Brackendale Elementary Communicator Oct 11 2019 Volume 2 Dear Brackendale Families, A key component of our school culture is learning and practicing the 5 Growth Mindsets: Empathy, Flex- ibility, Persistence, Resilience, and Optimism. These strategies help children become life-long learn- ers and to stay the course when things get tough. I encourage you to take opportunities to recognize when you, your children, or people in your lives are using these skills. Another way to understand Growth Mindsets is to embrace the “Power of Yet”. When we add the word “yet” to our reflections, we teach ourselves that we believe in growth. For example: “ I am not able to do this, yet.” “My design is not working, yet.” “We haven’t figure out how to do this, yet.” Other statements that promote a growth mindset in- clude: “My mistakes help me learn and grow.” “I can take on a challenge.” “When we struggle, we get stronger.” “I will give it try.” Mrs. Fanzega’s students recently shared their thinking about their own growth mindsets. Dear Brackendale Families,

A key component of our school culture is learning

Choosing a Climate Action Organization

Our class was talking about Greta Thunberg, the Swedish student who first went on a

“School strike for climate”. Other students joined her and a movement began across the

world. Greta spoke at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2018. Instead of

taking a plane she sailed across the Atlantic to address the United Nations Climate Action

Summit in New York in September. She gave up air travel because it puts exhaust (gases

that contribute to climate change) in the air.

We believe her actions are great because she is helping to save the earth and teaching peo-

ple about climate action. She is very passionate about climate action.

We were trying to figure out a way that our class could contribute to stop climate

change. Our teacher informed us about the Climate Action Rallies and Protests that were

happening around the world and we decided to join the protesting. But, we didn’t stop

there. We also wanted to raise money for an organization that is helping the planet. Here

is the criteria that we used to select the organization that would receive the profits from

our bake sale.

Helping to stop climate change

Educating students

Can see they are taking action and making a difference

We had four organizations that we were consid-

ering; STAND EARTH, Squamish CAN, Squamish

Environmental Society, and the Squamish Water-

shed Society. We analyzed each of these organi-

zations against the criteria and then the whole

class choose the Squamish Watershed Society as

the best one. Our bake sale raised $302.98.

Library News

BRE’s first book fair for this school year was a bit hit! The fundraiser made a record sales reaching $7029.34. That means our library received over $700 of new books from the fair and about $1600 in cash after calculating our profit share from the total for future library resources for your children. A big thank you goes out to our parent volunteers and book fair coordinators, Heather Teasell and Kelsey Roberge. Without parent volunteers, we would not be able to make this fair run as smoothly as it did! One more thank you goes out to those generous students, parents, families and friends that gifted our BRE teachers with books after looking at their Scholastic Book Fair Wish Lists. Our teachers appreciated the gen-erous donations and will be able to use these literacy re-sources in their classrooms with your children.”

Emergency Preparedness

Emergency drills are a key component of our

emergency preparedness protocols. Yearly drills

are scheduled at the beginning of the year and

dates are adhered to as much as possible. Teach-

ers instruct students on the procedures to follow

and prepare students in advance to alleviate feel-

ings of concern.

We hold earthquake drills, evacuation drills (fire

drills), lockdown drills, and wildlife drills.

Getting the School Year Off to a Good Start

Set a firm, reasonable bed time. Kids need plenty of rest, especially as they readjust to the school-year schedule. Turn off electronics before starting bedtime routines to give the brain time to unplug.

Take time for a healthful breakfast each day. Children who eat well before school have the energy to take full advantage of important morning instruction.

Find a place for everything, and put everything in its place. The beginning of the year is the time to set routines that will avoid lost backpacks and materials. Encourage your child to check the school lost and found regularly too!

PAC Meeting

Please join the BRE PAC on Wednesday, Oct. 16th at 7:00pm in the school library. Every parent and guardian is a member of the PAC. Free childcare will be provided. Look for the latest minutes on the school website and the PAC board.
