Fun Facts about the July 4th DeclarationYou probably know that the Declaration of Independence wasn’t actually signed by

delegates from all 13 colonies until August 2, 1776. But did you know these other interesting facts about our nation’s founding documents? They come from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration website:

• The original Declaration wasn’t written on ordinary paper, but engrossed (a process of preparing an official document in a large, clear hand) on parchment—an animal skin that’s stretched and treated with lime to create a strong, enduring document.

• The copy on display in the National Archives in Washington, D.C., is one of 26 “Dunlap Broadsides,” printed on paper on the night of July 4, 1776. Twenty-one are owned by American institutions, two are held by British institutions, and three are in the possession of private owners.

• On the bottom left corner of the original Declaration is a handprint whose origins are unknown. Attempts to clean the handprint would damage the document. Also, the back of the signed Declaration bears the words “Original Declaration of Independence, dated 4th July 1776,” upside down at the bottom of the page.

Brain FreezeSince July is National Ice Cream month, it is likely we’ll

all partake in consuming one of America’s favorite sweet treats.  However, there’s something to keep in mind. We’ve all experienced the dreaded “ice cream headache” at some point in our lives, particularly when we least expect it. We’ll be enjoying our favorite tasty treat, and then BOOM! A sharp shooting pain hits us. On the upside, these headaches usually last only approximately 30 seconds. Curious as to why these headaches appear out of nowhere? Joseph Hulihan of Temple University has a solid answer.

“When something cold touches the roof of your mouth on a hot day, it triggers a cold headache. The cause is a dilation of blood vessels in the head. The dilation may be caused by a nerve center located above the roof of your mouth - when this nerve center gets cold, it seems to overreact and tries to heat your brain. Therefore, the easy way to avoid brain freeze would be to keep cold things away from the roof of your mouth!”

Ultimately, the best way to avoid getting an ice cream headache is to avoid this amazing food altogether. But is that really possible?

Enjoying the Sun While Avoiding the Burn

Summer is here, and the days are warm and sunny again. If you’re not careful, an outside venture can lead to a case of sunburn. Sunscreen will offer some protection but you’ve got to follow the directions.

Remember to apply sunscreen to often-overlooked areas of your body like your ears, lips, and feet.

Page 4: Brain Freeze - Amazon S3 · Brain Freeze Since July is National Ice Cream month, it is likely we’ll all partake in consuming one of America’s favorite sweet treats. However, there’s

Independence Day, or the Fourth of July, celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the 13 colonies in 1776, thereby severing their ties to Great

Britain. That historic document was drafted by Thomas Jefferson, with substantial

edits made by other members of the Congress. An officially inscribed version was signed by 56 members of the Continental Congress on August 2.

Celebration of the day began during the American Revolution with fireworks and parades, traditions that continue today. The best-known observance takes place in Washington, D.C., and includes a spectacular fireworks display.

Did you know?• A salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called

a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon by any capable military base.

• The first week of July is one of the busiest American travel periods of the year, as many people utilize the holiday for longer vacation trips.

On July 17, 1902, the modern air-conditioning was invented by Willis Carrier. This launched an industry that would improve the way we live, and ultimately change the world forever. Although we do not owe all the credit to Carrier, as the air conditioning concept goes as far back as Egyptian time. There was a number of people who experimented with this concepts including Benjamin Franklin. Unfortunately, the efforts died for nearly fifty years until Carrier took interest and overcame the challenges that made air conditioning originally unsuccessful.

Carrier had successfully designed other useful things, like a lumber dry kiln and a coffee dryer. It was the printing industry that required the evolution of air conditioning. Sacket & Wilhelms, a printing company in Brooklyn New York found

that the humidity was causing the registration of their full-color printing to misalign, causing poor quality, scrap, waste and time lost from production. It was Sacket & Wilhelms in 1902 that had the honors of establishing the first set of coal that led Carrier to the invention of the first functioning air conditioner. Carrier did what he was known for, expressing the vision to assemble everything that has crossed before him, improved upon it, and create something entirely new. The drawings of his concept were dated July 17, 1902, which is now known as the day air conditioning was born.

However, it was not until 1928 that the first resi-dential system was developed. Part of the reason it took so long was due to World War II. Families could not afford the luxury, and everything was still disrupted from the war. Today, we don’t think twice about it, especially in the U.S., as it has turned into a luxury most everyone can afford now, or otherwise access publicly. What would we do without it?

a Cool Breeze The drawings of this concept were dated July 17, 1902, which is now known as the day air conditioning

was born.

When determining the day to exchange nuptials, it’s hard to imagine that too many folks would consider an old super-

stition. But, when you think about how many people incorporate tradition into their wedding plans, it makes sense to think that just as many people might also consider superstition. Dubbed an Unlucky Month for Weddings, July is one of those months that has a bit of negativity associated with it. The old superstition includes lines about July that go something like this: “Married in July, with flowers ablaze/Bitter-sweet mem’ries in after days.” So what does this mean, exactly? It has been suggested over time that “Bitter-sweet mem’ries in after days” makes reference to impending tragedy that will occur, as opposed to a flourishing love. In addition, a variation of this wedding day folklore also denies wealth to the couples that wed in July. Theoretically speaking, fortune most certainly does not shine on those married in July. However, superstitions aside, a marriage is what you make it, regardless of the chosen wedding date.

Superstitions Aside...
