1. OVERVIEW1.1. Introduction
Theroofofanycommercialprojectconstitutesamajorsurfacethatissubjecttotheeffectsofclimateandtemperature.Thiscanhaveamajoreffectonthecomfortandenergyefficiencyofthebuildingasawhole.
Theadditionofroofinsulationandventilationcanimprovetheoverallperformanceofabuilding,leadingtogreatercomfortforoccupants,costreductionsandevenimpactontheenvironment.
Bradfordhasalwaysbeenattheforefrontofinsulationdesignandouraimistohelpourcustomersmakesmarterchoiceswhendesigningandconstructingtheirbuildings.
BradfordwasthefirstAustralianinsulationcompanytocombinethebenefitsofreflectivefoilwithbuildingblankettocreateAnticon™,(anti-condensation)themosteffectiveinsulationforundermetalroofingandwallcladding.Forover30yearsAnticonhasprovidedcosteffectivethermalandacousticinsulationandcondensationcontroltohelpmakehomesandcommercialbuildingsenergyefficientandmorecomfortabletoliveandworkin.

2.2. DesigningforBCASectionJandGreenStar
TheBuildingCodeofAustralia(BCA)providestheminimumtotalthermalperformancerequiredforroofs.Insulationplaysamajorroleinachievingtheseminimumvalues.
InGreenStarbuildingsoneofthekeyfactorsthatcontributetoGreenStarpointsisenergyimprovement.Theupgradeofpassiveinsulationwithinabuildingcanresultinsignificantenergysavings.
RegardlessofthebuildingachievingaGreenStarratingormeetingdeemedtosatisfyprovisionsoftheBCAthereisastrongcasetoincreasespecifiedinsulationperformance,astheenergysavingscanquicklypayfortheincreaseinmarginalcosts.
AdditionallyBradfordiscommittedtoimprovingthesustainabilityofcommercialbuildingsbybecomingamemberoftheGreenBuildingCouncilofAustraliain2009.WebelieveBradfordInsulationcanaddsubstantialvaluetothelongtermsustainablefutureofcommercialpremises.
2.3. DesigningforCondensationControl
Condensationcanbecomeaproblemwhenwarm,moistaircomesincontactwithacoldermetalroof.Thiscanleadtodamageoftheroofsheetingandinternalliningsandpotentialadversehealtheffectsfrommouldandmildew.Correctspecificationofinsulationwillpreventcondensationoccurringunderneathmetalroofs.
Inmostcasestheinsulationthicknessrequiredtomeettheenergyefficiencyrequirementswillbesufficientforcondensationcontrolinmostclimatezones.AdditionalcareshouldbetakentoensuretheAnticon™thicknessselectedfortheclimatezoneissuitabletopreventcondensationoccurring,particularlyintropicalandalpineclimates,astheBCAdoesnotconsidercondensation.EvenwhenbuildingsarenotrequiredtomeettheBCAinsulationshouldstillbeconsideredtoreducethepotentialofcondensationoccurringinabuilding.
ForapplicationsintropicalclimatesAnticon™mustbeinstalledblanketfacedown,oralternativelylaytheAnticonblanketwithfoilfacingdownwardsandtheninstallanadditionallayeroffoiloverthetopoftheAnticonblanketagainsttheroofsheeting.
2.4. DesigningforNoiseControl
Anticoncanprovideconsiderableacousticbenefits.Whilereflectivefoillaminatesprovidelittleresistancetonoisetransfer,thebulkglasswoolinsulationcomponentofAnticonagainsttheroofmetalnotonlyreducesairbornenoise,itprovidesadampeningeffecttoreduceimpactnoise.Infact,Bradfordhavedevelopedaspecificproduct,Acousticon™,withscientificallyoptimisedacousticcharacteristics.Acousticon™reducesrainnoiseandeventropicalstormnoisebyupto18dB(A),whichisarounda75%reductioninloudness,comparedtoanuninsulatedmetalroof.
2.5.DesigningforFireRisk
BradfordInsulationoffersarangeofsarkingandbulkinsulationproductsthatcanmeetSpecificationC1.10andC1.10a.Refertosection6.4fordetailsonfireperformanceofproductsprovidedbyBradford.

