Age UK Leeds Advice line You can make an appointment. 0113 389 3004

Age UK Advice and information. 0800 678 1174 8.00am-7.00pm, daily www.ageuk.org.uk/money-matters

Attendance Allowance: are you getting the benefit?

Many BEA members may qualify for valuable financial

support but don’t claim it. Attendance Allowance (AA) can

make a real difference to your day-to-day life and help you

to carry on living independently at home.

···························································································

You can claim AA if you: are 65 or over could benefit from help with personal care, such as

getting washed or dressed, or supervision to keep you safe at day or night

have any type of disability or illness, including sight or hearing impairments, or conditions such as dementia

have needed help for at least 6 months (if you are terminally ill you can claim straight away)

···························································································

You would get £55.65 a week if you need help either in the

day or at night, or £83.10 a week if you need help both in

the day and at night. (2017-18 rates.)

···························································································

AA is not means-tested so it doesn’t matter how much

income and savings you have. It’s also tax-free. AA will not

reduce any other income you receive, and you may become

entitled to other benefits such as Pension Credit, Housing

Benefit or Council Tax Reduction, or get an increase in

these benefits if you already claim them.

··························································································

You do not have to spend AA on a carer. You can spend it on other types of help, or on equipment. If you have been turned down for AA it may be worth

claiming again, as your circumstances may have changed.

···························································································

If you are aged below 65, you may be able to claim a

Personal Independence Payment (PIP). ···························································································

See panel on the right for how to get support to claim AA.

Meet the Carers Support Worker Tom Harris, Carers Leeds

Tom Harris works for Carers Leeds, a charity which supports unpaid carers in Leeds, of which there are more than 72,000! Tom visits carers in their own homes in the South and West of the city. He also sees people on a one-to-one basis at GP surgeries. His role is primarily to support carers of people who have physical health problems. He supports carers in various ways – from providing a listening ear to helping access benefits and a range of other services. Tom has worked in this role since April this year. He really enjoys the variety, meets many interesting people and makes a difference in the lives of a ‘hidden’ group. But it is challenging. Some people’s situations are often very complex and upsetting, and require sensitivity and understanding. Many older carers are extremely isolated, as the caring responsibilities they take on make it difficult to get out of the house, often on top of health problems they may have themselves. Tom finds that older carers often put on a ‘brave face’ and may not seek the help that is available or know what help is available. Having someone to talk to and provide information can often be useful. Tom grew up in Leeds and has lived in various parts of the city all his life. He spends a lot of time looking after his 6 month old baby, and goes for a run to de-stress when he can!

Are you a carer? Would you like support? Phone Carers Leeds Advice Line 0113 380 4300

I’m a BEA Volunteer Angela Yeoman 1. What’s your volunteer role? I phone BEA members who we haven’t seen for a while to see if they’re OK, if they need any of our services and to check that they receive the newsletter regularly. 2. How long have you been a volunteer? Since December 2016. 3. Why did you get involved? I’m semi-retired. To use my skills, to give something back to the community and because I have experience of working with older people. 4. Three words that sum up BEA for you? Charity for local people 5. What do you get out of volunteering? Giving something back. Working with a group of people I admire. 6. What else do you like doing? My life is around my two dogs (a Siberian husky and a staffy cross) who are quite boisterous! I also volunteer for the Royal British Legion, at their drop-in and doing casework across West Yorkshire. 7. Where were you born? Irvine, Ayrshire (Scotland). Robbie Burns’ country. 8. What’s your favourite film? Any version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ 9. And your favourite book? ‘A child called “It” ’ (Dave Pelzer) but I don’t read much now. 10. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself I have donated bone marrow, which went to someone in Canada. See www.bramleyea.org.uk/join-bea/im-a-bea-volunteer/ for more volunteers’ stories
