he taste of rubber andstrawberry ... mmm ...delicious, the diners say.The strawberry tart, hasall but disappeared, but

everyone is gently nibbling theremnants of the sweet confectionfrom rubber-gloved hands. Withno utensils, the food squishesbetween their fingers. Welcome todessert at Bed Supperclubs famedsurprise weekend where a meal ispresented with special surprise ofBeds own concoction.

Six months since its opening,Beds creative team is focusing onturning it up a notch at theSupperclub.

We definitely have some newtwists now, and the team is alwayscoming up with something spe-cial, says PR director Juliana Ross.

Expect the odd and the unex-pected. Diners actually climb intobed together while the staff injectsthe right dose of undergroundvenom into the heart of theSukhumvit area (thats art direc-tor Tanyapat Limsutorns actualjob description). Has it worked?

Yes, according to the faithful. The creative twists such as the

rubber gloves and performance-art pieces, which often includeaudience participation, haveensured that Bed gets noticedamong other high-end nightlifevenues.

Beds elaborate meals only fur-ther its reputation by provingthat its more than just a concept-heavy restaurant. The strikinglydelicious fusion cuisine actuallyoutweighs hang-ups about the see-and-be-seen style that goes withthe clubs design or events. Thefour-course weekend specials(around Bt690) along with regu-lar weekly fare are kept amazing byChef Dan Ivarie, formerly ofJesters in the Peninsula Hotel.

He has a gift for subtle palates, and there are usually choices on

weeknights including duck, chick-en and seabass. The presentationis both delicate and attractive, withstandard dessert fare including abanana crepe flambewith GrandMarnier (a cant-miss).

Dinner reservations are recom-mended, especially for weekends. The dining area holds 120 guests, and has a few tables available alongamong the many beds.

On weekends, doors usuallyclose around 8pm and dinner isserved in one sitting with a specialsurprise.

Madonnas American Life video has been reincarnat-ed as a tamer, non-violent version of its former self. The performer scrapped the original version becauseshe thought its violent, antiwar themes were inap-propriate during the conflict in Iraq.

The original video featured explosions, a runway show of cou-ture army fatigues and Madonna dancing in a military uniform. At the end, she threw what looked like a hand grenade into thelap of a President George W Bush look-alike.

The new version still features Madonna dressed in a mili-tary uniform, but shes simply singing in front of a backdrop ofever-changing flags of different countries.

Due to the volatile state of the world and out of sensitivity andrespect to the armed forces, who I support and pray for, I do not

want to risk offending anyone who might misinterpret the mean-ing of this video, the singer said earlier this month when she

decided not to release the original version. But in a VH1 special that aired before the videos debut, the 44-

year-old singer said she was frustrated that some celebrities whoexpress antiwar sentiments are suffering a backlash.

The Dixie Chicks, for example, saw sales of their best-sellingdisc Home drop after lead singer Natalie Maines told a Londonaudience she was ashamed of Bush, a remark for which she laterapologised.

You know, its ironic were fighting for democracy in Iraqbecause we ul timately arent celebrat ing de mocracy here,Madonna said. Because anybody who has anything to sayagainst the war or against the preside nt or whatever is punished, and thats not democracy - its people being intolerant.

Madonnas new album, American Life, was released on Tuesday.

    Choices

    The Right AngleScholar SquareOccasionalTable

Quite plain is itsdemeanour, theScholar Square occa-sional table effortlesslyexudes strength, sturdi-ness and reliability.

A part of OusScholar Collection andmade from teak, thishunk of a table stands370mm high, making it

well suited as a coffee table. The earth tone of thewood, which comes in six different shades, willdeliver calm and cool to any room.

Playing with negative and positive space, the

form and function of this clean-looking table allowsthe user to place objects such as books or figurinesunderneath as well as above. The base is what givesit its simplistic uniqueness, with confidence writ-ten all over its surface. Stop by the Jim Thompsonstore on Surawong Road where the Scholar Squaretable goes for Bt33,500.

    Silken SimplicityAVA Double Drawers

Another one from Jim Thompson, but from a dif-ferent collection, the AVA Double Drawers aresheathed in gorgeous Thai silk. There are over athousand patterns and shades of silk that can bepicked from to suit your taste or to complementthe rest of the room.

Also made from teak, these double drawers havean air of simplicity and the clean, uncluttered lookthat Ou Baholyodhin is famous for. An earthiness

is imparted through the use of teak, but a subtleand sophisticated elegance created by the Thaisilk.

