From the security desk… Howdy folks! I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. As we move past Thanksgiving on the way to the Christmas holiday season we need to be cognizant of keeping our home secure from those with ill intentions. Here is a list of things to think about as we approach the holidays. Burglars look for an easy entry with good escape routes.

Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the front window so it’s easily visible from the street. It’s too tempting for them to smash the window and grab the wrapped packages.

Burglars look for occupancy cues like outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up newspapers, or advertising flyers hanging on the door knob. Use an inexpensive light timer when you are away or ask a neighbor to keep the front of your home clean of papers and debris. Motion detector lights at the front and back are good options.

Burglars know to look for the hidden door keys near the front entrance. Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to a trusted neighbor.

Burglars prefer to enter through unlocked doors or windows. Sliding windows that are not secure can be seen from distance. One holiday problem can occur when exterior Christmas light extension cords are run inside through a window and prevent it from being secured. Hire an electrician or handyman to install an inexpensive exterior outlet for your holiday lights.

Don’t post your family name on your mailbox or on you house. A burglar can call directory assistance to get your telephone number and call your home while in front of your house to confirm that you are away.

Don’t leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like, “You’ve reached the Wilson’s…we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays…please leave a message.” Burglars love to hear that they have plenty of time to break in and completely ransack your home.

After Christmas day, don’t pile up empty gift boxes from your new computer, DVD player, or stereo receiver on the street for the garbage man. Burglars appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. Break them down or cut them up to conceal the items better. After a lucrative burglary, the chances of being burglarized again are increased to steal the new replacement products.

Fortify your home by installing solid core doors, heavy duty locks, longer screws in the lock strike plates and door hinges, and install secondary security devices on all accessible sliding windows.

Hire a landscape service to maintain the yard while you are gone. This looks like someone is home. I hope this list is helpful, and we don’t see many police reports coming from our neighborhood. Be observant, vigilant and neighborly. Submitted by: Joseph Schill

The Origins of Rudolph Holiday Past In 1939, an advertising employee at the department store Montgomery Ward wrote the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for a store promotion. Since then it has sold over 80 million copies. Rudolph has definitely gone down in our holiday history!

Landscaping Chairperson—Carol Guthrie Y O M 3204 B C December’s Bryan Place Neighborhood Association yard of the month is at 3204 Basil Court. Gloria and Richard Whitehead’s home is on the corner of Basil Court and Marseille Place, so their yard adds elegance and charm to both streets. Their use of Asian Jasmin paired with a low red brick wall that wraps around from the front of the house to the sunroom on the Marseille side makes the corner lush. And in the summer you can see Richard doing a lot of hand watering. Right now the corner is accented with a pot of bright green po-tato plants. And come by at night to see how beautifully lighted the trees are in the front yard. You might even see Gloria and Richard sitting on the front porch. But what makes the Whitehead’s yard really special is that they have a mysterious and mischievous pixie that adds a variety of seasonal accessories to their yard. It is fun to see what’s next! BPNA Board Meeting! The Bryan Place Neighborhood Association board will meet on Jan 8 at 7pm in the pool club house located on 3030 Adolph Street. Remember, anyone can attend these monthly meetings, and we encourage your participa-tion. Next month’s meeting will be held on Feb 5 at the same location. Be sure to put it on your calendar.

President’s Message As this year comes to a close, so does my tenure as your president. One of the many things I have enjoyed about serving BPNA is the great pleasure of getting to know so many of you better. Many wonderful, giving and thoughtful people live here in Bryan Place. You, the residents, have made the last three years very good ones. Also, I’ve had the great good fortune to have worked with very dedicated and reliable Board Members. They are responsible for all of our accomplishments. I want to give special recognition to Gary. Under his editorship, the newsletter has become an outstanding publication. In addition to that, he has supported and supplemented my work as president and served as temporary membership chair for the past year. From both of us, it has been our great honor to have served you. Best Wishes, Linda and Gary Collins

BPSPA Installs Security Cameras After several instances of vandalism and theft at and around the Bryan Place Pool, the board elected to install security cameras this month covering both the pool and clubhouse. The board hopes this step helps to curb crime at and around the pool and helps to ensure the safety of the pool members and residents of Bryan Place. Neighbors noticing any suspicious behavior in or around the pool are asked to call 911. If you have any questions or concerns for the pool board, they can be reached via email at [email protected]. The Trammell Crow Center skyscraper in downtown Dallas is undergoing its first major renovation in 32 years. Improvements of the 50-story office tower involve a complete makeover of the lobby, entrance and ground floor of the iconic building. Additionally, JPMorgan and Stream Realty Partners have invested in a new mixed-used tower across the street from the Crow Center, and construction has begun on a new high-rise that will house retail space, a parking garage and a 200-room hotel in the first phase. A 400-unit residential tower is planned for future construction.

Goldman Sachs is renting 170,000 square feet of office space in the Trammell Crow Center. The firm will move more than 1,000 workers from Las Colinas to the tower in early 2018. The relocation will be one of the largest recent office moves to downtown from the suburbs. The more than $135 million Trammell Crow Center redevelopment is one of the most extensive renovations of any of the 1980’s towers downtown. Work on the project has begun and is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2018. Upon its completion, project will remarkably transform Ross Avenue and will contribute to a very vibrant mixed-use destination within the heart of downtown Dallas.

The project will offer 34,000-square feet of new retail and restaurant space to the 2-block site, near south of Klyde Warren Park. The skyscraper will get a new glass atrium entrance on Ross and the two lower floors of the building will be largely rebuilt. The Ross Avenue side of the building will also be enlarged with two new retail wings that will extend toward the street. This is an outstanding project and has taken a couple of years of planning and preparation to ensure a successful development, with numerous designers and architects involved during initial phase. Architect HOK designed the renovation of the Trammell Crow Center and Dallas' HKS is the architect for the new building across the street, which will add more than 2,000 parking spaces.

Turner Construction and Austin Commercial are the general contractors and have started the renovation on the existing tower as well as foundation work for the tower across the street. This expansion of Trammell Crow Center is important to overall downtown transformation. Older properties’ vigilant renovations not only add tremendous interest to the business characteristic of the district, but additionally such sensible planning and approach will reinforce the engines of current urban gentrification and beatification with exceptional boosts that elevate our city faster and higher.
