arthritis, servicing a chair lift, or towards outings if you need a carer with you. Please contact Edward Turner on 0113 257 6521 to apply.

‘Police courier’ scam Beware of a recent common scam. You get a phone call from ‘the police’ saying they need to investigate fraudulent activity on your bank account. They will ask you to type your PIN into your phone keypad

and will then send a ‘police courier’ to your home to collect your bank card, and your bank account will be emptied. Remember – not even your bank will ask for your PIN. Never give your personal details to anyone you do not know or trust.

Mental health support If you or someone you care for uses mental health services, phone Leeds CAB Mental Health Outreach service for advice on a whole range of problems - 0113 281 6733

Thank you to ASDA Thank you to ASDA Pudsey who have donated £50 (made from their gift wrapping service) and a sack full of warm winter items. We are also in line for at least another £50 from their ‘coin bank’. A big thank you to everyone who put their coins in the right slot.