Their casualness and practicality invites use;place it in a hallway with some fresh flowers in a

vase and stack up your books. Their spacious draw-ers can also provide a pretty decent home for yourlittle gadgets and gizmos.

The Double Drawers are available at the JimThompson store located on Surawong Road forBt30,000.

Washing Time AwayOcean Glass Time Collection

Toasting to time and serving a hearty meal wouldbe most appropriate with the glassware of Oussublime Ocean Glass Time collection.

So simple, so pure, this glass tableware collec-tion comprises a variety of stemware, tumblers,

bowls and plates. The clean look and undeniable perfection in

each line and angle of this glass collection show-case the young designers talent for creating granddesigns with a minimum of detail.

The stemware in the Ocean Glass Time col-lections consists of a fluted champagne glass (160ml), goblets (275 ml), white wine glasses (185 ml)and larger glasses for red wine (225 ml). Includedin the tumblers are those for tall drinks (420 ml),those designed for white wine (245 ml) and red

wine (270 ml) and for drinks on the rocks (360 ml).The bowls in the collection come in three dif-

ferent sizes: a salad bowl (19 cm), small servingbowls (11 cm) and large serving bowls (13 cm). Theplates come in large (23.5 cm), medium (19 cm)and small (15 cm). Ous glassware is available atall Central department stores.

    ContemporaryEleganceBayon Armchair

Sleek and modern, with the magic touch ofauthentic Thai silk, this armchair from theBayon Collection may not look lounge-back-and-relax comfortable, but its clean lines are deceiving.

Comfortable as well as spacious, the contoursof the Bayon armchair allow you to slide way backand rest that tired body of yours in gorgeous

style.Another of Ou Baholyodins designs for JimThompson, the chair can be covered in the rangeof colours and patterns available from the compa-ny. The shade of the chairs teak legs can be matchedto the fabric you select.

    Who wouldnt

    want to look likestunning super-m o d e lM e t h i n e e

Look Ked Kingpayom? Butwhat to you have to do to

achieve the radiant look of thecatwalk star? Instead of keep-ing it herself, Methinee hasdecided to share her beautysecret with others. Accordingto the supermodel, source ofher healthy glow is fruit juice and now anyone can sip oneof Methinees elixers at herContrazt Juice Bars.

Following the success ofbranches at the GrammyBuilding on Ekkamai, theLiberty Building on Silom andSiam Square Soi 1, Methineerecently opened the latestContrazt Juice Bar on the busystreets of Siam Square Soi 2.

Juice bars have come a long

way from their days as coun-ters in health food stores offer-ing wheatgrass and carrot juiceand glasses of chalky protein. But as juice bars have gainedpopularity, theyve also lostsomething of their sense ofpurpose. In keeping with theidea of fresh juices as a path to

better health, Contrazt offerdrinks that go beyond the tastytrappings of a watermelonfrostie, serving drinks thatactually aid your health.

For example, Contraztssmoothies are blended takinginto consideration the vita-mins and amino acids con-tained in the fruits that go into

them. The Flu Buster smooth-ie (Bt75) is a vitamin-rich con-coction of orange, strawberriesand bananas, that is said tohelp fight the common cold. The Sweet Surrender is asmoothie of fresh strawberries,

watermelon, banana andyogurt, thatll is said to giveyour romantic relationships a

    boost by energising yourlibido.

Body cleansing and energydrinks are also on the menu. If

you work in the Siam area, drop by in the early morn anddown a Good Morning (Bt75),heavy-duty dose of vitamin Cto jump-start your day. If

youre feeling a little light-headed, there a drink called aDizzy Spell (Bt95) meant tohelp rid you of nausea.

    The Ultimate Detox (Bt75)

promises to give you a fullinternal cleansing and theBoner, concocted from redapples, cabbage, beetroot andcelery, is designed to build up

    bones and make themstronger.

Another favourite is a niftycombination of watermelonand ginger, called a Sex Me Up

(Bt75), a drink said not only toenhance your sex drive, butrelieve hangovers and improve

    blood circulation.

Though delicious, some ofthe more unusual blends

can take a little getting usedto, but as theyre made fromall-natural ingredients and

blended fresh theyre hard toresist. The recipes are allMethinees.

I enjoy fruit drinks myselfand I always make them athome, says Methinee.

