A Newsletter Celebrating the Colorful Brady Street Neighborhood October 2015 Vol 21 Issue 9 Hello Association Members, Well it’s October, our truly fall month. Leaves are turning colors, then falling, football is glorious (Go Pack Go), pumpkins are ready to be picked and the squirrels are busily hiding their nuts everywhere including some very strange places which we often discover in the spring. As a baseball town we’re also aware the World Series competitors are being decided, and maybe next year our Brewer’s will be in the running. This year Halloween falls on Saturday and many communities have opted to celebrate it on the 31st for once. Because of that, please be cautious if you are out driving the streets Halloween afternoon and evening. The youngsters will be out early and the young at heart will be out late. Brady Street will be sponsoring a costume contest that evening. I’m sure there will be some very interesting sights to see on our street. And then.... On All Hollows Day, NOVEMBER 1ST, very early in the morning, around 7am to 9am the first Milwaukee Marathon is being run right down BRADY STREET from CAMBRIDGE to VAN BUREN ST. There will be NO PARKING on Brady Street during this event although they will be using rolling street closures to facilitate the runners passing through. Again, drive with caution if you are out during this time and be sure to move your cars off the street. You may have noticed that the vacant lot at Marshall and Brady Streets has been improved with plantings (photo page 3). The association had petitioned the City of Milwaukee through the Mayor’s Strong Neighborhoods Plan to improve the appearance of the lot. We were pleasantly surprised when it was transformed overnight. The whole neighborhood THANKS the City for acting on our request. It is such a great improvement for the street. It’s been suggested in celebration of our newly transformed lot at Marshall and Brady that around dusk (7pm) on Halloween the neighborhood should bring their already carved pumpkins and light them up as a fun display on the street. This would be a Flash Mob event, it either happens or it doesn’t. If you do decide to participate, please take your pumpkins back home afterwards. We also need to thank all the businesses who donated prizes for the PET PARADE; Brady St. Futons, Brewed, Bosley, Casablanca, Dragonfly, Eco Pet, Greenfields, Hi Hat, Hosed, Jack’s, La Masa, Pleasant Kafe, Polished, Regano’s Roman Coin, Rena’s Closet, Starbucks, The BID, and soon to be open Pepi’s Place. Congratulations to our contest winners. It’s always such a fun time and all the animals costumed or not seemed to enjoy taking Brady Street to the dogs for once. About $1,000 was raised for the Humane Society through this event. Thanks to all for their generousity. Happy Halloween! Teresa Morton, Pres. BSAA ADVERTISE WITH US! Monthly BSAA Meeting Report - OctoberThe BSAA had it’s monthly meeting of the Board of Directors and members on Tuesday, October 6 at the Brady Street BID office located at 1224 E. Brady Street.

The meeting included two presentations, the first from Amber and Ricci Mane owners of Pepi’s Place (photo top left) and the second from Zach Eberhardt of Dominion Properties with Elias Chedid (photo top right) owner/operator of Harry’s restaurant in Shorewood and the Knick, regarding requests for business related developments.

The Mane’s requested support from the BSAA for a beer and wine liquor license for Pepi’s Place (formerly Berry Me and Philly Way). They informed the board that their concept is focused on serving food, including breakfast every day, and that beer and wine would only be served at the table. The restaurant would not have any bar seating.

Eberhardt spoke about Dominion’s pending purchase of the building at 1234 E. Brady St. (former Brady Street Hardware store location) and their interest to lease the space to a restaurant operator. He introduced Elias Chedid as a potential operator for the restaurant. Chided said that he is in talks with Dominion to lease the space and would like to open a restaurant similar to Harry’s Bar and Grill. The concept would be an American cuisine restaurant with a small bar for additional seating.

The board questioned Eberhart about their attempts to attract a retailer to lease the space. He said that they had reached out to several potential retailers but no one expressed interest in the space. Additionally, he mentioned that the challenge for leasing the space to a retailer is the significant difference in the potential rent that can be charged to a retailer compared to a restaurant or tavern. Dominion has not closed its purchase of the building, extending the deadline while decisions on the use of the first floor space are settled. The board did not take an official position on Dominion’s proposal at the meeting.

Also discussed at the meeting was a plan to hold a joint public meeting of the BSAA, the Brady Street BID and the Brady Street Foundation for Arts and Education to discuss the organizations’ focus on serving the neighborhood. The meeting is proposed to take place on October 27 with a location to be determined. Watch our facebook page, twitter and website for updates.

All BSAA members are welcome to attend monthly meetings which are typically held on the 1st Tuesday every month at 6:30pm at the Brady Street BID office, unless otherwise noted.

- Christopher L. Johnson, Secretary BSAA

handmade paper, hanji, a material known to survive for over one thousand years.