BradfordInsulationglasswoolismanufacturedfromupto80%recycledglass.Muchofthisglassisnotsuitableforrecyclinginflatorcontainerglassmanufacture.Allwaterusedinthemanufactureofourglasswoolproductsisalsorecycled.
BradfordInsulationhasundertakenanauditofourglasswool,rockwoolandreflectivefoillaminateinsulationmanufacturingprocessesreferencingtheUSEPAListofOzoneDepletingSubstances(Class1andClass2).Thisauditfoundthatnoozonedepletingsubstancesareinvolvedineitherthemanufactureorcompositionoftheseproducts.
OurconclusionisthatBradfordInsulation’sglasswool,rockwoolandreflectivefoillaminateshaveanOzoneDepletingPotentialofzero.
Environmentalstudieshaveshownthatglasswoolandrockwoolproductshavelowembodiedenergy.Bradfordrecognisesthat,asaninsulationsupplier,wehaveasignificantroletoplayinthepassivereductionofenergyuseinourworld.
2.7.DesigningforInstalledCost
BradfordoffersaCuttoLengthservice,whereourroofblanketisdeliveredtositepre-cuttosize.Thisresultsinasignificantreductionintimeandwaste,leadingtolowerinstallationcosts.Bradfordoffersarangeofheavierdutyfoilswhichhelptoreducedamageandreworkduringinstallation.
2.8.DesigningforIndoorAirQuality

AcoustituffBradfordAcoustituffisatough,lightweightflexiblevapourbarrierconsistingofpolypropylenefilmbondedtoaluminiumfoilwithfireretardanthotmeltadhesive.TheflexiblenatureofAcoustituffprovideshighlevelsofsoundabsorptionandlightreflectivity.
UltraphonUltraphonisablackwovenfibreglassfacingdesignedtoprovideapremiumblackfinishwithalargeopenareaformaximumsoundabsorption.Pleasenotethisproductisnotsuitablewherecondensationcontrolisrequired.
4. APPLICATIONS AND PRODUCTS
4.1. IntroductionAsmostBradfordroofingproductscombineabaseblanketwithafacing,averywiderangeofproductsisavailable.Inordertoselecttherightproductsforyourapplicationwerecommendthatyoudeterminetheblanketthicknessrequiredtomeetthethermalandcondensationrequirementsoftheprojectandthenselectthefacingthatprovidesthebestlevelofperformanceforyourparticularapplication.
4.2. MaterialBaseBlanket(RMAT)andTotalSystemR-Values(RT)
AS/NZS4859.1:2002(amendment2006)allowsinsulationmanufacturerstopresenttheperformanceinanumberofways.
TwocommonmethodsofpresentingproductperformanceareRMAT(thebasematerialthermalperformance)orRT(thetotalperformanceoftheproductinstalledinasystem).Eg.Anticon100HPhasabaseblanketperformanceofR2.5(RMAT),however,wheninstalledinawarehouseroof,thetotalR-ValueoftheroofcanbecalculatedasR3.2(RT).BradfordpresentsitsproductperformanceasbaseblanketperformanceRMATtoallowdesignerstheflexibilitytodesignandspecifythemostcosteffectiveprojects.
Toensurevalueformoneyitisimportantthatproductsarecomparedbasedonthesamecriteria,eg.basematerialperformanceortotalperformance.

5.1.GeneralBradfordAnticon™shouldbeinstalledbyqualifiedprofessionals.Careshouldbetakenintheinstallationoftheinsulationthatsufficientroomisprovidedtoallowtheinsulationtorecovertoitsdesignthicknessbetweenpurlins.IftheinsulationiscompressedthetotalR-ValuewillbereducedandmaynotmeetrequireddesignR-Values.
5.2. InstallationofBulkInsulationBeneathMetalRoofs
5.2.1. Installation Details
Wheninsulationistobeinstalledundermetalroofsprovisionmustbemadeforinsulationtorecovertoitsnominalthickness.SpacerscanbeusedtolifttheroofsheetingabovethepurlinlineallowingtheinsulationtorecovertoitsdesignthicknessasshowninFigure1.
5.2.2. Installation of Insulation
Theinsulationissimplyrolledoutoverthesafetymesh.ThesubsequentrollsofAnticonmustbuttupagainsttheinstalledAnticonoverthefoillap.

5.2.3. Spacers
ToensurecompliancewithsectionJoftheBCAtheinsulationmustbeallowedsufficientspacetorecovertonominalthicknessandathermalbreakofR0.2atpurlin
mustbeachieved.Arangeofspacersisavailableonthemarketthatwillachievethis.
BradfordofferstheThermodeckspacer,ahighperformancethermalspacerthatprovidesathermalbreakwellinexcessoftheR0.2requiredbytheBCA.BradfordalsoofferstheAshgridspacer,ametalpreassembledspacerdesignedforbothconcealedandpiercedfixedroofdecking.
SpacerheightrequirementsforAnticonproductsareasfollows;