In addition to its fruit andvegetable drinks, Contraztoffers cookies, home-made ice

creams and sorbets as well asultra-moist and deliciouschocolate cakes. Theres adessert for health freaks as

well, Orange Carrot Cake.Coffee and other beverages arealso served.

Contrazt is great place tochill or even drop by to learn alittle lesson about the benefitsof fruits and vegetables. The

juice bar itself is cozy with aslightly futuristic feel andenough cushy chairs to seat 25people. At Bt75 - Bt95 a pop,the fruit and veggie drinks area bit pricey, but as they say:Whats money if you donthave your health? n

When a person decidesto play a 152-year-oldsea turtle in a movie, the key word toremember is Whoa.

While writing and directing thenew computer-animated FindingNemo, opening today in theatresaround the Kingdom, AndrewStanton found himself saying thatagain and again as the voice of aphilosophical turtle named Crush.

Whoa can have many mean-ings in surfer-dude lingo, as in: Atfirst you were like, Whoa! (Help!)And then we were like, Whoa!(Alarmed!) And then you were like,Whoa ... (Ouch.)

The 37-year-old filmmaker previ-ously co-directed the A BugsLife and supplied part of the men-acing electrical voice to the evilspaceman Zurg in Toy Story 2.

In a phone interview from Pixar

Animation headquarters inEmeryville, California, Stanton saidhe fell into acting by doing scratchvoices dialogue tests done bycrew members before the finalactors record the lines whilewriting for the Toy Story movies.

In the case of Crush, Stantonsaid he couldnt find another actorwho got the beach-bum drawl justright. So he kept his version in thefinal film.

Finding Nemo chronicles theadventures of Marlin, an orange-and-white striped clownfish voicedby Albert Brooks, who alienates hisson Nemo by being too overprotec-tive.

When Nemo is captured by ahuman diver and imprisoned in anaquarium, Marlin teams with theforgetful blue tang Dory, played byEllen DeGeneres, on a rescue quest.

Along the way they meet an anti-

carnivore shark named Bruce, Nigelthe jabbering pelican, and Crushand his baby Squirt who teachMarlin to have more faith in Nemo.

Did your own family lifeinspire the story of thenervous fish father?

I was on Toy Story 2 and fin-ishing A Bugs Life ... and myson was five at the time. I was sobusy with those movies that Ireally felt I hadnt seen himmuch. I made some daddy-sontime to walk in the park and Ispent the whole walk going:Dont touch that, Watch out forcars, Youre going to poke youreye out. I sort of stopped myselfand realised I was so afraid ofsomething bad happening to himthat I was missing out on thechance to connect with him.

Did anybody in particularinspire Crushs surfer talk?

Its h ard not to think of Spicoli(Sean Penns burnout characterfrom 1982s Fast Times AtRidgemont High). He sort ofintroduced the SouthernCalifornia surfer to the world inthe early 80s.

Has Finding Nemochanged the way you lookat seafood?

No, I also got that same thingwith A Bugs Life. No, I still killthose freaking ants wheneverthey come into my house.(Laughs.) I hate to say it butsomebody chose sushi for theFinding Nemo wrap party. Idont know if Id go fishing again, but once its already on my plateI dont really think about it.

Any deep-sea divingplanned now that the film isfinished?

I hope to. Im hoping to go toAustralia and dive the GreatBarrier Reef itself. That would begreat, to see all these fish thatI ve been working with all theseyears.

    Maybe start your ownaquarium?

No, thats a lot of work. Itsnot a low-stress hobby. ... Itshigh maintenance, man. Startwith goldfish, theyre low mainte-nance, but even there youcould easily screw up.n AP

a whale of a taleDisney and Pixars Finding Nemo takes computer animation into new waters.

Disneys new animated feature, FindingNemo, has got Bakery Music song-writer. Boyd Kosiyabong singing a new tune.

Buena Vista asked me to write a songtitled Rak Tae (True Love) for themovie, because they knew I love animatedfilms, says Boyd.

While many of Boyds songs haveappeared on movie soundtracks, this is the

first that he has specifically penned for afilm. The song wont actually be onFinding Nemos soundtrack, but it willbe released as a single or on a compilationalbum. Its only meant to be a songinspired by the movie, explains Boyd.