Korean works in the exhibition include funerary garments designed by Yang Bae Jeon, intricately carved hanji sewing boxes and objects by master artisan, Haemija Kim, and prints of Buddhist sculptures and architectural elements created in the takbon technique of ink-impression making by Kumgang Seunim. Paper from several of South Korea’s remaining hanji mills will also be on display throughout the exhibition. Recently created installations, textiles, sculpture, and prints with hanji as the primary medium comprise the work of Milwaukee based artists, Marna Brauner, Christiane Grauert, Jessica Meuninck-Ganger, Nirmal Raja, and Rina Yoon for this exhibition. Each featured artist draws upon traditional techniques learned in Korea to inform their work for the Villa Terrace.

City news

Fall Leaf Collection Oct. 1 - Nov. 25City of Milwaukee residents may rake leaves into the street from October 1 through November 15 for pickup by Department of Public Works Sanitation crews. After November 15, leaves can be taken to one of the City's Self-Help Centers. City crews will wrap up leaf collection efforts on November 25.

Residents are asked to rake their leaves into the curb lanes for collection. After November 15, sanitation crews will still pick up remaining leaf piles as long as weather permits through November 25. If you still have leaves not yet raked into the road, you must bag them and take them to a Self-Help Center for disposal (6660 N. Industrial Road or 3879 W. Lincoln Avenue).

For more information, call (414) 286-CITY (2489). You can always make other special pickup requests online, at any time of day, using City’s online service request at milwaukee.gov/clickforservice.

Sanitation Services offers these tips for successful leaf collections:

• Do not put leaves in plastic bags - empty them into the curb lane. Leaves are composted but plastic bags do not decompose

• Put Halloween pumpkins in your garbage cart or on a compost pile, not on leaf piles in the street

• Please keep debris, such as flowers and vegetable plants, on top of your leaf piles at the curb

• Do not put brush in the leaf piles. Call (414) 286-CITY (2489) for a special brush pickup or fill out an online service request. Brush can also be taken to one of the City's Self-Help Centers.

• Keep piles away from sewer grates• Keep debris away from storm drains in the street• Large amounts of branches should be piled away from overhanging trees

Off-Season Leaf RemovalIn the off season leaves may be taken to a Self-Help Center location. Please refer to our Self-Help Centers for locations and hours of operations. Brush can also be taken to one of the City's Self-Help Centers.

Recycle Leaves and GrassShred leaves with your lawnmower and leave them on the grass or compost them. Grass clippings left on the lawn will nourish the soil, too.

Nominate 2015 City/County Christmas TreeThe City of Milwaukee’s Department of Public Works is now accepting nominations for a tree to serve as the 2015 City/County Christmas tree to be displayed in Red Arrow Park in downtown Milwaukee. Residents who wish to have their tree considered should contact the City of Milwaukee at 286- CITY (2489) by Monday, October 19.

City of Milwaukee Trick-or-TreatOfficial Trick-or-Treat hours in the City of Milwaukee will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 1-4 pm.

Tips from the Milwaukee Police Department Safety Division to help make Halloween safe and more enjoyable for everyone:Residents are reminded to keep children safe during Trick-or-Treating. Children wait for this day all year long, as do some adults. They spend weeks deciding on just the right costumes,

dreaming of bags of goodies and parties. While Halloween is a cherished tradition, the excitement of the event can cause children and parents to forget to be safe while trick or treating or attending parties. Both children and adults need to think about safety on this annual day of make-believe.

Before children start out, parents should make sure that:• When designing costumes, keep safety in mind to ensure that the children have

a fun-filled and safety-filled Halloween.• Costumes are loose enough so that warm clothes can be worn underneath to

allow freedom of movement in the event of cold weather.• Costumes are not too long that they are a tripping hazard, when walking or

climbing steps to the front door to get their treats.• Consider using makeup instead of a mask so that a child’s vision will not be

blocked when walking on the sidewalk or crossing the street.• For kids under the age of 12, attach their name, address and telephone number

(including the area code) to their clothes, but not in an easily visible place.• Children travel only in familiar areas, along a prearranged route, and instructed

to never enter a stranger’s home.• A return time has been established.• Explain to youngsters not to eat any treats until you have inspected it. A meal or

a snack beforehand will help deter them from digging into their candy.

The Milwaukee Police Department Safety Division urges motorists to be especially alert on Halloween and offers the following driving tips:

• Slow down in residential neighborhoods and obey all traffic signs and signals. Side street speed limits are 25 MPH.

• Watch for children who may dart out into the street at any time, especially from between parked cars.

• Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully. Stop before the sidewalk before exiting the alley.

• If you are driving children around, be sure they exit on the curb side, away from traffic. (And of course, make sure everyone’s safety belt is fastened, including the driver.)

• Adults, if you are on the way to a costume party, do not wear your mask while driving and avoid costumes that make it difficult to move your arms or legs.

• If you are planning on drinking, have a designated driver so that you can arrive home safe.