In the song, Boyd again explores realmof love this time the love between a fatherand son. In keeping with the story ofFinding Nemo the song illustrates howone has to go through the pitfalls of life in

order to learn about life, explainsBoyd. It looks at the tribulation of a fatherwho must let his child be hurt in order tolearn.

Finding Nemo definitely brought outsomething of the child in Boyd. Not only didhe get to brag to friends about his advancecopy of the film but Buena Vista also threwin a bonus no child-at-heart could resist.

They offered me figurines and modelsto add to my rather large toy collection,

Boyd admits witha smile. Goodies aside,

the songwriter has other reasons for rec-ommending the movie.

Pixar is involved and I think they doeven better computer animation thanDisney, notes Boyd.

That says something as Boyd, apartfrom being a top scribe for Bakery Music, also runs his own animation productioncompany, Beboyd CG. n

    SCREEN MAGIC: BIT BY BIT

CharactersIt took a total of 361,975feathers to cover all 7 peli-cans in the shot in the filmwith the most pelicans, anaverage of more than 50,000individual feathers per bird. There are 202 teeth inBruces mouth, each individ-ually animatable.

ExplosionsIt took 80 individual mine explosions to blow up the submarine. Themost seen in any shot is the final shot of the sequence with 33 indi-vidual blasts, 34 explosion clouds, in only 30 frames. That shotrequired more than 120 layers in compositing to incorporate all theeffects.

    Whale

For a shading reference the art dept borrowed actual samples ofwhale skin and baleen from UC Berkeley for refer-ence on the whale.

Fish SchoolsIt took about 1,000 individually ani-mating fish to fill up the Fishing Net atthe end of the film. Only 50% of thefish in the shot of the fish in theFishing Net have blink cycles, and ofthose, about half of those blink only once, with the others having a mix of blink cycle

timing letting them usuallyblink more than once duringthe shot, all at random times. It took 692 distinct schools offish used in various places, invarious scenes, in variousshots, to make the film. Ittook 99,079 individual fish tofill out all those schools.

JellyfishThe most jellies seen in anyindividual shot was 8,609 inthe shot where Father andDory race by camera as wepan with them. It took 74,472

total jellyfish to fully populate and fill out the entire sequence. 1,112of those 74,472, were handplaced, shot by shot.

Turtle DivePixar had to create and simulate 800,000cm of the East AustralianCurrent to complete both scenes with the turtles. That ends up

being a tube about 5 miles long. To fill thattube and fully realise this loca-

tion for the film, Pixarhad to use approximately290,336 bubbles, along

with 1,161,344 individ-ual pieces of particle matter.

The Coral ReefThe shot of the single fish swimming away from the barracudathrough the suddenly empty neighbourhood, required 1,890

corals to be hand placed to complete the reef background, more than any other single shot. When Mr Ray takes

Nemo on a FieldTrip to the DropOff, Pixarhad to use 12,996 individual corals to build

all the reef sections theyswim through.

would do so well. No one could have predictedCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragons success, either. So I dont let the pressure get to me. Thedirector tells me what he wants and I justdesign the action to go with his vision. I dontthink feeling stressed about it will help the situ-ation.

Some critics would say that over-exposure toHong Kong action films could be detrimental. What do you think?

That is true. There are pros and cons to every-thing. When something good comes along, otherpeople will hop on the bandwagon and work thegenre to death. It then turns the audienceaway. This is the natural cycle.

What was it like working with the Wachowskibrothers versus Ang Lee?

The Wachowski brothers understand actionmovies very well. With Ang, I knew some of hisrequests were undoable so I would tell him. Or Iwould tell him that something he thought was

spectacular, was really something quite com-mon in the industry. The Wachowski brothersmethod of filming is quite different from otherAmerican directors. For instance, Hollywooddirectors usually use several cameras to filman action sequence. The Wachowski brothersonly used one camera. Thats what we do inHong Kong. Theyll find the best angle and workfrom there.

What was it like working with Keanu Reevesthis t ime aro und?

He has improved a lot. He still had toundergo a lot of training but then hehas a lot more action and he also hadto train with weapons. In the firstpart, his fights were mainly hand-tohand and one-on-one.

How did you maintain the spir-itual and religious disciplines ofthe ma rtial arts in wh at somedescribe as the spiritual void of

    Hollywood?

Philosophical beliefs are part of thespirit of kung fu but it has no bearing

on the choreography. When you areteaching Keanu how to fight, we

dont talk about the philosophybehind the moves. If we had to

do that, then wed needanother eight to 10 years to

    train him! n

    changed. Films have progressed. In

Drunken Master, it was all hand-to-hand. However, these days, if the action istoo repetitive, the audience wont be sat-isfied. We need to add in a new style ortwo to boost the aesthetics of the action.Wires help the action look more powerfuland exaggerated.

Did you have to compromise someauthenticity to make the action lookbetter with digital effects?

Ive never worried about digitaleffects. The Wachowski brothersare very clear a bout how theywant a scene to look. They givevery specific instructions andexplain what they expect thedigital effects to do, so we justmatch the action with theeffects. The digital effects did-nt pose a problem.

With expectations forThe Matrix: Reloadedand Matrix Revolutionsrunning high, has thatincreased the pressureon you?

The Matrix was the first film I did inHollywood. It wasnt really difficult. I woulddiscuss with the director what he wantedfrom the action and how he wanted theaction to work with the special effects. Thedirectors didnt actually give me a hardtime and they gave me a lot of creativefreedom. They were very supportive.

ing schemes are perhaps the dominantforms. Seldom is it, though, that a major corpo-

ration express itself in such an interesting way asRed Bull has with its Bt500-million Red Bull X-

Park, which opened with marching-band flair lastSaturday. The launch ceremony for the park featuredappearances and performances by musical acts, freestyle hip hop showdowns, break dancing, agraffiti contest, sports demonstrations, bungee

jumping, loads of dyed hair, and free Red Bull. The park will allow Thai youngsters to

practice their skills at extreme games to repre-sent Thailand in regional and global competi-

tions, said Red Bull Beverage marketingmanager Sanit Wangvicha.

The Red Bull X-Park, which is being billedas Asias biggest open-air establishment forextreme games, resides on a 2.5-rai plot onSathorn Road, just opposite Soi Convent. Theplot is dominated by the terrain park - a collec-tion of ramps, boxes and rails capable of accom-modating skateboarders, roller-bladers and bik-ers - conceived by local designer and extremegames aficionado Apichat Ratnin.

The site also includes an air-conditionedclubhouse housing two cafe/snack shops, a proshop and an observation deck where extreme par-ents can sit in comfort while their kids sweat it outon the ramps below. Starting on Monday, the RedBull X-Park will be paying a nurse from neigh-

bourhood hospital BNH to operate an on-sitenurses station to deal with any injuries.

Because extreme sports tend to sharefairly porous borders with other youth cul-tures, the park expects to eventually

become a venue not just for sports, but alsofor music and other creative outlets.

Initially, the park open from 9am to 9pm will charge its patrons Bt30 per session with plansto eventually create year-long and lifetime member-ship packages. Members will get discounts on equip-

ment and Red Bull products. The park is insured forBt1 million per person for injuries resulting from acollapsed obstacle and Bt20 million for construction.

Apichat, who is also the secretary of the 2,500-member Thai Skater Association, founded this year, says that the opening of the park fulfills the five mainfactors necessary to foster a healthy extreme sportscommunity in Thailand.

We had talented athletes, local contests, interna-tional tournaments, media,

    but we didnthave an

    inte r-national-

standard park. The Red Bull park will help Thaiathletes develop and improvetheir skills.

There are many talentedyoung Thai extreme athletes,

Jirasak Patsorn for example placedfifth in the 2000 World ExtremeTournament in San Francisco, addsSanit. We have places to play football, basketball, tennis, but no venue for

kids who love extreme sports. They are forced to go todemolished buildings or under bridges to play. Manypeople assume that these kinds of teen hangouts couldlead to drugs.

Thai graffiti godfather and the judge of last Saturdaysgraffiti showdown, Mongkol Rattanapakdee, or Yacht, concurs.

The X-Park provides space for graffiti art as wellas sports. It has been difficult for graffiti to progress asan art here because the kids have to search out aban-doned buildings to create their work, he says. Thispark could become a tool that Thai artists can use todevelop their skills.

In the US, many different cities are building Xparks in order to give teenagers a drug-free place topractice the activities they love. This park has thesame objective, says Apichat, who used to work forthe Office of the Narcotics Control Broad.

One of the beneficiaries of the social and com-petitive spirit behind the Red Bull X-Park is

five-year-old Khwanthep Prakarnrat, an award-winning ice skater in Skate Asia 2002 and up-

and-coming roller blader extraordinaire.I like the park. Its cool. Its a little scary to

skate on the half pipe, but its fun, he said whileapplying some spray paint to one of the parksgraffiti walls. Khwanthep discovered extremesports when he was only three years old.

Thai X sportsmen will soon be recognised asworld champions, says Prapan, Khwanthepsfather and coach.

The social component and competitive national-ism of the language surrounding the Red Bull X-Parkis interesting, particularly as the opening of the parkcoincides with a national debate over the ethics ofmarketing energy drinks to the youth market. However, the people at Red Bull are quick to dismissany attempts to connect the park with sales.

We are not going to ask the kids to show a can ofRed Bull when they come to the park, says OgilvyPublic Relations communications director

Adcharaporn Wongwaracharti. The Bt30 entry fee will not generate enough money

to turn a profit, or even cover the parks maintenanceexpenses, which Sanit estimates will be in the millionsof Baht.

Were not thinking about making money. We justwant to give something back, he says. We hope topromote Thailand as a hub of extreme sports, bring-ing international recognition to the country.n

    Nu-metal kingpins Korn are

ready to bring their uniqueand widely loved brand of hardrocking unhappiness toBangkok as part of their Asian

    tour.After a year that saw rap-metal stan-

dard-bearers (and Korn tour mates LimpBizkit) cancel a show here, its refreshingto know that Korn, a band that has builtits reputation on having a hard-drivingtouring schedule and a hardcore, devil-may-care sense of rebellion has thecourage and dedication to its fans to trav-el across the world to play Saturdays con-cert at Impact Arena.

And by all accounts, Korns appearancehere should meet expectations evenamong the most discriminating fans.

The band will be delivering its fullshow here, the same seen throughout therest of the tour. Everyone leaves the showhaving truly experienced the power ofKorn live, says BEC Tero EntertainmentsNeil Thompson. Well see [Korn singer]Jonathon play the bagpipes and theirfamous microphone stand in the shape of a

    woman.

Korn is jetting in for one night only aspart of a larger Asian tour that will takethem to Australia, Japan, Indonesia,Hong Kong and South Korea. The band

will be making no other appearances inthe city, so fans have just one chance tosee them in action.

The band has released six albums inThailand on Sony Music Bec Tero, all sur-passing gold record status. Issues, released in 1998, reached platinum statusand their latest release, Take a Look inthe Mirror, is nearing gold status. The

band will be playing material from alltheir albums, including Korn favourites

Freak on a Leash, Blind, Got the Lifeand Adidas.

You dont have to consult the bandsimpressive sales figures to know thatKorn has a huge following in Thailand.Readier proof is in the ubiquitous Korn T-shirts worn by teenagers across the coun-try and the enthusiastic response whenev-er one of the bands songs is played on theradio or in bars and nightclubs.

We had been in discussions with Kornfor the past two years. Every time that wethought we had secured the act, some-thing always came up that postponed thetour, such as better offers in the US and

Latin America, says Thompson, whosecompany is investing Bt20 million to

    bring Korn to Bangkok.

Korn formed in 1993 in California, instantly developing a fan base thanks

to its intense stage show and a rigoroustouring that had them playing with someof the hottest acts of the day, includingHouse of Pain, Biohazard, 311, MarilynManson and heavy metal godfather OzzyOsbourne. The band recorded its self-titled debut album for EastWest Recordsin 1994 and went on to release its first sin-gle, Blind, achieving almost instant suc-

cess when the song went into heavy rota-tion on MTV. Cementing its popularity

with a string of hard-rocking releases, thegroups Family Values tour did for Numetal what Lollaplooza did for alternativerock and the Warped Tour did for punkrock. Family Values was one of the mostfinancially successful musical acts of the1990s.

But what is it that so moves fansaround the world? Korn is a band thatcommunicates in screams and whispers.Their music moves between angry bom-

bast and moments that feel introspective, creating a unique and at times almost

schizophrenic sound that many havetried to imitate, though with nowherenear the success or i ntensity.

    The instrumentation is relentless,

sometimes heavy, sometimes groovy, sometimes dropping into powerfulsilences that communicate of the solitudeof the bands angry, wounded universe.

Korns reputation as a band that givesits all whether when writing music orperforming live is an almost pure exam-ple of rock n rolls ability to strike a bal-ance between commercial success andrebellion.

Though the band plays heavy, loudrock music, its anger is strangely person-

al and emotional and therefore a littlemore inclusive than the political or reli-gious agendas of some of Korns musicalpredecessors.

Its this specially crafted kind of rock nroll catharsis which the bands faithfuls inThailand have come to expect. Korns rep-utation is almost a guarantee they wont

be let down when the lights comeup.

Korn performs at Impact Arena, MuangThong Thani at 8.30pm tomorrow. Ticketsare priced from Bt500 to Bt1,500 and areavailable from Thaiticketmaster.

    Stalking KornKorn comesto Bangkok

    ip-hop has gotten a bad rap.Many people have precon-ceived notions of hip-hop,

which is why mamma wontlet the kiddies listen to or

even watch the music videos shebelieves only pr omote drugs, sex andweapons.

Its true that hip-hops message wasburied by the popularity of gangsta

rap in the 1990s, but the musicalform first burst onto the scene with apositive vibe. And that side of hip-hop will rise again when the BlackEyed Peas perform on Monday atBEC Tero Hall at Suan Lum NightBazaar.

With the Black Eyed Peastheres no trace of violent WestCoast gangster rap. Although also

born on the streets of LosAngeles, the hip-hop of the peace-minded and positive-spirited Peasremind us what was hip-hop wasoriginally about.

Their music has earned therespect with their insightful lyricsthat look at what has gone

    wrong on the hip-hop/rapmusic scene:

I feel the weight of theworld on my shoulder/AsIm gettin older, yall, people gets colder/Most of us only care

about moneymakin/Selfishness gotus followin inthe wrong direc-tion.

The four Peas inthe pod consist of

William Adams (Will.I. Am), Jaime Gomez

(Taboo), Alan Pineda(Apl de Ap) and new

member Stacy Ferguson(Fergie), formerly of the

Mariah Carey look-a-liketrio Wild Orchid. After high school, when

Will.I.Am and Apl De Ap were

part of a breakdancing crew known asTribal Nation, they started concentrat-ing on hip-hop music and split off ontheir own as Atban Klann, an acronymfor A Tribe Beyond A Nation.

Falling out with their original label,Ruthless Records, Will and Aplrecruited another dancer/MC, Taboo,

and reappeared as the Black EyedPeas. The trio quickly gained notice onthe LA music scene. Their third albumElephunk welcomed a new memberinto BEP, Fergie.

Since then theyve been heardround the world belting out their pleasfor peace and understanding. Theirsmash hit Where is the Love, wasnominated for a Grammy Record ofthe Year award. Their cur-rent album

Elephunk has sold over 2 millioncopies and includes the hits Shut Up,Hey Mama, Hands Up and LetsGet Retarded.

The band first came to the attentionof BEC-Tero last year, when the

group Extreme Moto X Riders spreadthe word of this great new band gain-ing popularity in the US and the UK.

When BEC Tero saw the Peas performin Singapore, they spoke to them abouta full Asian tour, and now the Peas will

be hitting Bangkok, Singapore,Malaysia and Manila.

Since the Peas are the first hip-hopact to visit Thailand, BEC-Tero is con-fident they will be well received. Hip-hop is the fastest growing music in

Asia, with local acts like Thaitaniumand Joey Boy selling between 50,000to a million discs.

With hip-hop clubs popping up all

over the City of Angels and the influ-ence of R&B all over the airwavesand the silver screen, its no won-der why hip-hop records are sell-ing like hotcakes.

The market will continue togrow as long as it is not hardcore like gangster rap, saysNeil Thompson, deputy man-aging director of BEC Tero. Thecharts certainly seem to agree

with him.Joining the Peas as their open-

ing act is local hip-hop leaderJoey Boy. Joey Boy met the bandin Los Angeles and they co-pro-duced and performed one of JoeyBoys songs, LA to BKK,released here as an under-ground single. Given his rela-tionship with the band and hislocal popularity, BEC Terothought it was perfect to haveJoey Boy as the opening act.

In fact, we thought it would beimpolite not to invite him to jointhe event, says Thompson.

The Black-Eyed Peas are knowfor their high-energy perfor-mances. Shows are focusedon their music and not onspecial effects. However,

audiences can look for-ward to a great lightshow and super soundsystem.

The concert itselfwill be a minimum

of 75 minutes, plus encores. Thebetter the crowdresponse, the longerthe band will play sokeep them onstage byshouting your littlehearts out. n
